Anyone else seen this? This was my first opera and I have mixed feelings. I thought the performances were fantastic but I am not sure I enjoyed a lot of the odd lyrics against the stunning music. The issue I have with the ENO is that it mixes the lavish with the basic and doesn't do it well. You have a stunning venue, perhaps more than half empty, and then a stunning stage with the minimal of set design. I suppose I was hoping for something intimate (even from the upper circle of G6) but it just felt very distant and cold. The Soviet Union setting felt more like a reason to justify the basics rather than an art
It is a good production but summed up all the woes of the ENO for me.

I haven't seen this revival but I saw the same production back in 2008 & wasn't very keen on it. It may just be me though, as I disliked Alden's Peter Grimes production the following year so much that I left in the interval & then it won an Olivier! I've seen 3 prodctions of Jenufa and by far my favourite was ETO's, which was the only one set in the 19th century.
