Do we assume the tour has been axed this year....?
See Nell Gwynn is out but was wondering about the platform-open air tour....a highlight always.
Guess its gone.

rubbish isn't it......Rylance Twelfth Night burst with sunlight alongside so many other great productions.Globe is not Regents Park Open Air Theatre.....all out of hand mainly from within theatre world. Think Emma is fine but mismatched here.....sorry to say that and have shifted rather since appointment in my perspective.
Bet you Greg D invites her to RSC to work her magic and then everyone can cheer the vision of RSC.....its a game.

Emma seems to be going full tilt with the whole plan for 5 years telescoped into the year ahead. So,Daniel Kramer only does Romeo and Juliet because of Emma..thats fine but lets not be deceived there are very many exciting directors who can anticipate working at the Globe in the future.Casting is OK,i Guess, not thrilling and it would be good to see some experienced Globe players in the arena.Personally I think it will be mix of styles and some alienation of many who have deep love of the place.Support Emma to a point but only when the work and the development of thinking are prime considerations...we seem too caught up in access issues....come on,its always been good access there...look at some of the earlier DVD's Henry 1V/V/....Shrew/Henry V111/Errors to witness the enthusiasm of the audience-all levels...all ages. Lets not get fooled by the notion that this was a tourist house now its a revo0lution....we can believe an invented mythology. What I do feel is required from Chief Exec urgently is a statement on planning for change and whether AD post is to be advertised or a guest invited to plan a complete season...sort of transition.Whatever time is getting short to get 2018 in place and this is a wonderful opportunity to build on past inc Emma and move ahead with belief and determination. This arena, the spirit of the place and the potential will overcome the politics of the immediate. So,please lets hear about plans to develop next year and cease lamenting.

maybe a season installation of fog.....under new AD. all directors must use fog for each play...real or artificial.Macbeth opens and then your guess as good as mine. Will bring lots of excited newcomers into building and get rid of seating differencials as we will all be shrouded in the stuff.Come to think about it ...thats my USP to apply.

Well.....it really time we heard buzzings from Bankside. With a Summer of Love sorted the incoming AD-whoever-should be starting to assemble teams for 2018 0peners.I sincerely hope that it will be AD rather than season director...needs continuity of planning for both spaces.Still hoping Eve Best gets the call or Lucy Bailey,Jonathon Munmby...all exciting directors with an understanding of Globe.Maybe get Mark Rylance to plan one interim season to get 'the lost'back into the building and ensure that the newcomers discover that the past here was every bit as thrilling.Certainly cant accept that no directors will touch a poison chalice...this house needs to be positive and move forward. Will be interesting to see if DVD's issued of last season.....thinking especially of the soundtrack for Imogen which must be tied up with so many artists labels etc.
Lets really hope for news soon....or at least an AD ad to look at revised job spec.

Press night tonight and high expectations...is it groundbreaking.....I seriously doubt that visuals will be comparable to film and that's why theatre remains the form it is......Ah well,we shall see.

just seen this in Stratford. It really is Shakespeare for Dummies and virtually nothing that is not created for children.Delighted that the company want the young in to enjoy but why no stimulation for adults. This is a wasted opportunity by creating a children's show but missing the devoted enthusiast.maybe I am wrong...tell me.

Was Bailey's TITUS trad or site specific........did Dromgoole never experiment......How did Globe To Globe ever happen before the new incumbent. Its time to accept the Globe is unique and has a responsibility to us all. Some of the best work in last 10 years hasd been staged here and some stinkers.Repertoire is vital and the exploration of ideas across seasons in both houses.Maybe Emma Rice will be happier in another one-she has brought revisions indeed but please do not devalue the work previously and yet to come.Quite frankly its not a poison chalice but-maybe-best job in theatre for the right person. All to enjoy as debate moves forward.

you need to stop the nonsense re cost of rigs etc..thats not really anything to do with all this.much more about the future direction of the work and clearly the need to reemphasise Shakespeare and his contemporaries.Rigs etc can vary with deals, discounts etc etc......do see beyond the statement and to the heart of the issue.

