Fabulous review and descriptions @sampmiller Thanks for posting :-) I agree. That's newspaper worthy and so well written. Well done.

That's a great and enthusiastic review sampmiller.
As creative and original as this all sounds, as someone who was old enough to remember both the film and the original production vividly and fondly, I don't know how well this is going to sit with me.
That said, if I do get to see this, based upon the above, I'm prepared to be blown away!

I'm honestly glad Jamie Lloyd has not gone for copying either the original production or the film. It may divide people but I'd rather have something different then museum theatre.

I had really no plan to see this, but after reading the above. I think I might need to make a trip across from New York ( where I am after a cruise for 40 hours to see Sondheim’s Hear We Are ) before I head back to Australia in a couple of weeks. It sounds stunning.

How will this fare from the cheap stalls seats near the back? asking for a friend..

With the song cuts and reduced staging presume this makes a 2.15 hour show?
Great to see Tom Francis get such raves but sounds like Nicole matches so hopefully no issue of overshadowing the headline diva. Putting it down to first night pressure but in the twitter/X bows clips both look pretty apprehensive.

How will this fare from the cheap stalls seats near the back? asking for a friend.. Hmmm. I think you need to be able to see the whole of the screen (given that’s pretty much it set wise) so if the overhang cut off much of that, it could be suboptimal. Cheap seats wise, rear circles could be better.

Was 10pm exactly when I emerged onto Strand (having stayed for play out/end credits)! Lady’s Paying replaced by new scene with some of the former’s dialogue so you probs only lose a minute or two!

They looked very serious at curtain call but I put it down to emotion as its very intense at the end and the audience reaction was insane so probably trying to hold it together. Or Jamie Lloyd wanted them to keep in character throughout.

Just booked a 2nd viewing at the end of October to see how Rachel Tucker does it. The friend I took who had never even heard of the show before just phoned me and said she really wants to go again.

Apparently it's Sold Out tonight. mattnyc Great you're offering your ticket on the noticeboard here first, but if no takers I wonder if ATG would help out and take it from you as a return (as it's Sold Out)

Did you book regularly or the £20 exclusive seats? That £20 offer was for the first 5000 applicants, Sam. It could be that they’ve all been snapped up now? Eitherbway you had to go via this link sunsetboulevardwestend.com/exclusive-seats/

They´re not doing the scheme anymore. It was just one week.

They´re not doing the scheme anymore. It was just one week. Oh, that’s a shame. It should really be removed from the website in that case!

I love how Theatreboard gets ripped to shreds for negative reviews and toxicity, putting people off shows ect but you never hear when it actually makes people go to things instead because of it going down well. The amount of free PR and extra ticket sales this site has given certain shows I'm sure more than makes up for the amount it might have lost them. Couldn’t agree more, going from the reviews on TB; I’ve booked a matinee (Rachel) big fan of hers and weekday matinee works better for me. So excited!

I know we’ve only had one preview but what do we think Nicole and Tom’s chances at the Oliviers are?

This is more like it, (relatively) hands off appreciation; and what the recent years of his career could/should have been like.
When NS said in politer language on BBC R2 we're 'f-ing some s*** up' I wonder if that's what Jamie Lloyd told (not requested) ALW it would be like, or he'd do something else.
Makes me laugh that someone I know sitting near ALW at Open Air 'Evita' was certain ALW hated Jamie Lloyd's vision for it. Can't have watched the BBC casting shows, where we know that fidgeting, wincing, and gurning means.... he loves it!

When the actors stay in the emotional state of the show. We all know it’s pretend. Come out, bow, and be the actors not the characters. Worst way to end a performance. If directors don’t like it they should cut the bows entirely.

I’d normally agree but it kinda works here as the emotional state of the show continues post bows with the play out happening with house lights still down while literal credits roll on the screen!

If I was ALW there's NO WAY I'd have let them cut 'The Lady's Paying'..... to avoid Patti Lupone having an 'I told you so' moment. Haha.
