Unless you count Gypsy as a Sondheim (some do some don't) they haven't actually done a Sondheim since 2011 so I'd argue it's time to do another... Didn't they do Assassins last year? Yes but no Sondheim since then  |

Ther may not have been a Sondheim done at CFT but his works seem to pop up like mushrooms everywhere else. Still, it save me money & travel hassle if CFT programmes productions which are an instant no-no for me & SS certainly appears popular with others. It's not that I haven't seen any; on the contrary, I have and sufficient to last me indefinitely. If only CFT - or another venue with a suitable budget & space - would revive Poppy, but I do recognise that it's problematic, though surely no more so than other shows which have been revived. It's decades now since it has been seen. |

Bye Bye Birdie, Do Re Mi, SeeSaw, Ballroom, State Fair to even modern shows like Aida, Scarlet Pimpernel, The Prom.

As TheatreFan62 says, Sweeney was a big hit at CFT but it was a shortish run at the end of the season. It wasn't the main summer musical, which was Singin' In The Rain IIRC. The main musical has got to be a well-known one to bring the coach parties in and the theatre financially afloat. CFT's production of Babes in Arms in 2007 played to something like 40 per cent capacity even though it was a Rodgers and Hart musical, but it wasn't a well-known one.
The lesser known musicals need either to be staged at the Minerva or for a short run in the main theatre either at the start of the end of the season, IMO.

Completely, or it needs to have a name that will sell e.g. Music Man. Less known here but Brian Conley helped pull them in. Also one of their best tbh. Also, what is a guaranteed sell is slowly changing as people age and generations change. The market that knew and loved the golden age is slowly dying out. Not saying upcoming generations won't know them, but there won't be as many and will probably know fewer of the shows (aside the big ones always on TV). That said I'd like them to do Me and My Girl again, properly this time 🤣 |

Definitely, although i think Kiss Me Kate has shown Charlie Stemp is a little overhyped. Jack Butterworth outshines him in KMK and I think shows we have more than one song and dance man here. |

Honestly if they could get Charlie Stemp to do Me and my Girl like they should have done in the first place it'd have been excellent. Me and My Girl is gagging for a revival, a decent revival I mean. I could see this being a star vehicle for James Corden, he would be great. Also when Nicholas Hytner announced he was doing Guys and Dolls at the Bridge, I also would of thought this would be a perfect hook up again with James Corden, I could see James being a brilliant Nathan Detroit also. |

I just hope Chichester go back doing two big musicals, like they did before. They've never done anything by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which would sell very well there. I could see Song and Dance doing well there.

They've only ever done two BIG musicals per year successfully with the involvement of the Dame Staunton - 2011 - Singin' in the Rain (summer) / Sweeney Todd (autumn) 2014 - Guys and Dolls (summer) / Gypsy (autumn). I'm not acknowledging newer musicals like Flowers for Mrs Harris or The Famous Five. I imagine it's pretty expensive to pull off and a slight risk to programme two musicals back to back when only one or sometimes neither are guaranteed crowd-pleasers... See: Assassins/The Sound of Music, A Damsel in Distress/Mack and Mabel, Out of this World/Just So. |

Chichester also have done smaller musicals in the Minerva such as Travels with my Aunt, The Pajama Game, Local Hero etc. I like Chichester to do two musicals a year again, I think they could also do a third and do a big xmas musical or play, I never understood why they don't do a Winter show? James Corden in Me and My Girl would be Matt Lucas all over again. I saw Funny Girl at the Minerva years ago, and She Loves Me. People were predicting James Corden's demise in The Constituent, hower he got good reviews. Hi is a good actor. |
