The movie The Artist is getting a (I assume) musical stage adaptation! www.whatsonstage.com/news/the-artist-stage-adaptation-announces-lead-casting_1531032/The announced cast: Robbie Fairchild is George Valentin, Gary Wilmot is Al Zimmer, and Briana Craig is Peppy Miller. It “will play a strictly limited run from Saturday 11 May until Saturday 25 May 2024 at Theatre Royal Plymouth. Further plans for the production are to be revealed.“

this isn’t a musical - pretty sure it’s a dance show in the vein of Play Without Words?

this isn’t a musical - pretty sure it’s a dance show in the vein of Play Without Words? I put it in the musical section because the article includes credits for music, choreography and musical direction. I don’t know if there is a definitive label for it yet though

I think it's a dance show rather than a musical or maybe a play with dance.

It got my interest when I saw Robbie Fairchild. I saw him in Oklahoma at the Proms and An American in Paris. Great dancer and pretty good singer too.

Because traditional West End audiences need everything labelled and signposted for them. They need everything to be how they expected it to be. They can bill it as a dance show all they like but people will still rock up expecting a shiny new musical based on that funny silent movie Oscar winner. Its a great idea though. Good luck to them, but a fortnights run doesn’t indicate supreme confidence.

Did they say why? Website shows Tuesday 14th as the new first show The email said 'We’re getting in touch to let you know that, regrettably, we have had to take the difficult decision to cancel tomorrow evening’s first preview performance of The Artist. The company and crew have been working tirelessly to prepare this world premiere production and we're thrilled with what we've got in store for our audiences. However, due to our ambition, and mounting the show for the very first time, we require some extra technical time to get everything right for audiences.' I have a ticket for next Saturday too so hopefully it's okay by then 🤞

... we have had to take the difficult decision to ... That's one of my bugbears. When anyone ever says a decision was difficult, it's invariably the case that the making of the decision was actually quite easy as they had no other option, and the difficulties lie instead in dealing with the consequences.
