Hey all, having remembered that our phones nationwide will apparently be sounding on the 23rd at 3pm.. how will this go down in theatres with shows on that day?!! If anyone has any Sunday matinee shows booked, hopefully it doesn’t cause too much disruption haha www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-65178240

It's a worry for domestic violence organisations who have given 'secret phones' to victims

It's a worry for domestic violence organisations who have given 'secret phones' to victims Yes I read about that earlier too. If anyone does need to opt-out, there's information on how to do so here: www.gov.uk/alerts/how-alerts-workThe government are urging people not to opt-out unless you really need to, since the system is intended to alert people to significant danger. But it's good to get the information out there for people who may be worried about the implications on their personal circumstances.

I'm hoping shows will do a new, cast on stage announcement saying "we really do mean off this time, and it'll be pretty obvious it is you who has ruined it for everyone" but my show doesn't have a Sunday show that day to find out.

I don't want to be that person who is always contrary and I believe other countries have similar systems in place (anyone any experience of this?) but what kind of danger are we talking about here? Nuclear attack? As Rylance’s character says in that movie, ‘Would it help?’ Other dangers are more local, surely, flooding in Worcester say or mad dogs in Birmingham so what not test locally? Why this ooo aaaah the whole country stuff? Just gets on people’s what’s its.

I always switch off my phone at night so if World War III breaks out after midnight I'm afraid I won't be available.

I don't want to be that person who is always contrary and I believe other countries have similar systems in place (anyone any experience of this?) Loads of other countries have systems in place - for example all the G7 countries I think. You may recall that in 2018 the people in Hawaii running the system sent out the following message to everyone by mistake: "Ballistic missile threat inbound to Hawaii. Seek immediate shelter. This is not a drill." After 38 minutes or so they sent another saying it was a false alarm.

I remember it being tested by accident one time in the early hours of the morning - quite the unexpected way to be woken up in the middle of the night!! On my recent visit there it was used to inform of the state of emergency declared following the cyclone. I believe it was used a few times during 2020 for pandemic related announcements.

Nica Burns was on the news saying that people will be told “politely” to turn their phones off at tomorrow’s matinees. Wrong decision IMHO. It’s a one-off test that they know is going to happen and that it lasts a few seconds. Just let it happen and carry on.
Coincidentally, I watched a Japanese film (Suzume) earlier today that featured them.

I was in the Netherlands and got one. It was a bit eerie, everybody's phone suddenly going off at the same time. It was only a test though.

Even though I knew it was happening, it made me jump - especially as it came early!

Well that was underwhelming and it went off early which shows how much trust we can put in the people who operate this things, it sounded like someone had left a fire door open for a few seconds : if it went off while I was asleep I would be none the wiser. God knows how much was spent on that 😒

I didn't get one! It's an older phone though - too old for the NHS app during covid.

Mine was a minute early. Clever to have an element of surprise.

Mine didn't go off. Apparently quite a few people didn't get it on Three, but some others too.

Mine came one minute early Just seen a post by a BBC reporter that, as predicted, it disturbed matinee performances this afternoon including Frozen where apparently the actors onstage joked about it and carried on.

Loved the American accent of the lady giving the message. At least it could have been British.

I was going to ask if it went off! Zero disturbance at Newsies (1pm). We did get a pre-show text, various pinned signs in the building, told on the way in, told during ticket checks, told by another usher when seated, then three separate checks by ushers during the interval. So, it is possible for theatre audiences to comply!
Wembley on the other hand was rather rowdy. Remind me to never visit on FA Cup Semi Final Day again!

Scared the c$ap out of me. It felt directionless and piercing - everything everywhere all at once; communal fire alarm, kitchen/smoke alarm, car alarm ... phone alarm. Must have been awkward for the security at Aldi. Made me nostalgic for the street sirens which, for you young folks, gave you enough time to climb under a table before being incinerated in nuclear Armageddon.
