One interesting aspect of bias is in the selection of stories that the BBC (and others) deem to constitute news. This is particularly the case in foreign news where the BBC devotes far more time and resources to USA politics and events than to similar news from EU countries. This is very true. But having read your post, I just asked myself if I care about Spanish politics (for example) and find I really don’t. There is something very odd with the US politics in that their system seems to have a lot of entertainment value. I was trying to work out if it was like this pre-Trump. Going to miss it when he is gone, something about a car crash and the need to view

Yes, Twitter isn't a wholly credible source but this is a fascinating (and alarming) thread of direct experience from Wednesday for those adamant the event was some sort of peaceful objection by disgruntled citizens exercising their right to protest. To believe this is anything but White supremacy in full force is misguided and to defend it is injudicious and deplorable. A good read that

Fwiw, I can put up a list tomorrow if anyone wants somewhere to start from, you can then prune and add accordingly. Yes please. What was the point of your stance today? Some strange positions taken, where were you going with them?

Imo, no news organisation and no journalists becasue the journalists have to report within the bounds accepted by the org and journos wouldn't be employed in the first place unless they agreed did, and the orgs themselves have become increasingly ideological - witness the BBC during Brexit. So it's a legit question that many struggle with. My answer has been (a) to forget the 24-hour news cycle and (b) to take a discerning approach to Twitter. I find it an outstanding tool once you find a groove and constantly prune and follow new recommendations. Looking at it now, it comprises public-facing academics, a bunch of less public-facing academics, think tank bods, ex-SPADS, independent writers with specialties. Great breadth of info and knowledge is there if you invest some time. You certinly don't want to agree wit them all, an echo chamber defeats the whole purpose. Strange cat you. Asking for trustworthy new source links and then telling us there aren't any. I'm probably the one on here who will agree with a fair bit of what you are saying on this subject. On Brexit I thought the BBC were very bad also. Were we on different sides of that debate?

kathryn , it's a waste of time, neither you nor anybody else will convince londonpostie or any other Trump supporter of the reality of the situation. It's amazing but many people got totally brainwashed and will never see the events of the past few months in the USA as they are. Not a "Trump supporter". Where do you get this stuff from. Where is a credible news source though?

Thought it may be useful to put in a couple of definitions of the word hero: A person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. A hero is a real person or a main fictional character who, in the face of danger, combats adversity through feats of ingenuity, courage or strength. Like other formerly solely gender-specific terms, hero is often used to refer to any gender, though heroine only refers to female. The original hero type of classical epics did such things for the sake of glory and honour. On the other hand, are post-classical and modern heroes, who perform great deeds or selfless acts for the common good instead of the classical goal of wealth, pride, and fame. The antonym of a hero is a villain. Other terms associated with the concept of a hero, may include "good guy" or "white hat". I think using the word hero may not have been the best idea for the clapping, but if it was going to be reintroduced then another phrase was going to have to be used. It will be different this time as at 8pm it will be dark and freezing! Not sure if it will affect morale. It may be a chance to see a few neighbours and engage in a group activity. I suspect a lot of people will be doing it just to save face though. I'm going to break ranks with a good few sentiments on here so far. I thought they were heroes pre-covid. Amazing job in really difficult and stressful circumstances. Just can't express my admiration for the job they do enough.

Nor do I buy that anyone who wanted a career in healthcare ‘knew what they were getting into’, that’s just a justification that people tell themselves so they don’t have to feel bad about other people’s suffering. No, it's not. I have every sympathy for people who have been redeployed into roles they don't normally do, but doctors and nurses chose to be doctors and nurses. They should get praise for hard work just as anyone else should in their chosen field, but there also has to be recognition that they elected to be in the medical profession - they weren't conscripted. There is a difference between doing your job and going above and beyond the call of duty. No doubt many medical professionals have done the latter, but it is also what they are trained for so there is at least an element of it that is no different from anyone else working a difficult job I dont expect anyone to feel sorry for me because of the long hours I work in a very draining job because I chose that career. No one gets a free pass out of that. I'd much rather have support to ease my burden than faint praise that doesn't mean anything. And that is precisely the point of the rest of my post - the focus should be on proper assistance, not empty plaudits of heroism that ultimately don't help the people concerned where they need it most. I agree with your last sentence but I don't think you are explaining it very well.

