I mean, TikTok is huge nowadays. If a few videos from this go on to become massively popular, it's a great big self-perpetuating free advert for the show.

They’ll do the usual TV talent show thing, they’ll cast “John, a waiter from Scotland” in a role, but conveniently fail to mention that “John” has loads of West End credits, is a trained and working theatre professional and just finished doing 9 months understudying a lead role in “The Book of Mormon” or something. I remember watching one of the talent shows (Joseph, possibly?) where they did exactly this. I had seen the performer in previous years cover both Jean Valjean and The Phantom of the Opera in the West End. But no, “he’s a waiter”.
It’s a gimmick, with the platform being used to advertise the show and make it feel like “a community” production where “the powers that be are listening to the public”.
The tactic is as old as the hills.

They basically want people with a big TikTok following who will continually promote the show. There are plenty of established musical theatre actors with followings, so there's no reason why they will have to go with unknown people.

A person singing one song in their bedroom does not translate to being able give a fully rounded performance eight times a week. Usually self tapes are requested by casting directors from carefully selected candidates who have the training or experience to play the role.

I think a big part of the songwriting success of Pasek-Paul is their songs that are just disconnected enough that they can be played on the radio. Hence the amount of Greatest Showman, La La Land etc. airplay.
But the downside to that is DEH feels like a bunch of pop songs sandwiched in-between nothing book scenes. It feels like the Pasek-Paul jukebox musical.
Sort of like what danb said, maybe with a tour, stripped down without the excess... we'll get a less artifical response.

The only real moments of emotion for me are when Larry Murphy finally breaks down, & ‘Words Fail’; Actual demonstrations of emotion rather than endless talking/singing about it. If they can tap into the real, rather than needing volume & multi-tracking to create effective moments they’ll be onto a winner.

That is a graveyard slot for this film however bad it is. Has any other tony award winning and at time of opening highly acclaimed musical gone through such a tumultuous downturn of fortunes in less than a decade since it opened. Will be interesting if the new tour can restore its reputation a bit and sort out the main character issues which both brought it acclaim and caused the backlash.

I definitely agree with you; sarcasm doesn't come across in text much 🤣🤣 Sorry, I noticed the sarcasm in the first paragraph, but thought you were being serious in the second! I saw DEH with the original cast on Broadway. At that time, it was one of the hottest tickets in town (outside of ‘Hello, Dolly!’ with Bette Midler). I came out of the theatre thinking that it was ‘enjoyable’, but couldn’t understand the massive hype that was surrounding it. I wouldn’t necessarily want to see it again and I can’t get past the first half of the film version at all!

Don't even get me started on the film. If I were to watch it again, it would be in small theatre like Nottingham with a new creatives.

I'd revise the book a bunch in a new production, but unfortunately the success of the musical with teens on stage mean the book is likely to not be changing anytime soon.

has anyone had any rumblings on who might be in this? Given the age of most of the characters and they held an open call I would guess there is a high chance there might be a few straight out of drama school making their pro debuts and so therefore unknown.
