Really wonderful film, Glenda Jackson and Michael Caine are absolutely wonderful and it's a great story.

It was a very generous three stars for me. The script, editing and direction were poor, and it was saved only by the presence of Jackson. Sad that this was her final work. Felt like it was written by someone with little cinematic experience.

I saw this yesterday though there were 3 or 4 films I wanted to see far more, because this was the only one which would fit in pre-matinee. As expected it was the typical, ludicrously sentimental though solidly-made Brit-flick. If only the writers/directors of these films would cut half the syrup - though in this case there'd only have been half a film left - such films would be far more convincing and credible. And yes, the performances were great and it was good to see Glenda jackson's last but I'm beyond fed up with seeing the same few names playing "plucky old geezers" (Jim Broadbent, Michael Caine, etc) or "aged but spirited crone" (Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Penelope Wilton and so on). You know exactly what you're going to get and yes, there is a market and it's good to see older characters not only featuring but in leading roles, but I long for the day when they're not treated as something out of the ordinary and newsworthy simply for still being alive and showing it.
