Last night was my 3rd and final visit to see the show and managed to find someone to take the extra ticket. They had wanted to see the show but couldn't find anything within their price range so was very grateful and enjoyed the show. I had seen the show once with Rachel and once with Nicole (the very first preview). Nicole was amazing the first time but she seems to have really settled into the role now and, I mean this in a nice way, camper than ever. She gave full on mad woman. Tom Francis was spectacular as he was before. Out of interest does anyone know if he has been off at all during the run? If this goes to Broadway I really hope they take him as well, although I doubt it as I am sure they will want an American to play the role but he really deserves to reprise the role over there. Rest of the cast were great and the orchestra sounded sublime. Very well behaved audience and it just shows that you can go 1 hour 30 mins without needing to go to the bar for a drink or go to the loo.
I did have one thought though. There is a lot of dry ice smoke in this production. Does that not affect the actors voices?
Dress circle like a sauna and has been every time I have been to see this show.
Final thing was during the interval I went to the loo and was standing outside the access toilet as there was someone in there. A snooty woman came up and stood behind me and said "You aren't in a wheelchair". I told her I wasn't but I still had a disability. She just said "oh". Now I could have told her that she wasn't in one either and I think she wanted to use the access toilet as the queue for the ladies next door was long but how rude was that!

Given that NS was given the role over a British actor, isn’t there a chance that a reciprocal arrangement could be made to get Tom over to Broadway?

Glenn brought over Siobhan and Michael X to Broadway. If Nicole wants Tom to come over with her, I’m sure they’ll make it happen. Not sure if there even needs to be an exchange at this point. Many British actors from the West End production came to Broadway with Leopoldstadt.

I am sure they should be able to get Tom over there. I think the question is more would they be able to get David Thaxton over as well. (Grace will be in Hadestown so guess that's that part answered).

This thing has been (deservedly) so successful in London that New York will be panting for a reason to hate it. If it's more camp than mad, that could be it. I want this thing to be a success in NY and I know the NY critics who came over loved it at the time they saw it... but wondering... has she now gone too far with it?

I understand she starts Hadestown in February although I'm not sure how long her initial contract is for. I'd love for all four leads to transfer. They all did an outstanding job, I really can't imagine this with a different cast.

Music box, this is one of my bug bears. People seem to be enjoying the performance SO MUCH that instead of listening to the actual highlight of the song they’d rather clap or even worse scream over the top of it and ruin it for themselves and everyone else. Absolute stupid attention seeking behaviour. Filth. I am hearing #filth in the Kim Woodburn voice. But yes, self indulgent attention seeking is deeply annoying. (Though sadly OTT responses are encouraged by ITV, media and society generally now.....) Yes. At Guys and Dolls before Christmas, my parents had travelled 650 miles for their pre-Christmas theatre fix and some complete and utter attention seeking a-hole insisted on clapping early even before final notes had been sung along with the pretentious "bravo". It's the height of smug entitled rudery and spoils it for pretty much everybody else.

I went to see the matinee of this today - my last show of 2023. I have to say that I nearly did not book this when it was announced. The casting just did not inspire me, and I felt that Scherzinger was all wrong for Norma - no proven acting chops, the wrong age etc, and I love SUNSET too much. Well, I am happy to be proven wrong!
Starting with Nicole, she is perfect for this production’s interpretation of Norma. She is mad from the start, giving a very physical performance, rolling around the stage, convulsing and undulating in any number of body contortions. The sexual attraction between her and Joe is played up to the max and works. The singing, whilst not to my taste, is also done well enough. Her sustained ‘Home’ during ‘As If We Never Said Goodbye’ stretches the boundaries of good taste, and musicality for me, but I can understand dramatically why this was a choice. The audience clearly loved it though. She got a smattering of standing ovations from people in the Stalls after that song.
It is the other members of the cast that really impress though. Tom Francis as Joe is the standout, giving a stellar performance. I also really enjoyed Grace Hodgett Young as Betty. She gave a lovely performance that really benefitted from the close glance of the camera at certain moments. David Thaxton gave a slightly different take on Max that was very welcome.
It is the staging and direction that really makes this production of SUNSET however. It is just incredible! There are so many moments that just make this pop!
The Car Chase, with the title sequence, and stylised, contemporary movement from the company was a fantastic start.
The Entr’acte is nicely staged, with various ‘Easter Eggs’ and nods to past productions (starting with the watching of the original film, Nicole’s turban, the chimp costume, ‘Mad About the Boy’ on the mirror, the gun, the cut-out of Andrew Lloyd-Webber).
The Title Song is an amazing technical feat. The sound and video come across perfectly, and are in sync throughout. I am not sure how they managed this from the Theatre, all the way down the Strand, and then back into the Theatre, but it is absolutely to be commended.
The Hog-Eye moment in ‘As If We Never Said Goodbye’ still got me (just like in the ENO staging). The lights, the wind machine, the smoke, the swell of the orchestra! I had chills and tears in my eyes! Just beautiful!
Finally, Joe’s Death and Norma ‘s Mad Scene are absolutely breathtaking! The best version of these final moments that I have ever seen. The lighting (or lack of it in places), the blood! Again, I felt a little emotional seeing this - the first time that this has happened at this particular part of SUNSET. Nicole’s mad scene was truly unhinged. The lighting throughout is a real hallmark of the production.
The use of Young Norma, floating in and out was a masterstroke. I also liked how certain characters lingered or walked across the stage when they were clearly in the back of the mind of the characters (such as Norma staying on stage throughout ‘Too Much In Love to Care’ and during most of Joe and Betty’s interactions, or Artie walking across the stage when Betty can clearly thinking of him).
It was just refreshing to see a show I know well given such a radical that kept you guessing and on the edge of your seat. It was like seeing a completely new show. The line readings were also so different (with more modern anachronisms in places) that this too was surprising.
There were cuts to the material, and changes to lyrics, but what was there originally was not missed. I actually prefer it without ‘The Lady’s Paying’. Are there some cuts in ‘Too Much In Love to Care’?
This was clearly not a traditional SUNSET. It was as if Nicole in 2023 was seeing parallels between Norma’s life and her own (she a slightly faded pop singer), and was reenacting Norma’s story in her own head imagining how this would play out now (hence the modern style), giving a very meta interpretation of the material. However, that being said, it very much honoured the source material with the silent movie stylings and delivery, as well as the very obvious reliance on the film medium, as well as leaning heavily into the camp.
My only slight quibble would be that, if I did not already know the material, and was seeing SUNSET for the first time, would I have been able to keep up with what was going on? The lack of props and scenery could potentially cause confusion to the story-telling.
Oh, and the orchestra sounded gorgeous, helped by wonderful sound design!
This should definitely be winning awards for direction, lighting and sound design. This is my first Jamie Lloyd production, but will definitely not be my last.
I went with 4 stars, as I had minor issues with it, but still an absolutely incredible production, that I have been thinking about ever since I saw it this afternoon. I wish I could see it again!

