The original run W/E Joes all seemed age appropriate. Do people ‘break’ earlier these days so we have a glut of mid-20’s male leads instead?

My understanding is that how this production will be ‘reimagined’ is yet to be confirmed, but interestingly LondonTheatreDirect’s paid social media ad (seen on Facebook) reads as follows:
Nicole Scherzinger stars in this new concert version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical about a faded Hollywood icon.
‘Concert version’?!

Oh I do hope this is a typo/cock-up. I mean, I’d happily go and watch it, but surely the pricing would be concert level, not acknowledging sight lines so much etc.

To be fair I don’t think of them as a primary ticket site so suspect they’ve just got their wires crossed and made a mistake. Interesting though!

Good point. A lot of these male leads these days seem to be barely graduated from drama school - I hate to break it to you, guys, but as you grow older, other people suddenly look very young PS: I would agree that Tom would look extremely young compared to classic Normas like Patti, Elaine or Glenn, but not if they need to keep a significant age difference to Nicole's younger-looking Norma. Besides, we still don't know what Lloyd may be cooking up.

But then again the character is supposed to be a jaded screenwriter with previous work under his belt, not some fresh faced jock straight out of college. Ageing everyone down works up to a point, but not when it interferes with the characterisation or the actual story.

Ageing everyone down works up to a point, but not when it interferes with the characterisation or the actual story. Well, let's say he's early 30's 0 which Mr Gillis is - he could have easily been in the business for 5-10 years. Enough time to get very jaded. But it has to be PLAYED as such. Not even if the actor looks on the fresh faced side, surely he can bring a bit of grit and worldliness if he's a good actor - again I bring it back to Danny Mac as an excellent example.

To me he looks late 20’s/early 30’s which is fine as a playing age for Joe, and his voice is great too.

To be honest as long as they aren't 10 years old and can sing and act I don't really care about age differences.

Of all the Joe's I've seen, the only one I think that really got it spot on was the original, Kevin Anderson

Honestly, in all the casting chaos - between Patti and Glen - I felt worse for Anderson. Granted I never saw him live, just basing on pics and listening to the CD's his voice and vocal performance sounded spot on. Alan Campbell sounded (and acted) over the top for me. Could've been he was coached that way by Nunn - perhaps they had to make his performance less subtle/understated to match Close. When they first announced Close for NY - I was excited thinking Anderson was joining her

I think producers like to cast a fresh-faced young lead and always have - think Julie Andrews in My Fair Lady. They love the story of the young "discovery" and the fact that they don't have to pay them the salary of a more experienced "star" name.
Tom Francis will be just fine opposite a younger Norma. I think he can easily play late twenties - is he in his late twenties?

When they first announced Close for NY - I was excited thinking Anderson was joining her I only knew Anderson from the OLC, and thought he was great. Also quite shocked at how full-on Alan Campbell was on the second recording. However, once I got used to Campbell I find Anderson sounds not just laconic (good) but almost sleepy (not so good) in comparison. I defer to those who saw him live and thought he was excellent though - but I wonder if they were in really good seats. For me he sounds perfect for the intimate 'radio drama' version I first heard the OLC as. Whereas I can see that as a somewhat Brechtian and declamatory narrator Campbell's Joe could take in the whole house with that flourish. (The theatre house, and the Napier floating one).

I guess the ENO production had such a big budget (for "personnel") that they could afford a more seasoned, Olivier nominated performer like Michael Xavier

I saw Anderson twice and can confirm he absolutely nailed it. He oozed laconic charisma, leaving the histrionics to La LuPone.

I saw both Anderson and LuPone several times and witnessed both growing into their parts and nailing them. The show had a shaky start. I remember the ending being really flat and leaving audiences cold. Once they added the reprise of With One Look at the end, audiences reactions started to change and the show started to grow on people. For me LuPone and Anderson had great chemistry. I saw every London cast after them. Enjoyed most of them but for me LuPone and Anderson are still the best Norma and Joe.
