Been thinking about this, and if we're saying 15 new musicals are eligible for the Olivier, I'd be hard pressed to nominate 4 of them tbh

The BAFTAs do have 5-6 nominees these days (then there’s the 10 nominees for Outstanding British Film)…I’m fine with this rather than a poor p*ss 3-4 nominees…I really hope the Oliviers will start giving out a Best Casting in a Musical and Best Casting in a Play category (the casting director is the recipient/nominee). They should have listened to the heeds of the fans and audiences begging for these categories to be created.

With the reviews that she got, I think Sarah Snook is the favorite to Win Actress right now.
I would say Andrew Scott too but he has a fierce competition from James.

With the nominations coming out on Tuesday, has anyone got any predictions of which shows will do well?

Final predictions, with some interesting changes based on new openings! Use as basis for discussion/argument/vehement disagreement...
Best New Play WINNER: Dear England at National Theatre - Olivier / Prince Edward The Motive and the Cue at National Theatre - Lyttelton / Noel Coward Stranger Things: The First Shadow at Phoenix Theatre The Hills of California at Harold Pinter Theatre
Still think Dear England will win. I know, I know... no "A Little Life." No "Picture of Dorian Gray" too. But I can't see a new Butterworth, produced by Sonia Friedman, not getting in. Same with "Stranger Things."
Best Play Revival WINNER: Vanya at Duke of York's Medea at @sohoplace The Effect at National Theatre - Lyttelton Macbeth at Donmar Warehouse
Weakest category this year. Vanya could quite easily win, given the recent NT Live and the stellar central performance.
Best New Musical WINNER: Operation Mincemeat at Fortune Theatre Next to Normal at Donmar Warehouse The Witches at National Theatre - Olivier The Little Big Things at @sohoplace
It's probably an easy win for "Operation Mincemeat" now. "Two Strangers," "Just for One Day," "A Strange Loop" and "Hadestown" all have a chance, but I can't see which one of the above four would be cut.
Best Musical Revival WINNER: Sunset Boulevard at Savoy Theatre Crazy for You at Gillian Lynne Theatre La Cage Aux Folles at Regents Park Open Air Guys and Dolls at the Bridge Theatre (If no G&D: 42nd Street? Wizard of Oz? Could be anything.)
WhatsOnStage seems to think "Guys and Dolls" will be nominated... so I'm putting it in. "Sunset" still takes it.
Best Actress WINNER: Sarah Snook for The Picture of Dorian Gray at Theatre Royal Haymarket Sheridan Smith for Shirely Valentine at Duke of York's Theatre Tuppence Middleton for The Motive and the Cue at National Theatre - Lyttelton Laura Donnelly for The Hills of California at Harold Pinter Theatre Cush Jumbo for Macbeth at Donmar Warehouse
Snook seems a clear winner here - Sheridan Smith was too long ago, and Snook is glitzier. They'll love the Succession of it all.
Best Actor WINNER: Andrew Scott for Vanya at Duke of York’s James Norton for A Little Life at Harold Pinter Mark Gatiss for The Motive and the Cue at National Theatre - Lyttelton / Noel Coward Joseph Fiennes for Dear England at National Theatre - Olivier / Prince Edward David Tennant for Macbeth at Donmar Warehouse
It's between Scott, Norton and Fiennes, and it'll be very, very close. Think the NT Live of Vanya (and success of All of Us Strangers) will help Scott.
Best Actress in a Musical WINNER: Nicole Scherzinger for Sunset Boulevard at Savoy Theatre Cassie Levy for Next to Normal at Donmar Warehouse Marisha Wallace for Guys and Dolls at the Bridge Theatre Katherine Kingsley for The Witches at National Theatre - Olivier (If no G&D: Dujonna Gift for Two Strangers?)
Scherzy for the win. Think Kingsley will come with the NT Gold Rush.
Best Actor in a Musical WINNER: Daniel Mays for Guys and Dolls at the Bridge Theatre Ed Larkin for Little Big Things at @sohoplace Kyle Ramar Freeman for A Strange Loop at Barbican Theatre Charlie Stemp for Crazy for You at Gillian Lynne Theatre (If no G&D: Sam Tutty for Two Strangers?)
Mays may well be the only win for G&D if it gets in, so that'd be good.
Best Director WINNER: Jamie Lloyd for Sunset Boulevard at Savoy Theatre Sam Mendes for The Motive and the Cue at National Theatre - Lyttelton / Noel Coward OR The Hills of California at Harold Pinter Theatre Rupert Goold for Dear England at National Theatre - Olivier / Prince Edward Nicholas Hytner for Guys and Dolls at the Bridge Theatre Stephen Daldry for Stranger Things at Phoenix Theatre
It's Lloyd's year, much like it was Frecknall's for Cabaret. This will serve as recognition of Sunset as well as The Effect.

I feel like it’s been a VERY good year for musicals in particular.
Rooting for Operation Mincemeat and Two Strangers (if eligible) - it would just be brilliant. I am expecting The Big Little Things to be on there (Sophie for Medea - good year potentially for @sohoplace) + a few nominations for Sunset Boulevard. I’m expecting Clyde’s and Next to Normal on there especially a few acting moms.
The Witches had brilliant costumes for ensemble / wigs etc
I wonder if Bridge will be eligible too… and if Marisha gets a nomination (second year in a row) would she be informed in CBB?!
I’m awaiting with baited breath…!

How does the same production of a show returning to its original venue (Groundhog Day) and a West End transfer of the same production (Hadestown) equal a revival nomination?!

Wow - some not entirely unexpected nominations across all categories, and just shows how lucky we are to have such top-notch theatre in the UK.

As much as I love Groundhog - I’m quite shocked that was eligible again! How’s Hadestown 2:0 even eligible …. ?!?! Op Mincemeat best actress and supporting in a musical - I feel they’re all ensemble led?! But so happy for them.

La Cage did get costume design. I have a bad feeling that it's going to be a Sunset sweep in the acting categories, even though both the male awards should go to other people

Wasn’t there talk of “La Cage” still transferring? If so, I wonder if this puts an end to that.

I have a bad feeling that it's going to be a Sunset sweep in the acting categories, even though both the male awards should go to other people Jack Wolfe won the WoS and BroadwayWorld UK so I'm hoping he can upset a Sunset sweep. And Charlie Stemp should win in lead. I'm really disappointed for Kyle Freeman who should've been nominated for A Strange Loop. ETA: Add me to the list of people disappointed for La Cage.

But I agree, he should be the one winning, as should Stemp. For me, you could replace Francis with at least a few others off the top of my head, and not lose much, if it all. That cannot be done with Stemp.
