As the musical is practically sung through I don't see the problem with accents. And don't forget what Mrs Lovett is currently doing to the British accent on Broadway, I don't think anyone has the right to complain.

An Audra Gypsy would be super interesting as she's end up singing it entirely differently to how it's ever been sung before - but she would cause massive problems for Nicole.

She would need a good director though. Can't really think of any American ones directing musicals who are doing any genuinely interesting work. Maybe Daniel Fish, but doesn't really seem like of his interest.

She is the appalling sore thumb on so many excellent cast recordings, especially given that relative newcomer Gaten Mattarazzo has an excellent light “cockernee” on the new Sweeney OCR. I don’t mind in frothy youth stuff where everyone speaks tv american, but when the grown ups are talking it really matters to me.

Robyn Hurder and Kristina Rodriguez in SMASH Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard in DEATH BECOMES HER Kristin Chenowith in QUEEN OF VERSAILLES Nicole will have surprise on her side though since not many would expect this kind of incredible performance from her and the whole of Sunset Boulevard tailored to and around her. Everything else is pretty much "normal" roles in normal shows played by reliable Broadway stalwarts. And (don't shoot me) I find Audra McDonald massively overrated.

They better take Hannah Chamberlain with them, I doubt they’ll find someone that similar to Nicole over there. I completely agree. And it's not just the fact that they look similar. I though Hannah was fantastic. She was very expressional, the way she moved, her entire aesthetic. I cannot see someone else doing it tbh. Btw, since this is premiering in November, do y'all think there's a chance that Nicole will also star in Death Becomes Her in April? Her scheduling allows this now, right? Have they officially announced the full cast for that?

A bit surprised that they’re taking Betty, but the other three I can understand. I thought she and Artie were noticeably weaker than the other three. Congratulations to her and all the cast transferring though, will be a heck of an experience for all of them.

I have to admit, I was shocked by the difference in how much to mount in London ($2.5 million) as opposed to Broadway ($17 million) If that's accurate, no wonder ALW was saying what he was about the costs on Broadway when Phantom closed

Last night was my final visit - little tweaks and improvements still (lighting, tighter end to first half, lovely little "I'm ready for my close up - Broadway 2024" sizzle at the end of the credits).
Will miss this show hugely. We have been spoilt.

It really is the creative blueprint for moving forward both artistically & financially. Remove the expectations & shackles and find a different way to ‘stage’ these things. I see that they showed the Broadway trailer at yesterday’s matinee. Was anyone there and know how it worked? Did they show it before the show began? At the interval? After curtain call?

It was very close to being completely derided, a couple of missteps after opening and it could have been a very different story. We’d have been baying for blood. Fortunately it was carried off with such chutzpah and panache that most of us were won over. Brass band Carousel at the OAT, sexy Oklahoma… not quite as convincing.

Also not saying apply the no set/barefoot/white light model to everything - but just do something radically different and creative! Both this and Miss Saigon in Sheffield have made me so excited at the possibility of reinvention of musicals in totally different ways. I've also thought (for the very first time really) that I'd be indifferent to Phantom closing in London as it would give the opportunity to do something totally different with it. It's almost suffocated by it's own success. Anyway - my hunch is Starlight is gonna be radically different to what's gone before, so guess that's the next one..... We'll see how it goes!

Brass band Carousel at the OAT, sexy Oklahoma… not quite as convincing. I enjoyed both of them, though I disagree with the meddling of Carousel's plot. But these shows have been done several times in countless variations, even if rarely in such an edgy fashion. I for one would like to see more of the bloated monsters of 80s stripped down that worked well back then but seem ridiculous in today's far more sarcastic and cynic world. I'd be absolutely here for Jamie Lloyd stripping Phantom of the Opera down to some Film Noir, the opera's underground all black and white and filled with stage fog, showing the Phantom as the actual blood-thirsty obsessed predator he is. Of course the Phans would have conniptions (I'd be here for that too). Similarly, I'd quite like to see a modern dress version of Les Miserables, where the women are allowed to do more than whine and die.

I think it'll be fine. But I don't think it's guaranteed. In relative terms NYC has been a much harsher environment for ALW musicals than London. But then, it's in about as good a starting position as it could be I guess.

I was there - They just showed the trailer at the end of credits. A lot of people had left, but it got a big reaction from everyone who had stayed!