Really depressing dialogue ......my perspective after thoughts etc
Audiences are not stupid and can enjoy classical, contemporary, site specific and digital enhanced productions if they are made with care and understanding. Therefore OP can sit alongside Imogen in the same building .
Globe was always a revolutionary house and this discussion seems to place Rylance and ?Dromgoole in the trad camp. Not true the extensive touring, outreach and site specific projects were thrilling and won new audiences.I have been to Globe many times this year and many, many attendees are the same as before. There can be an artificial picture of new audiences.
Artistic Director must have total passion for Shakespeare and his contemporaries without doubt..to explore expertise not find a way to make fully accessible to everyone. We can't all enjoy Bach,Mozart,Montiverdi,Taverner,Oasis,Bowie,Smiths,Whitacre etc ...the beauty is we can choose and select to taste.Max Richters take on Vivaldi is genius yet we can still enjoy original side by side and without condemning those who prefer either version.
Our theatre right now is under the vocal influence of quite a close group.....you see the same names hovering around boards and exec offices.Do the exercise and you can work out how Emma Ruce got the job.The perspective of these people is important and should be heard but they should not be able to dictate how our wider theatre is developed and executed. A commitment to change whether it be casting, gender diversity, style and execution should respect the wide reasons why theatre is loved and is no ones property.
Emma Rice believes that amplified sound etc wins over young people...ok.,if it's good it's great but many young people visiting theatre love the costumes, the design ,the other world outside of their own experience.Take current Marvel films packing them in.....fantasy,costume,other worlds...Superman does not live in Hoxton and would not find much of an audience if he did.Emma has proved herself a storyteller of imagination and style in many ways....let's not believe it all has to be at street level for new audiences.
The appointing commiitte should resign as they have cause this awful mess by misunderstanding and not seeing how a vision was going to work out.Emma Rice is on a mission in the arts and it is mismatched with a venue that needs to play to all audiences...street,tourists,Theatre lovers, scholars and dreamers. They should go this week and let a new appointment panel seriously and without political correctness or desire to be in the zone make the decision on who..male or female...can take the place forward for everyone. My God....they must have the passion for Shakespeare or don't even bother to interview.Imagine the music director of CBSO saying,I don't like classical music or......National Gallery director saying...ok,boys out with Caravaggio and Titan lets convert the spaces for graffiti art.
A careful consideration will spot names out there, all of which will be under the microscope in next months.Of course, the freelance life may be much better than being tied to a house.Lucy Bailey threw us all into a gladiatorial arena with her Titus....was that not radical experimentation....? Eve Best,a fine actor and director whose passion could unite all wings of Shakespeare production, and it may be folly, sure it is,yet Michael Boyd is the man who revitalised RSC and created one of the finest ensembles in Stratford for years also with an ntelligence and understanding of form.
So there we are, thoughts of today but deeply concerned about next 12 months and if this continues we may face wreckage on Bankside from which it will takes years to recover.

Dream post. Michael Boyd. Ensemble. Could be fantastic
Had lot of thoughts this week and rather modified some of my opinions.will try to clarify soon .......Whatever Shakespeare's Globe must really get to grips with the immediate future and not tread water for the next year. Still think Dromgoole should caretake next season ......it's very confused.

The Board needs refreshing and a vow to carefully interview, understand, propose and support a new AD .....the sheer volume of response across the media proves that Shakespeare's Globe is the world leader for the plays and the passion clear. The theatre world response is predictable and to some extend phoney. Oh wonderful Emma.....now move on and get it right for the next 10 years with innovation, ground breaking work and international visits ....we were there before and be there again.I wishEmma had carried on with a few balanced compromises but so be it.Lets Go and get job ad out.

Odd that RSC grab a few headlines...today's Telegraph identifies their support.Where was this much earlier....? You can't be an AD with creative hands tied and that's for sure. eyes will look to succession and there are some potential innovators out there who may well be able to accept a challenge
Lucy Bailey who electric shocked the space with Titus
Eve Best. Declared passion for the place and good to have actor led troupe
Jonathan Munby. Fine work and Globe track record
All would ensure a no stand still place but .......the job must allow individual passions to be followed.
I think it will be near impossible for Emma to continue in the poisonous surround for another year. How can you dream dreams or create passionate work with the exit door awaiting. I would not be surprised if a few of the plays ahead are changed as time draws on.
Perhaps Dromgoole could return as interim AD to help steer through this huge crisis.

