Fireworks - never liked them. Even as a child I somehow knew they were stupidly expensive and every time one went off I could just imagine money exploding into the air that could be used for something actually fun. If I want to see an amazing fireworks display I can easily close my eyes and dream one up, like when you win a game of Solitaire on an old PC. Humbug.
Unrelated, more food/drink opinions:

The commercial plastic trashfest of begging and criminal damage that is now Halloween can knob right back off to the USA where it belongs.
Last night my friend and I came out of Charing Cross Theatre around 9pm, and a child no older than 5 ran up to us on Villiers Street with a bucket saying Trick or Treat. We couldn't see an adult in sight following him. Such a strange place to do it.

I haven't had any trick-or-treaters come round for years.
I used to love bonfire night when I was a child. Sparklers that shower your hand with fragments of burning metal. Rockets that explode with a quiet "phut". Catherine wheels that spin three quarters of a turn before falling into a puddle. Merry flames from the garden fence and drops of molten plastic from the washing line. Crunching on ash-covered charcoal rods that once were sausages. Happy days.

Hope you checked your pockets immediately, ellie1981. Sounds like classic distraction robbery tactics to me. Nope, all clear on that front. My non cash carrying mate did however ask him if he accepted Apple Pay.

I'm starting to find some Status Quo songs enjoyable. Is that an unpopular opinion? Some Status Quo songs are enjoyable. I have a music opinion that I bet is more unpopular than that. Until his health stopped him from being able to play drums anymore, Phil Collins was a brilliant musician and he too has some good stuff on his albums. (And I found his autobiography Not Dead Yet a thumping good read). And Genesis were an excellent band that don't get the credit they deserve.

Oh, and Motown and 60s soul are massively overrated, over-praised and disproportionately venerated. As is reggae.

Actors who like telling us how they’re riddled with insecurities, terrified every time they have to perform, crippled with stage fright etc. Apparently they’re saying that despite ‘hating’ what they’re doing they will carry on doing it at a huge personal sacrifice ... for us.
Don’t bother.
If that’s how you feel either keep it to yourself or step aside and let someone who actually enjoys the job to take your place.

It's not really an opinion as such, but with several comments about different bands and types of music recently, I have to ask...
Am I the only one who just doesn't "get" the different genres of music? I was on the fringes of a conversation about grunge yesterday, and I have absolutely no idea what grunge is. I have no idea what any of these genres are. There's loads of music I like from just about every style that has ever existed, but out of the hundreds of singles I own there's probably only two or three where I could say what genre they are. I can name hundreds of artists whose work I've bought but if someone asks "Do you like [genre] music?" I can only answer "I have no f***ing idea".

@thematthew No, you're not the only one. I lump pretty much anything that's not classical music or musical theatre into the category "pop". I then ignore the contents of said category as much as I can!

I think I mostly get what the genres mean but I'm not fussed about them. I don't usually tend to define my tastes in music by genres.I just like... stuff. Recently someone said a band were "maths rock". I had no idea what this was. The person who said it is genre-obsessed. When once asked what type of music one of my favourite bands is, all I could think to say was indie-trance-gaze-electro-pop-rock.

I get confused over the sub genres, particularly the million and one Dance ones as well as Rock. Like for instance, I know I like Hard Rock and Soft Rock, and I know I have a general distaste for Indie Rock, but I can’t really explain why or what it is I like and don’t like about them.

I hate it when you say you didn't like a show or a performer, then someone else says it/they won an award in order to prove you are wrong I guess (see the Heathers thread). Awards mean nothing to me these days. Yes, I'm happy when my favourite show or actor wins one, but it doesn't prove anything; most are just a popularity contest.
Probably not an unpopular opinion, but it needed to be said.

Probably not an unpopular opinion, but it needed to be said. Awards are not about rewarding the best whatever/whoever; they're about publicising the industry as a whole to the wider world. If the best whatever/whoever actually gets rewarded it's a happy accident. Or anyway, it's certainly the case for film and theatre. Just look at the press coverage that film awards get - much more free advertising than the movie studios could hope to buy even if they pooled their awards campaign funds, and all aimed at sending the message that film is culturally important and something people should at least pretend to know something about. Theatre awards are a bit more niche but the same principle applies - they're generally a lot more impressive to people who don't get to go to the theatre much than to those of us who do. Although every year so far I have failed to see everything nominated in the main categories, even with a once-a-week-on-average theatre habit, so what do I know?

