Were you at the matinee, Mallardo?
I enjoyed this very much, and had no issues with the production. Jonathan Bailey was wonderful, I loved his performance. For me, Sam Barks was sound but unexciting. A bit of a disappointment, acting wise. I really expected to love her and find him lacking, goes to show you shouldn't pre-judge!

Yes, I was. Were you? If so it's the second time we've missed each other. We were both at a matinee of Guys and Dolls, I believe, and actually within a couple of rows of each other that time.
Yesterday I was at the left end of the row E, empty seats next to me.

I was at the Saturday evening show and loved it. Barksy can sing anything, and I do think she got the emotion in Still Hurting and See I'm Smiling. The comedy was all really good in later songs too. I started off not liking JB during Shiksha Goddess but he quickly grew on me. Schmuel was good and there was no laughing to my ears during 'take your time' if anything there were audible 'ahhs'. The set needs some sound reduction. The clunking of moving set pieces, and those blooming windows which were smashing into each other as they flew in and out is not really expected given the price bracket of tickets for this show. However the score is beautiful and the immediate standing O as the lights came back on at the end was well deserved by both members of the cast. Revisited last week and I agree Sam is really good. Lots of emotion, and her face was acting every lyric. We even got a bit of her cat warm up routine too. The production still isn't as clear, in its progression to breakup,as the last version I saw with Lauren Samuels , but i think thats the intimate space then, some of JB's key lyrics bing drowned by the music, a clearer more negative male role, and a lot more signposting last time - am I imagining it or wasn't someone else in Jaimie' bed then at one key point? |

I loved this. Knew nothing about it walking in. Was amazing to sit in the second row and have Sam belting in my face. She's a tour de force.

This was bizarrely over-produced. No need for the windows, TV screens or random bits of set trundled on and off stage. You have two of the finest performers and one of the best sounding bands in London. Don't distract from the score.

Two productions of The Last Five Years are at the Edinburgh Fringe this year. I'm seeing the one at Paradise at Augustines, the other is at PQA Venues on the Royal Mile.
