Despite having moved to Canada it looks like ex cast member Niall Sheehy was at the press launch. Would love for him to return, he was OUTSTANDING at Charing Cross. Don’t go overboard.

I watched the performance. Sadly one of my least favourite songs.

Got a brief moment for thoughts on tonight’s show.
Asmeret is good when she’s ‘on’ which isn’t all the time.
Joe Aaron Reid’s mic was either turned down or he’s having problems with his voice.
Amber has an amazing voice but I just think Effie is an unlikeable character. Glad I got to see her once more.
Last time I saw it, Jocasta was Lorell; tonight she was Deena. She was very good.
CC was good but also hard to hear at times.
As before, a mediocre show (book and especially lyrics) with great production values.
Very empty in the Dress Circle.

The sequel has been announced for September 2019.
Anyway, I saw it tonight and I was disappointed. A lot of style over substance (surely the motto of Stranger Things) and it was overly long. The were some very questionable/poor bits of direction which made it seem very stilted in parts.
A couple of tiny jumps but nothing more. Maybe I’m misremembering the mini-series but this did not have the same effect on me at all. I don’t think I will rewatch that though in case my memories get spoiled.
Oh well, I will see the sequel. This has proven the appetite for horror out there, just work on the actual scares, rather than the effects please, Hollywood.

I feel bad, because I started a topic asking for advice and haven’t replied to it since and if I’m honest, I forgot I started it because I asked the same on Facebook and I get notifications for that.
Apologies all.

You missed The Lion in Winter. Which also featured James Norton. Double-whammy. Indeed. And with Jo Lumley and Bobby Lindsay on top form too. I absolutely LOVED that production. Oh I saw that.

That is nothing like Poirot is described in the books (although neither was the Peter Ustinov version either) and it looks like some liberties have been taken with the plot too. Oh and Judi playing Judi again. Wendy Hiller was the definitive Princess Dragomiroff and Albert Finney has never been surpassed as Poirot. However I’ll go see it because I love me a star studded Aggie. The best, of course, being Evil Under The Sun! Have a sausage!

You sound just like my Mum. Wait, you’re not are you??! ;-) Well. I'm clearly the right age but unless you had a childhood like that depicted in 'Mommie Dearest' then no. No. Wire. Hangers. Ever! I highly doubt you’re the right age haha. Anyway, that’s a relief, I didn’t want a Theatre Board episode of Jeremy Kyle. Come on Jonnie!

Oi! Leave Debbie alone! If you're going to pick her out, at least drag Alexandra Burke into it. She's hardly a newcomer to dance. She also clearly knows how to play the reality TV game better than Debbie too. Anyhoo, this year is all about The Peacock. You sound just like my Mum. Wait, you’re not are you??! ;-)

I think Denise Van Outen gets the most criticism on that front because she outright denied it. If you don’t say anything I don’t mind particularly. The one I think is most likely to get that criticism this year is Aston.

I think simon will be first out. I do too. Sunday Brunch has a bit of a cult following though, so we’ll see if that translates into votes. If not, Ruth or Brian which is a shame because I like them both.

I agree BurlyBeaR. It’s lovely to begin to see her cheeky/naughty side whereas most people probably only think of her as Paul Daniels’s sidekick/assistant.

Really liked Shirley (but as I said it was a relief to see Len go). By week three she’ll be part of the furniture.
Debbie was great and I love that song. What a great start for her.
I liked a lot of the performers. I think Simon or Ruth might be first out. Ruth’s ITV fans might get her through the first vote.
Quite liked Davood. I didn’t enjoy Aston’s dance but that’s personal taste and I like him as a person.
AJ’s comment about Mollie’s singing was a bit awkward.

I’m glad I wasn’t misremembering Declan from last year. As I said I had an understudy on Monday and understood him a lot better. Maybe that’s partly why I struggled understanding what was going on last year.

I don't have an Uber account but I've used them with friends. Ive always found them pretty useless and borderline rude - regardless of where in the country I was. Whereas the vast majority of my black cab experiences have been fab.

made it look some kind of attempt to be a pin-up I know screen actors always end up doing fashion mag shoots (every slim 20something actor seems to end up modelling Hedy Slimane or Burberry), but I do generally lose a bit of respect for them when they do the legs-apart underwear or (if it's a young actress) sadly inevitable 'Night Porter' style hands-covering-nipples topless cover shots. I mean, fair enough if you're Pamela Anderson or Keanu or Burt Reynolds back in the day and your screen persona is based on your body, but otherwise it comes across as a bit tacky (insert Maggie Smith in Murder By Death line here!). It's not like it's something they have to do to 'get on' at that stage in their career. The early, embarrassing sexy undie shots used to be things actors wanted to forget once they got famous - now it's the other way around, serious actors stripping off (even more depressing when it's young women who considered themselves feminist role models). Part and parcel of that whole WH Smith Playboy pencil cases for schoolkids and the relentless selfie-culture body-consciousness, insecurity thing I suppose. Awww. I did my impression of that Maggie Smith line on Instagram and nobody got it! :-(

The simplest possible gender-swap without affecting anything In that case, I feel it's one that just goes on personal perspective. I did feel it added something new, you didn't d'James, so we simply differ on it . The Brexit line was just odd, and I bet it will be gone by any revival time. The swipe was just a bit odd, but didn't bother me. Guess the main thing was they left UNCOUPLED intact, phew. Apparently they did change UNCOUPLED a bit on the Saturday but nothing major.

Reminds me of a University open day I went to. Got chatting to two girls from somewhere in the South Girl 1: "Where are you from?" Girl 2: "Can't you tell? He's from Oop North!" Can't even remember which university this was, but still remember the snooty madam's tone of voice 30 years later. I had pretty much the exact reverse. It works both ways.

The whole CB number, with its CB radio slang. Stuff like "10-4 Smokey Bear" etc. Meant something in the 80s, probably baffling to most now. Not as cringingly embarrassing as the Brexit joke which made no sense whatsoever. Oh and that awful "swipe right" line in the song sung by the three girls. Yes I hated all that and even more so the Bjork reference. You don't need to reference the outside world (although I did think they should've replaced 'missing link' by 'Weakest Link' on the first tour). You can be relevant without the blatant/cheap references. I yearn for a day when Andrew and Arlene take a backseat and give all the material from throughout the years to someone with fresh eyes, to make the show the best it can be. Make it as 80s as possible and proud.

^Stand by for "Bend It Like The Girls." A bunch of senior Sikh ladies form a football team to raise money for a sofa at a local hospital. Music and Lyrics Barlow / Goodall. Main investor: Parsley. After every line there's a pause where another line could go. . . . and the missing lines show what the show is missing. Yo! (You've got to make sure the lyrics are hip and happening you see!)

I thought making it Momma brought a different slant to it. Evened up the sexes for sure - Starlight is a little too male in the leads list, and it brought women to the front far more strongly. Good change, IMHO. It was way too facile. The simplest possible gender-swap without affecting anything. A box ticked but nothing more. If you changed the gender of any of the other five main characters it would require real work. All this involved was changing 'he' to 'she.'

Does anyone know why they decided to switch Poppa to be female? Seems a bit of a random change - did they change anything to explain it, like anything that wouldn't have worked with Poppa? I do think it's a shame to lose the original all-male duet of 'Only You'. Though not as much as the absence of Rolling Stock bugs me. There was no absence of Rolling Stock. The gender swap of Poppa seemed very arbitrary - it makes no difference to the plot whether it's a male or female role. The duet was great though.