It’s not great when a directorial choice causes confusion to a plot that has never been confusing before. Almost makes you think of the phrase “style over substance”.

Who was confused by it? Certainly not the poster above, nor the majority of people who have seen it. So clearly not style over substance.
You would think it because you didn't like it.

So I was lucky enough to win a Lottery ticket to this for todays matinae, I had delayed getting tickets due to not knowing when I'd be home for Christmas and then lucked out with lottery tickets but to be honest if I had paid a lot for a ticket I'd have been happy. I wish I'd just booked to see it earlier and hoped I could make it because im gutted I won't get to see it again.
I loved the direction and style of the piece I did find some of the things Nicole did a bit cringe but I think that's really the point and her final moments really did show her shine I believe as an actress, she has almost been directed in such a way it's actually hard to tell what is her what is her acting what is her acting acting if that makes any sense. Her voice was lovely and actually she reserved a lot and didn't just go full throttle all the time which surprised me but I loved.
As a previous poster said I was a bit annoyed when I heard there were some cuts especially the lady's paying but the show felt all the better and much tighter for it and i usually love the big swelling ending of too much in love to care but this new arrangement worked so well especially with the style of the show and the direction.
I loved how Betty and Joe were the first characters to look at each other it cemented for me they had a genuine chemistry rather than the fake relationships of Hollywood. I felt by the end Nicole's Norma was essentially no longer human but a monster the monster of the hollywood machine the monsters we create (that was my take anyway)I thought it was sublime.
The opening credits style sequence during the car chase was very James Bond I loved it and as has been discussed at length the whole opening to act two is absolutely marvellous I actually cried because I was just so impressed by it all it was so clever and bizarrely subtle and in your face all at the same time also how fit must he be all the walking up and down stairs and then having to do the song.
David Thaxton was amazing in this by the end he really moved me again tears were flowing I loved the whole take off the microphone thing going on as people were sort of bowing out.
Grace Hodgett Young is amazing I was really impressed with her performance and cannot wait to see her next endeavours
Tom Francis of course as has been said is wonderful he gave a great performance and it was so clear to see his done eitb Hollywood attitude.
The whole cast were fabulous I loved all of it the staging the choreography the set the camera work.
Top points for incredible lighting and sound design if all Shows could sound this good I'd be a very happy boy.
The lyric changes all felt fine to me unlike some other shows were it has felt clunky at times I also much prefer let's do lunch it seems to make much more sense.
I didn't think I would rate this 5 stars but I can't give it anything less I would love to see this again and would be interested to see it with Rachel or another Norma just to see the differences.
Right sorry this post is far too long and I've rambled on.

Sorry just a question I feel like with one look didn't have the key change down at the end am I correct or just mishearing? I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) it still has the key change but it's earlier - at the start of the orchestral section in the middle rather than at the end of it when Norma starts singing again. I'll check next time I go!

I'll check next time I go! You are correct in saying that the key change is still there, but it comes in the short orchestral section within the song. I think by doing it this way, though, it does seem to make the song ending (the final ‘I’ll be me….’) slightly higher in tone than Buckley/Close, but slightly lower than the LuPone original. The changing of the key at that point works well and is somehow less ‘jarring’, I think.

Both of these would be good news but how do you know these things if you don’t mind me asking?! I find it quite rude to ask people how do they know things - it's up to you whether to believe them or not, it's an online forum after all. People might not want to reveal their sources, and frankly it's none of our business.
