The Matthew , I keep wondering the same thing, but - based on his strange behaviour - I think I've more or less concluded he is simply a terrible loser and an unstable person. I see no other explanation for this that would make even the slightest bit of sense. (Why nobody within his team pulls the occasional emergency brake is beyond me too.) But it is truly unsettling how the elections have highlighted such an enormous polarisation of the US electorate, that has made civil unrest a possibility, and even a feared probability. Whoever does win the coveted seat in the end will have a lot to think about and (hopefully) address. Still wouldn't surprise me if a drop of legal challenges is exchanged for a pardon

I'm hoping for another day when it looks like no further declarations.... then Penn and Georgia both come in together. On Tucker Carlson's Fox News shift

Should have been Dave getting the heave ho for his guff quiches and a doughnut that was a country mile from the rest. Think he'll be gone next week, Laura the week after. One good week and one in the final?

Employment Opportunity
The White House is in urgent need of someone to follow the President around and pick up the toys he keeps throwing out of his pram. This is a full time position of 40 hours per week with a further 16 hours on call at weekends. Prior experience of working with toddlers, the mentally impaired or bovine excrement will be an advantage, as will the ability to play dumb so as not to embarrass the poor dear.
Salary: $200 / hour. You'll earn it.
Benefits: None, because America.
Availability for immediate start is essential.
People with foreign-sounding names need not apply.
Not enough hours is it? Twenty four hour position this, Trump is tweeting through the night. Shared position this one

Went to bed early this morning (2:30am) quite depressed as learned that Ohio and North Carolina is going to remain Republican. Normally fall asleep with radio on because of my tinnitus (too many musicals!!!) But turned the radio off as tinnitus is more preferable than hearing buffoon is going back into the Oval office. Woke up depressed as I expected to see that Trump had reached the magical 270, learned he hadn't and perked up a bit when I found out it is still not a done deal, then saw how far trump was ahead in Pennsylvania*, mood fell again - then saw the possible paths being that Biden doesn't have to win Penn, the buffoon can have it, as long as Biden wins Arizona, Nevada, Michigan & Wisconsin**, which Biden is on course to win all four. *Biden is 400k votes behind in Pennsylvania, with a lot of votes to be counted in the Philadelphia area and postal votes, that is the long. Biden can easily win this state, that is the short. **Wisconsin is all but won. When Wisconsin went Blue was a big turning point in belief. When Michigan went blue and Biden had more votes was a magical thing. You could hear the roar coming across the Atlantic with that one

She was the worst this week over all. Fair result. Why didn't they get some blast chillers installed? We all knew that it was going to be a very hot few days. Better freezers would have been the right choice to make. The reason I won't try out for the show again until they stop setting people up to fail. Playing Devil’s Advocate: It is notable that some people did manage to do very well even with the heat. And the contestants also all knew it was going to be a very hot few days (sod’s law - anything that requires it to be cool in the tent will take place on a hot day). So the people who planned their cakes with that in mind succeeded, and the ones who didn’t did badly. (Apart from Laura, who probably would have been ok if she’d pushed the right button on the ice cream maker. But she seems to keep making simple mistakes under the intense pressure, so I suspect she’ll fo next week.) Yep bakers choice of cake played a big part in the result. I'm going to stop calling out my new favourite as they keep getting worst baker. Rowan, then Mark then Lottie all gone. (Come on Hermine but sssssshhhhh)

If she had shown any promise, they would have not been so keen to get shot of her. You also have to factor in that the producers want Anton to retire so engineering an early exit helps that plan. But at the end of the day she couldn't dance. And she does not have a warm personality. She was never going to succeed. Why do they keep picking him if they want him to retire? (Sorry, never watched it)

Was Candice prior to Ruby? Didn't want Ruby to get everything thrown at her for this 'role'? Who was initially first cast for this role?

I thought I would think the same about Lottie as most previous contributors. But she has won me round, very endearing personality, decent baker and loved her increasing levels of flirtiness with Mark. Disappointed Mark has gone this week but was his turn.
Yeah she is this years Ruby and she has mastered the Diana head on her shoulder plea when speaking with Paul Hollywood. Just like her lots.

