Have skipped through some of the tracks and most of it sounds beautiful. Why they chose to release (and keep) those godawful tracks is beyond me. They don't even sound the same as the rest of the album. Anybody got a clue what's happened? Totally agree. Listening to the FLAC tracks on Tidal and it sounds superb. What the hell were they doing with those early releases? Must admit, I'm relieved and happy. In hi-res, it sounds great.

The whole album is a great listen but the title song and Make Up My Heart are my highlights.

The whole album is a great listen but the title song and Make Up My Heart are my highlights. The songs where the voices are blended are the best. The Megamix has the solos way too loud. Kayna (Pearl) and Jade (Momma) come out of it best. I Do is OK too.

Kayna, Jade and Jeevan all sound amazing I agree. The soundtrack overall sounds sanitised and loses impact because of it. Starlight really should have been recorded live. The cast are more than capable and the studio recording is not really a true reflection of the show when you go and actually see it.

I like having the new songs to listen to, since apple music decided that I wasn’t allowed to listen to the Bochum cast recording any more. Some are much better mixed than others.

Does the music leading into Rolling Stock stop in the show too? On the recording, the big climatic end to the Entry of Trains pauses after 'Diesel Locomotive in History' and doesn't start again until the start of Rolling Stock, which sounds terrible. I wonder if this is a choice for the album because Rolling Stock was mixed so differently?

I had a listen and my opinion is the same as seeing it live, I enjoyed the show, I also enjoyed the cast recording but, but, but, however the titular song ‘Starlight Express’ was ruined by a person who cannot sing it, it is a song that require power more than being melodious. This song should be sung by someone in the vocal range of a tenor, but in the show/cast recording it is sung by someone and let me be a bit generous and call it a baritone, it will take a lot for me to get used to it, I won’t get used to it all the time the glorious Ray Shell sings this on past recordings, Ray was in total command of that song, on the new recording well you work it out.

I've got to be honest, having seen the show with Scott Haywood as Rusty, this recording has been somewhat of a disappointment compared to his vocals which suited the score better and with more warmth and exuberance in songs like Crazy.

Dunno how they decided to release 3 tracks that were fairly middling because the rest of the album is pretty great. The drums are so utterly DIRTY on Wide Smile and it sounds great. I do think some of the vocals can feel very flat, very overly processed but I suppose maybe that's the intention? Compared to other cast records I feel like their direction was more to create a pop sound than a cast recording, and so you don't really hear them "acting" as their characters? It's very hard to describe. I love this cast but this pales in comparison to the glory of the original London album which still sounds so phenomenal even all this time later (and was recorded partly live apparently?? In 1984!!) This orchestration definitely is struggling with no real brass. Some of the most hairraising moments when I listen to the OLC are when the brass play the reprises of AC/DC and He Whistled At Me in the races. It brings a tear to my eye sometimes because the latter just thunders in after one of the best drum fills on the album. (Timestamped)

I agree 100% - these new orchestrations are really lacking. The sound in the theatre is great, but wow, they really messed up the band. Such a shame. If the show does move venue once the Troubadour closes (as ALW mentioned on Radio 2 this morning), I hope they make some changes - a better set for skating on and re orchestrate it and add some brass/sax back to the band. It’s a very good production, but it could easily be great with a few changes. I know it wouldn’t likely happen, but if they could get Arlene back as choreographer, that would be amazing!! Now I’m just dreaming…

Now I’m just dreaming… Yes the choreography is a bit basic. (I know it’s going to be extra difficult on skates!) This production has seemed to try and minimise the fact they’re trains a lot of the time (choreo and costumes). A couple of extra lines here and there would make the show so much better and give the characters a lot more depth (coaches, Slick and Hydra particularly.) Back to the recording, I wish they hadn’t cut Freight like that.

Now I’m just dreaming… I think this show would work superbly in the Gillian Lynne Theatre. Not in its current form it wouldn't, the GL is not big enough. ALW likely wants something similar to the Troubadour. I wonder if Battersea Power Station has any unused space both in the actual building or nearby. The O2 could work as there is a lot of unused space.

The Gillian Lynne is a great shout! Much easier for the tourists to get to as well. It’s ideally shaped for adding race tracks through the stalls. Might be a tad on the small side though. Although with Totoro moving in, it might be a while until it’s available again.
