Hey hey! Visiting London from Chicago, IL and I've already booked Guys and Dolls, Stranger Things, and Standing at the Sky's Edge. Seeing a concert on Thursday night, but have the day open. Do you all have any suggestions of shows you'd suggest for a Thursday matinee? Thanks! Any must sees? Or maybe stuff that is off-West End or cool experiences.

If you mean the upcoming Thursday, I'd suggest Pacific Overtures or The Motive and the Cue.

Definitely The Motive and the Cue. I saw this last week and it's one of the best plays I have seen in years. Outstanding performances. You don't want to miss it.

I'll third The Motive and the Cue. Absolutely superb play. Brilliant.

Fourthing Motive. It feels very British, and a chance to see something from the National, without going to the National.
Do you like whodunnits? Both the Mousetrap (bit of theatre history) and Witness for the Prosecution have a matinee that day.

Love a whodunnits! I think I'll do Witness that day. Maybe Mousetrap Wednesday night, as I have that free too and since it's essentially historical at this point. Motive and the Cue doesn't seem like something I'd be interested in, but maybe I'd like it?

I have seen The Mousetrap, Witness and Motive. I would recommend Motive & Cue very highly. If you will be returning to London, Mousetrap will likely still be running and potentially Witness as well. They are all 3 enjoyable shows but Motive is special and not likely you will have a chance to see it in the future.

Based on the other stuff you’re seeing, Motive might not be the best pick for you (even though it’s brilliant, I do think it needs a knowledge of Hamlet/Burton/Gielgud to really, really love it. ) Has Hadestown come to Chicago yet? That might work, just opened. Something contemporary, upbeat, slightly rock-ier edge?

Just for one day (live aid musical) has a Thursday matinee at the old vic This might be a really good suggestion. It’s never going to make it to Chicago. (That sounds really snide. It’s not meant to. I think enjoyment of this might depend on your demographic.)

For context, I lived in NYC for years, so I've seen a ton of stuff. And the last time I was in London saw Angels in America at the National. So I'm not opposed to Motive and the Cue, just not sure if I find it all that interesting. Same with the Live Aid thing. Not sure that's my thing.

Some more info on you have enjoyed is the most reliable data for predicting what you’ll like, rather than where you have lived or what you have seen before. I suggested the Christie stuff as it’s quite ‘British’ and fits the Thursday matinee requirement. You mentioned a gig and Standing at the Sky’s Edge, hence the ‘Just for A Day’ wildcard 😹 ‘Stranger Things’ suggests an interest in modern pop culture but can’t find anything on Thursday lunchtime that feels related. There’s a bunch of poppier musicals like Six and Mean Girls, but the latter hasn’t opened yet. Do you like drag? We Need to Talk About Jamie is fun. Operation Mincemeat? Haven’t seen it, but it’s on my list. I think it might be a tough ticket though.

So, my flight over from Chicago got derailed (thanks Delta), so I missed my Wednesday shows. But I saw "Witness for the Prosecution" on Thursday - thanks for your help! I really enjoyed it and it's def. not something I'm likely to see anywhere else! I also saw "Stranger Things" - Never seen the show but I loved it from the giant production to the main actor. Awesome work. Saw "Guys and Dolls" and I liked the staging, but I still think it's kind of a yawn of a show. And I reconfigured some things so I can see "Standing on the Sky's Edge" on Tuesday before I fly out! Thanks for all your help!! I spent the weekend in Scotland or else I'd have seen more stuff.