I enjoyed this but mostly because of the actors, especially saskia reeves who really nailed it. It's all set for a 2nd series and I think the piece would benefit to a more conclusive ending. The narrative is very much the same old left wing rant and I can see why the Beeb don't get many Tory thumbs up. Has the Beeb done a positive right wing drama?
Again, the BBC trying to keep it as realistic as possible.... Trying to think of what the script to this would be? Boris gets outwitted by a twenty two year old from Manchester, who just wanted to feed starving children, who we'll call Marcus for the fourth time in one calendar year but gets the last laugh by blocking his knighthood maybe??

Jamie: Enthusiastic and attacked it. Not brilliant, but ok for a week 1 pop/disco cha cha. Probably handicapped by his trousers, I can't see how you could straighten and flex your knees properly in those. Caroline: Very theatrical. Looked very nervous, but danced nicely. Feet a bit turned out, but should be fixable. Not enough in hold to really judge that. Don't know why she was wearing Latin shoes. Max: I was a bit put off by Diane's clip in fringe and peculiar dress! Looked quite good, hold will need some work. I could have done with it being a bit more stalky and catlike. I think switching between ballroom and Argentine tango might have made it harder for him to know how his hold and feet should have been. Clara: Didn't need the disco section. I thought she was good at straightening her legs, and it looked good. I think enthusiasm overruled technique at some points, but that's not too much of a problem in week one. She was good at the disco bits, but didn't need them. Jacqui: Better than I thought she'd be, but I think with Anton in a foxtrot you just hold on and let him steer! She looked nervous, but hopefully will be better now she's got the first one out of the way. JJ: Proper waltz choreography (the literal choreography handshake was slightly cringey). I thought he did well, but need to tuck his pelvis under and bend his knees more so he can push off the standing leg and cover the floor a bit better. Amy had the best dress. Maisie: It was very good, but some footwork was a bit dodgy and it headed alarmingly towards club-style dancing once or twice (knees apart and bending quite low). She performs well too. I'd put her in slightly higher heels, which should get her weight forward and make her look lighter in her feet. Jason: I missed that it was a fusion, just thought he wasn't very good at some bits... The foxtrot looked nice, but he made the lifts look hard work. He seems lovely, but needs a better dance next week. Ranvir: Drama and skirt did a lot of the work. The choreography didn't look that exciting, and she looked a bit stiff. I don't think they should do paso in week one really. (And Giovanni's hair was weird.) Nicola: Endearing but a bit sloppy. Nice relaxed look from Nicola, but Katya looked manic alongside her and I think was counting for her and told her which foot to use at one point. I liked the lead-swapping, and the reversed costumes. Bill: Needs to work on technique, but fab at hitting the beats. Another one hampered by over-tight trousers. HRVY: Very, very good, but needed to point his toes. Lots of recognisable steps. Janette seemed to be dancing full throttle. Will be interesting to see his ballroom. You are Bruno and I claim my £5

And as a cornish man the pasty crimping was pretty appalling. Why didn't anyone just make a traditional meat, potato and turnip filling. I was thinking that, even a small twist on the tried and tested

Woz wondering why they don't have a labour gov for these politicos. So much more interesting dramatically as James Graham has shown us. Is it because they think, wrongly, that they have to depict labour guys as flat cap with a northern accent? So they like the sonorous tones of the actors such as Laurie. Or was the piece written for him anyway? Just musing. Tried to be realistic as much as possible, we only get Tory governments

Fiona Shaw's Irish, can she be a dame? Didn't Juliet Stevenson turn it down? Fiona Shaw has a CBE so I assumed she'd be qualified, but I am not an expert. Must be able to then. Geldof has one but thought it was a special award

Maureen Lipman. Give me strength. All those years of relentless self-promotion paying off. There’s loads of proper actors more deserving than her - Juliet Stevenson for example. Fiona Shaw. Loads more. A bit mean spirited, Jan. Fiona Shaw's Irish, can she be a dame? Didn't Juliet Stevenson turn it down?