Any conspiracy theory that would require more than a handful of people is obvious nonsense. If it involves any more than that you're basically claiming that of all the people involved every single one is permanently thinking "My story would be worth a fortune to the media but I have all the money I could ever possibly need and I don't want any more". Mind, not sure how much cover up was needed, but nobody thinks it's Lee Harvey Oswald surely

Took delivery of a parcel at the weekend. It was a present from my boss and contained alcohol. Delivery driver wanted my date of birth?? Said I'm not happy giving you that information and he was going to take the parcel away. Despite my pleas I have very definitely hit middle age and my boyish good looks have long since departed he wouldn't deliver my parcel and insisted on a date of birth. I gave him 23 April 1564 as a date to prove I was over eighteen years old and he seemed quite happy I was born on the same day as William Shakespeare.

That is one good thing about being British. We do have the ability to take the Mickey on ourselves and a bit of humour goes a long way at the moment! Oddly enough it also got me to go on YouTube and look at the original ‘Do They Know It Is Christmas’ one of the greatest acts of altruism at the time and also a brilliant song. One of my favourite Christmas songs. It also got me thinking about George Michael a brilliant selfless man, who gave his millions away to charity, especially to Childline. I always remember a phone call to LBC when George sadly died, from a man who run a homeless hostel upset, because George would come along to the hostel and help out anonymously, stand there for 3 hours peeling potatoes, however George wanted absolutely no publicity over it. Hence why it never came out until he sadly died. But back to the song and it is absolutely hilarious. George Michael gave to Hillsborough charities a few times. Good egg him. Back to the song, what was the one line changed from the original version?

Hi people. Just want to say that if anyone is feeling really sh*tty over Xmas, on their own or cheesed off whatever, then DM me. I’m happy to chat and I will be around, not entertaining or cavorting or anything. I won’t be on my own myself ( he is contractually obliged to stay with me 😂 ) but would be happy to listen, chat or email or FaceTime even! Don’t suffer in silence. I’m not on my own, I have my mum and her dog. Then back home got my 2 cats. But really to say how sweet is that, a lovely selfless altruistic act.

More generally, some theatre Twitter is coming across quite badly today, with its conspiracy-theorising and Allison Pearson-like desire to carry on as if covid wasn't killing people. I'm a hairy old Lefty but I don't think Tories want to see theatre die any more than the Centrists (which is where I think most theatremakers sit) and Left do. I think deep down people love to be the victim: if life isn't smooth and tranquil then there must be someone they can hold accountable for their woes. It can't ever be "sh*t happens"; there must be a perfect solution and if it isn't given to them then that has to be because someone is maliciously withholding it.
If there was a solution to this that would allow businesses to carry on as normal without resulting in many millions of deaths then someone would have found it. There's no question that many governments have made mistakes while trying to navigate their way through an unprecedented situation, but one thing we can be absolutely certain of is that there will never be a time when historians look back on 2020 and say "Those poor fools. If only they'd listened to the self-appointed experts on social media".
I think history will be harsher. I think she'll say 'well you bloody voted for him three month earlier'.

Wasn't sorry to see that couple leave. You need to be more of an all rounder to be considered a potential winner. Which means doing the fast, fun dances as well as the slower in-hold numbers. It means mastering Latin and Ballroom. It also means having some entertainment skills beyond looking nice in hold. There are only two dancers with the technical ability to be worthy of the win. And I don't like one of them for a range of reasons. Who is the other one?

Another thing I was going to say on the hope thing Christmas is bringing this year. We had the local roundtable Father Christmas on a sleigh come around on Saturday night. Loads of people out, not just on the doorsteps as Santa passes. Maybe two hundred out following.
They weren't knocking on doors this year for donations but did have socially distanced buckets on a stick Dick Whittington style if you did want to stick a few bob in the bucket.
