I’ll post a full review from the first preview tomorrow, but I just had to share that a star was truly born tonight in Tom Francis. The staging of the title song ‘Sunset Boulevard’ and his performance of it was one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen in a theatre. This alone is worth the ticket price and received a standing ovation. You took the words out of my mouth! And yes, he has incredible charisma

Anyone that knows me can probs stop reading now as I am about to bang on about the same thing for the millionth time but why oh why are RUG era London revival cast recordings so few and far between, as in virtually non existent. I think (someone correct me of I am wrong) but Starlight Express (original and 1993 "new") and Phantom (OLC and RAH 25th) are the only London productions RUG have recorded twice! As you say Sondheim gets recorded every 5 mins. And Cameron is excellent at recording his revivals. Les Mis 25th, Miss Saigon Prince Edward, Oliver Drury Lane, Mary Poppins with Zizi and Charlie - all recorded! There’s a fantastic recording of the revival of Evita from the Adelphi as well!

There’s a fantastic recording of the revival of Evita from the Adelphi as well! Indeed - but that's the only London one of the RUG era! Joseph, Cats and Evita slightly different as there are loads of recordings of them before Really Useful Records was founded and ALW had total control. Weirdly, despite being the composer, seems he couldn't control who released what until Tell Me On A Sunday in the late 70's! All three of them then got recored once in London when ALW did have control (Palladium, Lyceum and Adelphi) but stage productions have not been recorded in UK since....

As essential to the "whole experience" as Nicole is I'd say. (I don't think he's missed a single show yet?)

Probably covered somewhere upthread but they’ve cut half of Surrender.
On my third visit thought I half noticed it but obvs couldn’t rewind time to check so looked out for it on my fourth.
Goes straight from “you are out of danger now” to “let them send their armies” now.
Put it back I say. It’s such a lovely melody and very short anyway.

My friend went to an early preview and said surrender wasn't there (or they didn't remember it). Shame as its one of my favourite ALWs, but often overlooked by the two big numbers.

I think it was but it’s so short now was very easy to miss! I was the opposite at the first preview in that I was so in awe of everything I didn’t notice they’d shortened it!

I mean admittedly it's reprised like 4 times Funnily though one of the (few) things I like about the LA CD is you get the Max reprise (so I play this game…) and the Norma one (when he scorned me I) as well as the usual Cecil B one. Have no idea if they were in the original London and just not on CD or if they were new in the LA revisions. I’d guess latter!

It’s a sublime melody IMHO. Reminds me a bit of Twisted Every Way.

Have just booked a third visit for beginning of Jan. Wanted the last night but my usual seats not available and what is left is either really expensive or right at the back.

It’s a sublime melody IMHO. Reminds me a bit of Twisted Every Way. And it's also the tune to The Lady's Paying ("You just point, I'll do the rest") and Eternal Youth Is Worth A Little Suffering ("We have dry heat, we have steam, We have moisturizing cream"). Took me a while to hear that :-) Looking forward to next week when I'm seeing this show. Saw Betty, Elaine and alas Petula. That last visit almost killed my enthousiasm. So flat and out of tune...

Can anyone confirm if the melody that Norma sings just before With One Look is used in The Woman In White? It feels very similar.

Great now my head will be stuck with ALW ear worms all day "They threw away the gold of SILENCE When all they needed was this FACE of mine" sounds like something from WIW or close to it. I'm thinking that when the WIW sings "You see I am no ghost before you, I am flesh and blood" but that's not quite the same.

Oh I thought Rachel had just messd up the words when I went last week, LOL. What a silly cut to make. She did actually sing the wrong lyrics during AIWNSG to be fair so I won’t blame myself for assuming it was her mistake bless

Wow. I went in last night ready to be a sceptical old man. But I was completely won over by this outstanding production. I just loved it. All of it. If I’m being honest if you do not know the story beforehand you probably haven’t a clue what’s going on for the first 15 minutes. But that didn’t seem to worry anyone around me. And once Norma has appeared just great things happen. A superb company. Bravissimo.

out of curiosity - do they sell any recording at the Savoy? Was wondering if they had either Patti or Glenn recording. Seriously would have to be a letdown for people after that performance

It’s increasingly common for merch stands not to sell CDs though. Maybe as everyone streams now?!

Why would they sell either recording on Sunset Boulevard? This is a completely new production.