Bit underwhelmed this week. It didn't quite rise to the occasion. And a twist is not a plait... It was Rowan. We all knew there was a tv personality there but, well... his baking wasn't up to it and he shouldn't have made week 3. I wasn't as distraught as I thought I would be. Some clever editing helped us all to be let down gently.

Yesterday I had my flu jab. And, today, I've just said goodbye to friendly young man on my doorstep (no not like that!) as I've signed up for a study run by Office of National Statistics. Lots of tests over the course of year. I had agreed to do it free but then a colleague pointed out that you can get 450 squid in vouchers. Yayyyy. I am Covid ready!

Another good episode. Rowan, perhaps correctly saved, as this years best contestant.
I have calculated if he has seven or eight weeks in the tent that will be enough to become a national treasure

They would rely on human track and trace, they would ignore the excellent NHS version at local level that finds nearly all contacts and spend ridiculous amounts of money reinventing the wheel to create a private version (which they then name NHS track and trace in the hope that people won’t notice). They would employ a serial business failure to run this system, pay their employees to sit at home doing virtually nothing and claim that the whole thing is ‘world beating’. In fact, it”s what they did anyway when the first app went down in flames because they gifted ‘ridiculous amounts of money’ to their cronies to develop it. A good government would have invested early in the Apple/Google version and bolstered existing public infrastructure. They did the opposite but, then again, they are probably the worst government of my lifetime (from the first Wilson administration onwards). The Apple/Google version doesn't allow the NHS to access the data to identify local hotspots, which given the vanishingly small percentage of people (10-20%) who bother to self-isolate when notified means the usefulness of the current app is close to zero. Which is why several other countries such as France tried to go the centralised route which is theory is better and approaches at least the South Korean gold standard where there is no app but the government permanently tracks using a centralised database every single mobile phone in the country, along with other location data such as where you have used a credit card for payment and so on. Why can't we learn from South Korea you all wail ? That's why. App take-up in Germany is one of the highest in the world - just over 20% ! Not much to learn there either. Is that true??

I hope people will adopt it. In the absence of a medical breakthrough contact-tracing is by far the most effective way of fighting this: if widely adopted it would be nearly as effective as a total lockdown with only a tiny fraction of the economic and social cost, and it costs people basically nothing at all to take part. But I expect stupidity will win out: too many people would rather stamp their feet and demand that someone else wave a magic wand and make the problem go away than lift a finger to help achieve that objective. This. Another pleading for us all to use. Anyone against downloading and using app?

Nobody is saying that. I don't think anyone has ever said that. Well how do you expect increased restrictions to work economically then? There is a reason the government haven't asked hospitality businesses and retailers to close again. Almost did, Sunak's last minute appeal gave them reprieve. For now. But luckily we have the strand of covid that comes out to play at 10pm

All we're facing is a few restrictions on our freedom, and we have absolutely no right to whine about it as if not being able to do every single thing we want means we're suffering more than any human has ever suffered. Just when I think the hyperbole on this forum can't get any worse. Your posts would be so much more persuasive if you didn't see the worst in everyone and make out every single person to be pretty much the equivalent of a major criminal because they dare to mention that there just might be adverse impacts of this pandemic other than deaths from COVID... Most people arent saying anything like "we are suffering more than any human has ever suffered", but people are raising perfectly legitimate concerns about mental health, missed diagnoses, poverty and other issues which cannot simply be sparked because of one virus. This is not at all "just a few restrictions on our freedom", for many people it is struggling even to keep their heads above water, staring hunger and homelessness in the face because their livelihoods have disappeared and they are struggling to find other jobs. That is so much more than "just a few restrictions", and reducing it to that shows a fundamental disregard for the true impact of this pandemic, just like you have ignored the broader impacts of WWII. The situations are not comparable. I might be wrong, but there is not a chance any of Matthew's comments were aimed at anybody suffering or affected by anything that you have mentioned
