Anyone know what’s going on with The Theatre Cafe ?
Apparently closed today and rumours of eviction.
One of my favourite places to visit when in London

Found this on twitter, supposedly the eviction notice that was put up on the doors. I haven't been since it was still on Shaftesbury Avenue, but I always thought it was a nice little place

Gutted. It was so cosy and would prefer going there than the cramped Cafe Nero across the way.

If their commemoration doesn't involve a rousing rendition of 'Rent' I'll be very disappointed.

Please tell me they aren't organising a memorial service for a cafe that didn't pay its rent

"a safe space"?
Going to theatre is not inherently dangerous.
I wonder if the few remaining discount ticket outlets owned by the same business are likely to go the same way.

I wish there was a safe space from other theatregoers.

So have both of the venues closed?

Not that I've ever been in it, as I never go into cafes in London. Moved to a bigger unit on St Martin's Lane a few years ago, then the pandemic hit and that's arguably when their financial troubles began.

"a safe space"? Going to theatre is not inherently dangerous. I wonder if the few remaining discount ticket outlets owned by the same business are likely to go the same way. I will argue that for solo female theatre-goers it can be (mainly leaving theatres at night) - but I think the ‘safe space’ here more means a reliable place to go inbetween theatre visits with likeminded people. I will admit the phrase has kind of lost its meaning…

I think calling it a safe space and giving it a memorial service is a bit melodramatic - but it's sad to lose any venue which people enjoyed going to. They still have the diner though, which I've never been to.

I'm obsessed with the fact that they didn't pay their rent and then are acting like they've been unfairly treated. Like, they've just been evicted for no good reason? Come on now...
Pay! Your! Rent!

Imagine tomorrow's vigil turning into a fully immersive production of RENT: How do you document real life When real life's getting more Like fiction each day Headlines--bread-lines Blow my mind And now this deadline "Eviction--or pay" Rent!

Where are the details of the event tomorrow?
I get the feeling there's a bit more to this than them just not paying rent as they are quite openly sharing the news stories on their Twitter feed.

Given it’s prime West End estate, it’s surprising they were allowed to not pay rent for so long even accounting for Covid

What a bizarre turn of events. I think I went in twice. Strangely as a solo theatregoer most of the the time I felt awkward in there alone, maybe other solo theatregoers were fine and it seemed popular with them but it felt awkward to be in there alone to me compared to 'normal' coffee shops. I think it is a shame to lose this though, it was a lovely idea and I know a special place for a lot of people.

I was in there on Saturday for the first time since 2019, and I must admit the spark had gone from the place and the music was far too loud. Sad to see it close as it did have some lovely events every so often!

The small family business angle they keep putting it is ignoring the fact the Theatre Cafe and Diner are owned by a ticketing agency.
