Cutting the show - my understanding as a non-expert, making this work with fewer actors, perhaps cutting characters and lines, having actors play multiple roles or taking on lines usually said by others etc - all while making dances make sense. I imagine it’s particularly hard with roller skating and where quick costume changes aren’t possible.

Funny you should ask. I was wondering if I’d dreamt there was an alternate. Did she ever go on? I don’t think so! She got injured during skate school.

Was anyone there yesterday? They had a record number of covers on, then had to cut the show part way through the first half. How did it go? I was there yesterday and there were 14 roles out of 21 covered. They cut the role of Wrench completely and in certain sections only had 2 components on stage instead of 4, whereas in other places the 3 cover components came on and there was an obvious gap where Wrench should be. All the understudies and swings were excellent. If you didn’t know the show and cast as well as I do you never would have known anything was different. I was massively impressed with Catherine’s greaseball and Lara’s Belle. Also shout out to Gary,s Tassita, he was excellent. The new girl Control was on too (Aanya) and she was bloody brilliant, the best one I’ve seen yet. the only weird thing about the show was that a child dropped a metal 500ml thermos style bottle from the front row of the high up trackside seats, directly onto the track below during act one. Made an almighty noise and but was swiftly dealt with, and thankfully noone was skating directly underneath at the time or it could have been very nasty.

Always in awe of the cast, but especially so yesterday. Cut from after Make Up My Heart. Kelly (on for Wrench) did a split track as Volta for the second race. There were some other minor changes in the second act too (e.g all three components went off before two came back on with the money). Always love seeing the different takes on characters - Gary was particularly brilliant as Tassita.

Wow, well done to them - I can't imagine trying to cover such a complex show.

Serious props to that entire cast and backstage team; shining example of "The show must go on"

Honesty this cast is as good as it gets. I was there on Saturday night and it was a seamless show, they are all so talented, huge respect to them all.

She got injured during skate school. Thanks, I avoided clicking like as that gives the wrong impression, but appreciate knowing. Such a shame, but glad she quickly found other work. Thanks everyone also for the details of the show edits. The Components are the only parts I can think of where they could easily trim this.

I was there at the matinee on Saturday, and had no idea about any of this - neither the original incident, nor the fact it was a 'cut show' from partway through the second act. Kudos to the cast and those responsible for working it all out on the hoof - if I hadn't read it here I would have no idea that wasn't how the show was supposed to be!
The only thing I did notice was the big bang when the bottle was dropped from the upper level, though I didn't see what it was at the time!

Serious props to that entire cast and backstage team; shining example of "The show must go on" Absolutely but should a cast be put in this position? When I did the show a gazillion years ago we all used to love the backstage swapping of roles. I once played Espresso, was changed to Dustin half way through act one only to be told I was Electra in Act 2. That only happened once to me. We had various set ups for the bridge not working, alternative race routes and show set ups without various roles (mostly ensemble tracks). We all actually welcomed such predicaments - doing the same performance after several months became rather repetitive. We were rehearsed for all eventualities.

Think happens quite a bit.
Wrench has been cut for long periods in Bochum previously. Ditto Krupp back in the day.
Can imagine if you’re in a long runner it’s quite good fun and a positive challenge. (And you get to gush on social media about #savingtheday, being a #legend, a #star etc etc. Actors love that. So it’s good news all round really!)

