Caught this on Broadway tonight. It’s closing soon.
I got an excellent Drops seat in the side Stalls. Great rake and a clear view. Pretty full too. The audience was 90% black.
A fun show, full of high camp. I can’t say The Wiz will ever be a favourite musical of mine, but this is performed as well as it can be. The highlight was seeing Deborah Cox on (coincidentally) her 50th birthday, which wasn’t acknowledged, but she was the last to leave the stage.
The usher in our section was quite the performer. A 5 minute talk about theatre etiquette at the start, reiterated during the interval, along with instructions about when to clap. Can’t say it fully worked, as there were still plenty of phones out, people talking, even heckling, but at least I didn’t hear any sweet wrappers. Also, the worst audience of all time for late arrivals and late returners after the interval.
Glad I managed to catch this, but there will never be much to it, not even compared with the musical it is parodying.

Sadly she only played the witch. I was not thrilled with the cuts at the beginning and the lack of Toto and a literal yellow brick road. I enjoyed the Mexico City production with its spinning turntable that rises from the stage at multiple angles. The voices in Mexico were superb as well. That production is playing through August along with a stunning production of Cabaret.
