So will this start late and continue into September/October or will the show start in September instead?

Oh I hope it still happens - I wonder if they’d kept their diaries free with a view of it extending?

I really hope that rumour is true.
I've also pretty much resigned myself to the fact that this isn't happening, and I've been so looking forward to it.

Yes I too was so looking forward to it. Guess it will be a complicated situation if it is rescheduled as to how to deal with those already booked.

I was talking to someone the other day who had booked this and had no idea at all that it was a musical until I told her. She had purely booked it because of Jake. She is not a lover of musicals and I thought good luck with that as it's not one of Sondheims easiest.
Indeed. Casual theatre goers will just book for the star turn, in many cases.
And yeah, good luck to her. I saw the show in the 2000s, and hated it at the time (although I do like to listen to some of the songs)

Absolutely gutted but just been resigning myself to the fact this show probably won’t happen. :-(

I need this to happen so I have something to look forward to when this all ends. However, looking at the original tweet, this was supposed to start in May so I do fear that anything beyond September will be a real gift from God. Right now, I can just imagine it being a 6 week run from mid-July and maybe an extra week extension in September if we're lucky.

I was also really looking forward to this, I love the show and had heard great things about this version, and whilst I hope it arrives sometime I think the idea of 'as planned' seems almost an impossibility.
In terms of finance it was originally supposed to run from June 5 to September 5 and I know that it was budgeted for a 13 week run without the option of any extension (largely around JG's availability). In spite of some fairly astronomical ticket prices it was also quite tightly capitalised - so anything less than say a 10/11 week run would mean that it's probably not financially viable - and that's not even taking into account bookings being cancelled, a likely downturn in overall ticket buying and a general tourist deficit. So I'd imagine they are doing some very careful remodelling at the moment, when considering options.
It was due to go into rehearsal in late April/early May, and my understanding is that there was still some considerable amount of casting to be finalised. So if, by any stretch of the imagination, we were to get toward a business as usual model by May then the production would already be way behind schedule, which coupled with the financial issues means unless the dates can be shifted then its unlikely to go ahead as originally planned.
I guess the one upside is that the other projects which JG is involved in are also likely to be up in the air, so the chances of being able to reschedule are probably actually greater than they would be under normal circumstances.

I fully understand the love for this in our community on here.
But it really hadn't sold that well having a quick look at the seating plans. I think the bonkers pricing really didn't help.
If as said above the budgeting was already tight, makes me sad to say I can't see this happening at all in the immediate post Covid period - I just don't think it's what Joe will want. And certainly not at those prices....

If anyone wants to check out Gyllenhaal and Ashford singing Move On they did so in the Sondheim 90th birthday concert on YouTube. I'd recommend watching the whole thing as well as there were some brilliant performances from some very talented people (I was very partial to The Miller's Son and I Remember and No More got me tearing up if you're looking for some highlights).

I second The Miller's Son and No More as highlights from a show that was generally an embarrassment of riches.

Why is ATG still selling (or trying to sell) tickets for this when the first preview is a month away. I'm as keen as anyone for this to go ahead but seems very odd.

Because ATG - how can I put this nicely? - might be evil.

Presumably because the producers haven't cancelled or postponed it yet and so ATG would be in breach of contract if they didn't leave tickets on sale. I dislike ATG as much as the next person, but I don't think they are to blame here.