So the record company hasn’t helped with the way it describes things but in reality all versions are highlights. The “deluxe” double vinyl misses Call Me Rusty, Laughing Stock, Act 1 races, The Rap and pre Race 4. And it omits all recitative/linking sections. Judging by the song lengths released, many songs have been shortened. It’s 65 mins in total so about half the show. This is also the streaming and download version. The CD is shorter and cuts a few of these. The single vinyl much shorter and cuts a lot more. I think naming the double vinyl deluxe and not highlights is a bit disingenuous. But rather suspect I’m being an MT geek pedant. It’ll work as marketing for the public who will probs see it as #deluxe. The social media adverts and store are finally showing the correct details for the CD. CD tracklist is: 1. Overture / Entry of Trains 03:52 2. Rolling Stock 02:53 3. Crazy 02:10 4. I Am Me 03:19 5. Whistle At Me 02:38 6. Freight Is Great 02:46 7. Hydrogen 03:04 8. AC/DC 04:01 9. Pumping Iron 03:32 10. Make Up My Heart 03:22 11. Momma’s Blues 02:43 12. Starlight Express 03:35 13. U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D 02:22 14. Wide Smile 01:45 15. The Race 01:25 16. I Am The Starlight 04:17 17. The Final Race 02:55 18. One Rock 'N' Roll Too Many 02:43 19. I Do 04:18 20. Light at the End of the Tunnel 03:27 21. Megamix 05:28 The “deluxe” vinyl tracklist is : SIDE A 1. Overture / Entry of Trains 03:52 2. Rolling Stock 02:53 3. Crazy 02:10 4. I Am Me 03:19 5. Whistle At Me 02:38 6. Freight Is Great 02:46 17 minutes, 38 seconds SIDE B 7. Hydrogen 03:04 8. AC/DC 04:01 9. Pumping Iron 03:32 10. Make Up My Heart 03:22 11. Momma’s Blues 02:43 12. Starlight Express 03:35 20 minutes, 17 seconds SIDE C 13. U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D 02:22 14. Wide Smile 01:45 15. The Race 01:25 16. I Am The Starlight 04:17 17. The Final Race 02:55 12 minutes, 44 seconds SIDE D 18. One Rock 'N' Roll Too Many 02:43 19. I Do 04:18 20. Light at the End of the Tunnel 03:27 21. Megamix 05:28 Quick comparison but to me it seems that the deluxe vinyl and the Cd are same tracks and same time length. Also the version on Spotify shows when it is released it will be the same 21 tracks as above.

Even though it’s only 50% of the whole show, it does contain every song and melody - apart from The Rap!
Wonder why on earth The Rap was missed out. Opening of Act 2 pretty key moment. And it would easily fit on deluxe vinyl and CD.
Bizarre! But then most things about this release have been, IDK 🤷🏻♂️

Is ‘I Do’ the song that was written by ALW’s son?
I do find it odd that the song list to Starlight (& Tell Me On A Sunday) keep changing. Like Chess - and Martin Guerre - they’re never presented the same way twice! I get the ‘wholesale renovation’ thing - as in the radical Sunset - but does constant tinkering actually improve established properties? Does it widen their appeal? Or just annoy established fans? (The lyric changes to Miss Saigon spring to mind, as they serve no purpose and are largely inferior to the original, IMO. And don’t get me started on Her Or Me/Now That I’ve Seen Her/Maybe… )
Maybe Phantom is next? Why not swap out Music Of The Night for a brand new little ditty?

When shows are rewritten, it means the creatives aren't entirely happy with it. Chess is an example where it's less a score issue and more a book issue. Some shows have changes whenever a new production opens elsewhere like Wicked which added a new scene, changed another scene and cut a piece of scenery when it came to London and it was incorporated elsewhere, Lion King is 9 minutes shorter than when it opened but that's more for timing reasons than creative reasons. By Jeeves is a complete reworking of Jeeves but since hardly anyone saw Jeeves, By Jeeves has become

On the wider point, I don't think there has ever been a musical where the writers haven't tinkered with it down the line. Shows are living things that evolve.

Went again last night, still a really great, fun show.
A poor person up the top must have fainted as there was a lot of fuss, fanning of programmes and people moving about before the Interval, hope they were okay.

For anyone wondering about the cast recording, they did not Update Crazy to the proper mix from the radio for release.....
Which isn't great

Have skipped through some of the tracks and most of it sounds beautiful. Why they chose to release (and keep) those godawful tracks is beyond me. They don't even sound the same as the rest of the album. Anybody got a clue what's happened?
