Sadly Matthew has passed away apparently accidentally drowning in his jaccuzi aged only 54. He was a supremely talented actor and helped make Friends the legendary show it was as Chandler Bing. His 25 years or so battle with drink and drugs were well known and it was all the more tragic that his painkiller problem was due to a jet ski accident. Also he had been sober for two and a half years.
His film career never took off as many hoped it would. I did think he was good in The Whole Nine Yards though. He did a lot of other TV work either side of Friends and did a couple of West End plays too. I was at the National Theatre to see a play in 2003 and having a walk around beforehand and a big people carrier pulled up and Matthew got out. He was popping in to visit someone before he was going on to his show at the then Comedy Theatre I think. He happily did selfies and signed a few autographs as he was instantly recognised by all the people about, he seemed a really nice down to earth chap.
But lets all remember the joy and laughter that he gave us as Chandler. My favourite scene of his was when he went to Joey's tailor and described a rather intimate way he was "cupped". One of my top Friends moments ever.

Matthew Perry's work with Aaron Sorkin in Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip was superb - if you get the chance please check it out (there used to be full episodes on YouTube). He was in a couple of episodes of The West Wing, too, gave a great performance. In Friends, and in these, his delivery timing is everything.

Absolutely shocking news to wake up to this morning; Friends has been a mainstay throughout my life, and as a socially awkward teenager who loved humour I identified so much with Chandler. Perry himself is one of the very best to ever do it, his comedic timing was unparalleled and his characterisation iconic. It was always so sad to read about all the issues he had throughout his life, and I hope he's at peace and free from pain now. www.avclub.com/r-i-p-matthew-perry-friends-star-1850970396

Yes I don't think it has really sunk in for a lor of us yet. Our thoughts have to be with his parents, the rest of his family and his associates and friends.
He had apparently been playing pickleball which is a version of racket sports for a couple of hours yesterday and had gone into his pool to relax afterwards. He had been sober for a few years, was keeping himself fit so its not like his passing was directly linked to his addiction battles which he seemed to have finally won.

I was very sad to wake up to this news. Chandler and Joey were my favourite characters in friends. He was such a troubled soul.

It's incredibly sad, but not unexpected either. Even being clean for a few years, all the years of addiction and the numerous health scares he endured must have taken their toll on his body. The final chapters of his autobiography seemed to recognise that he might be living on borrowed time. Some memorable roles and an iconic comic character that defined an era is quite a legacy, along with the help he provided to others dealing with addiction.

Yes he had other heath issues too and those all add up. Plus he was a long time smoker which wouldn't help him healthwise. I hadn't heard he'd mentioned possibly being on "borrowed time" so thanks to Karloscar for pointing it out. There are some people who lived chaotic and hedonistic lifestyles or have mental health issues and seem quite "fragile" who if they do sadly pass you we aren't surprised. But I wouldn't have had Matthew in that group.

It wasn't as explicit as saying he was on borrowed time, but summing up his achievements and what he hoped to be remembered for hinted that he wasn't really looking to the future with great optimism.

Poor Matt. RIP.
Particularly shocking to think about all time times he was mocked in the press and on SM for his struggles with the addictions destroying his health.
And to see, now, the ghouls out in force blaming his heart attack on having the Covid jab (as if years of smoking, opiates, cocaine, and alcohol are not much likelier culprits for his heart being under strain).

So if he already had a dodgy heart from the drugs and the smoking (combining alcohol and cocaine is known to be disastrous for heart-health), had just been exerting himself, and then was further dehydrated in the heat of the tub, that likely contributed to his heart attack. Sadly when that sort of thing happens when you are alone and in water there’s almost no chance of survival.

If I recall correctly he said something akin to "Joey, your tailor is a very bad man!" to which shocked, awed and confused Joey replied " I thought that's what tailors always do!"

Really sad to hear Matthew is gone. He always seemed to be struggling one way or another, but so damn charming and funny. I have no idea whether he had won his battle against his addictions, but he tried, and he seemed to be doing well. I'm sorry he didn't get to have some good long years of peace.

Writer Joe Keenan's memory of working with Perry on a script for the revival of The Odd Couple was quite moving. When they struggled to come up with new ideas, Keenan suggested that taking a solitary walk was a good way to clear the mind, to which Matthew replied "there's no way I could ever do that." Sad.

What is not as widely known is that during the early days of Covid , Matthew headed up a limited release clothing collection playing on his Chandler catchphrases with proceeds going to the W.H.O Covid vaccination project. (I'm currently wearing my 'Could I be any more vaccinated?' tee shirt)
Subsequently, when the much delayed Friends reunion finally happened, they used the same platform for merchandising with proceeds going to various charities.