Many years ago Michael Bogdanov was sick and fed up of the RSC way of doing Shakespeare and the restrictions. He,with Michael Pennington set up the ESC.Radical and loved by so many-I hope Emma Rice sets in motion a radical alternative to every house that believes it has the right to own Shakespeare.Maybe its a further Kneehigh development but her mission has to continue.ESC challenged the RSC and made them sit up and take note.......its a fascinating study in territory and belonging of Shakespeare. If you are not one of us keep out.....

I think the board have responded to the negatives without seeing the long term potential as audiences and Emma Rice found a new way to develop the work.I hope Emma returns to Kneehigh and I hope the Globe will continue to experiment.Fear is a terrible force in theatre...this was an experiment that raised the roof with sheer joy this summer and brought new audiences. Was it really too much for sound and lighting....? Was it really too much to switch genders a little..? Globe was and will continue as major UK focus for Shakespeare and his contemporaries but I fear that new AD will have hands tied even before first interviews.
This seems to me a plot, engineered by some members who cannot trust ideas and vision.
It is sad news and I feel sorry for Emma who was on the cusp of change.

I do believe if WS had been at Imogen last night he would have been thrilled at his reaching all sections of audience.....wild cheers, delight, fear, anger, disbelief ...the ancient and the modern collide in this show and takes our possibilities with making work to a new level. It is as radical and experimental as Original Practices and as important.
This is Shakespeare being taken very seriously and certainly not a patronising yoof take.......Dunster is good choice as Associate Director and reflecting on the season it looks like Emma Rice had brought wonder to many people....some for whom the plays must have previously seemed rather remote.
Looking forward to announcement for 2017 and ,perhaps, news of transfers or reruns.

OK....so saw this last night. Its big and based on a star performance.
High production values but reminds me of Wolfit School of actor performance.Huge set pieces being monumental and Old Testament in imagery but nothing touches the heart.I enjoyed seeing the play again but why,oh why,do we have the local extras marching up and down or doing their best beggars...it really is quite pointless unless its in RSC mandate to use local extras as much as possible.
The curtain call further proves my point...actors come in from sides whilst the great Sher sweeps through the huge doors upstage.I think this is the kind of theatre that Brook et al fought against all those years ago and is the polar opposite of the Boyd ensemble.
So....its a statement of Gregory Doran's vision of RSC and will have many friends....for me,it seemed very remote from the more exciting and immediate Shakespeare's of our times. I used to feel the RSC had the forefront position in European Shakespeare making but now I feel we are very much in a back seat. It is a good production....it has a large cast, diverse cast,etc...etc..but,oh,to feel some heart once more at this theatre.

Of course this is a very valid opinion.i do think the Globe has to please many....a major audience who love the experience. The theatregoer ,the academic and the curious. Not easy.it has been a house of invention and experiment although perhaps regarded as more in the research tradition than theatre experiment.Emma Rice ...be not confused....is a vastly intelligent and creator of theatre. Her Kneehigh work has won acclaim across the world and, believe me,it is very demanding of its audiences.Quite revelatory in the case of Tristan and others. Her vision ,I feel sure, will bring a new and exciting dimension to the theatres and she is passionate about a sense of story which,of course,is the essence of the drama.
She does not direct Imogen this is Matthew Dunster who did a brilliant Faustus not long ago at this address.Lots of aerial work included.
Many of the comments surrounding Emma Rice were made at Brooks Dream......from anger to dismissal....it was not the revelation at first and took time to win the status it now has.The Globe has now,I feel, the potential to reach its most exciting phase yet but AD s take time to develop how their vision can work.Great last night to see and sense an atmosphere more akin to festival than theatre......you know, for some ,a night they will never ever forget.

Visually the show has a Donald Wolfit style........the grand old days of the Actor/manager.However that's from production pics and the actual show may well be very different.seeing in just prior to transfer so hoping for a little shorter evening than the current near four hours.Think Mr D is not directing next year ...certainly not in RST before Autumn .