I don’t like the Spice Girls. I used to hate all their Girl Power nonsense, especially as some of them espoused the fact that the Girl Power philosophy was epitomised by Margaret Thatcher.
(I have to say however that the love for the SGs on this Board has surprised me and is challenging my opinions somewhat.)

Related story: I was wildly uncool as a kid (no, surely not?!!) and I distinctly remember when a school friend asked me 'Have you heard Wannabe?' and I had NO CLUE what they were talking about. I probably heard that song months after it was released (my parents listened to the 'Oldies' station, and I for whatever reason never listened to my own radio). I was never that 'into' them as a band even when, yes I finally heard Wannabe. But I have to say they did make some utter pop classics which is why I'd go and see them (but as per the Spice Girls thread, didn't put that much effort in).

'Oh I'm not wasting my time on that, I'm ignoring it in favour of this, because clearly you people are idiots and I am far, far more intelligent' Ugh.

Don’t bother. If that’s how you feel either keep it to yourself or step aside and let someone who actually enjoys the job to take your place. If you don't already know it, may I recommend you all to Noel Coward's brilliant song "Why must the show go on?" Lol brilliant tonylocoI reproduce Mr Coward’s lyrics below... Why Must The Show Go On? Noël CowardThe world for some years Has been sodden with tears On behalf of the Acting profession, Each star playing a part Seems to expect the 'Purple Heart', It's unorthodox To be born in a box But it needn't become an obsession, Let's hope we have no worse to plague us Than two shows a night at Las Vegas. When I think of physicians And mathematicians Who don't earn a quarter the dough, When I look at the faces Of people in Macy's There's one thing I'm burning to know: Refrain 1 Why must the show go on? It can't be all that indispensable, To me it really isn't sensible On the whole To play a leading role While fighting those tears you can't control, Why kick up your legs When draining the dregs Of sorrow's bitter cup? Because you have read Some idiot has said, 'The Curtain must go up'! I'd like to know why a star takes bows Having just returned from burying her spouse. Brave boop-a-doopers, Go home and dry your tears, Gallant old troupers, You've bored us all for years And when you're so blue, Wet through And thoroughly woe-begone, Why must the show go on? Oh Mammy! Why must the show go on? Verse 2 We're asked to condole With each tremulous soul Who steps out to be loudly applauded, Stars on opening nights Sob when they see their names in lights, Though people who act As a matter of fact Are financially amply rewarded, It seems, while pursuing their calling, Their suffering's simply appalling! But butchers and bakers And candlestick makers Get little applause for their pains And when I think of miners And waiters in 'Diners' One query for ever remains: Refrain 2 Why must the show go on? The rule is surely not immutable, It might be wiser and more suitable Just to close If you are in the throes Of personal grief and private woes. Why stifle a sob While doing your job When, if you use your head, You'd go out and grab A comfortable cab And go right home to bed? Because you're not giving us much fun, This 'Laugh Clown Laugh' routine's been overdone, Hats off to Show Folks For smiling when they're blue But more comme-il-faut folks Are sick of smiling through, And if you're out cold, Too old And most of your teeth have gone, Why must the show go on? I sometimes wonder Why must the show go on? Refrain 3 Why must the show go on? Why not announce the closing night of it? The public seem to hate the sight of it, Dear, and so Why you should undergo This terrible strain we'll never know. We know that you're sad, We know that you've had A lot of storm and strife But is it quite fair To ask us to share Your dreary private life? We know you're trapped in a gilded cage But for Heaven's sake relax and be your age, Stop being gallant And don't be such a bore, Pack up your talent, There's always plenty more And if you lose hope Take dope And lock yourself in the John Why must the show go on? I'm merely asking Why must the show go on? Songwriters: Noel Coward / Noel Pierce Coward Why Must The Show Go On? lyrics © Warner/Chappell Music, Inc
