Not really my cup of tea, but I suppose with Meat's continuing bad back, this is the next best thing!! Anyway, I'm pleased for the Coliseum, and if people like this, we must hope it leads them to other things they wouldn't normally consider (as long as they behave). I think the fact that Meat Loaf can't actually sing anymore (have you heard his last album?) is more relevant than his bad back, but I wouldn't say the musical is "the next best thing". The songs belong to Steinman, and don't only exist in relation to Meat Loaf. The cast perform them as well as they have ever been performed. Good point, very well made. And no, I haven't, or his first, or any in-between. I have seen him on the TV plugging something, and he didn't look at all well. |

Original Sin (the album by Pandora's Box) is one of my favourite Steinman albums. Great songs and great singers. Celine's cover of "It's All Coming Back..." is excellent as well though. And yes, Meat Loaf did record the song too - its on Bat Out Of Hell III |

So I was at press night tonight, fun doing the red carpet!
Now this was the strangest musical (my companion said 'We Will Rock You' on drugs) I've seen in ages, I literally haven't got a clue what I just watched, the storyline made little sense & that goes with characters.
However the source music is just brilliant along with killer vocals from its talented cast with a great set & high production values. There were some great theatre magic moments and well I feel a bit in love with the Dad character (Paradise by the Dashlight) & it's great to see 'It's All Coming Back To Me Now' on stage.
Yes it entertained but not for its story (have to smile at reviews, one of those that crictics must be using the press pack to get a story).
It will have a successful season & can tour wordwhile, it's odd but will get fans & yes it's the music that is done well (not any story or character development).

As my spouse is going to be in London for a day or two, I looked into getting her a ticket for this - but, those prices! And, yet, there were not that many empty seats for the days I looked at! Unfortunately, she doesn't have the time to try for a day ticket or Today's Tix. So, she's seeing two other shows.

Sorry, but did anyone expect Abba to be in Mamma Mia or Carole King in Beautiful? Whats different here? To be honest though I think it's ok to point that out, especially to the DM readership. First time I saw it alone but after loving it and recommending that my theatrebuds come along for my second visit I had to say several times: It's not about meat loaf It's not his biography He isn't in it! To which one bright spark came back with "oh, what about Cher?" 😆 |

I mostly enjoyed this and would agree with The Stage; terrible choreography and dialogue aside this is still a great musical. I doubt anyone with an interest is really going for the vague story about growing up but never growing old. They just want to bounce in their seat to Bat Out of Hell and get a chance to hear this songs live from an album people have a lot of affection for. There are some great performers, Polec, Danielle Steers' fabulous talking and singing voice plus some great staging but it is just a nice frothy show
I think there were some nice arrangements, particularly of slower songs like Objects in the Rear View Mirror and It's All Coming Back to Me now and the 3 hours flies by. I feel this is what people want from West End musicals and it does make me question how long to ENO can go on in its opera guise when shows like this do so well.

I would be surprised if it doesn't end up with a post-ENO home but who knows how the climate is under the bonnet!
As a regular but uninformed theatre goer this has repeat custom written all over it. People who don't see anything else just regulars for this. I had a crazy friend who saw Sunny Afternoon hundreds of times because she loved The Kinks.

Subsidy. Personally, I found myself musing whether Bat would fit nicely into the Dominion, if it did a quick tour between August and December to let AIP finish... It's going to Toronto from October to December. I can't see ENO giving up the Coliseum unless they're forced to sell it, |
