John Humphries since leaving Radio 4, has sort of became Laurence Fox’s grandfather with a couple of thing he has said. Mastermind is a sort of programme you don’t want someone with a bubbly personality. Victoria Coran Mitchell has that in bundles. One of my favourite programmes is The Chase, love Bradley and I love all 6x Chasers. Anyway so I watched the first 2 programmes of the Paul Sinha television show, which is unfortunately quite dreadful, never like quiz shows on television anyway, tells something of yourself if you do well! Anyway sometimes I also like a Question of Sport and have to say it looks awfully dated now and needs a refresh, with new presenter and 2 new captains. So I was thinking my favourite Chaser that being Shaun Wallace would make a brilliant host. And former champion. Nice idea if he can read questions clearly

I like Humphreys, think he has done well.
I like the sound of Kirsty Young. I first thought of Fiona Bruce and could only exclaim out loud, 'oh no'.
My quiz team plays against 2016 champion Alan Heath's team. Beat them for the first time this week. He is very good, I guess being a Mastermind champion he wants a more traditional set of questions as opposed to more popular culture but still a feather in the cap

I enjoyed this but mostly because of the actors, especially saskia reeves who really nailed it. It's all set for a 2nd series and I think the piece would benefit to a more conclusive ending. The narrative is very much the same old left wing rant and I can see why the Beeb don't get many Tory thumbs up. Has the Beeb done a positive right wing drama?
Again, the BBC trying to keep it as realistic as possible.... Trying to think of what the script to this would be? Boris gets outwitted by a twenty two year old from Manchester, who just wanted to feed starving children, who we'll call Marcus for the fourth time in one calendar year but gets the last laugh by blocking his knighthood maybe?? A good bump of the thread. Going to watch White Crow at the weekend. Noticed a previous post of mine also. Four times in the calendar year and five times in a twelve month period then??

The absolute gall of Johnson saying he did "everything he could" and that he's "sorry". Not sorry enough to resign apparently. If this is his best, I dread to think what his worst would be. This. Imagine having voted for them

Are we really saying people will want to get Covid? There are bound to be a few deniers who refuse to believe that bad things can happen to them too. Can't let those Darwin Awards go to waste.
It's more likely that people will try to fake it and end up being prosecuted for fraud when it turns out they're not smart enough to outwit a judicial system that has seen it all before.
This is where I am

I think there wil be enough people willing to get their lives back that businesses can open and do well. Agreed - and really, what's the alternative? Keep closed permanently? It's already dragged on for far too long. Once the vaccinations are rolled out to a reasonable extent and the pressure on the NHS is eased, there's really no excuse for carrying on with lockdowns and closures. There has to be a point where we simply say "This is as good as it's going to get, time to get on with it". I think your thinking is right, but you may be a month or six weeks too early

Watching the joy of inauguration of Potus 46 and stark contrast watching Trump’s final engagement, that no one significant turned up, only a few sycophants. Okay he had a military send off with bands and guns, it was all pomp and no circumstance. A dejected Trump who has clearly checked out boarded Air Force One, a soon to be successfully impeached ex president will follow. Even looking at George Bush Jr, came across as a statesman. If you told me a year ago that Trump would lose the election, I would have thought you mad, especially against Biden who isn’t the best communicator, not as good as Obama, Clinton or indeed Trump. Obviously Trump is going to blame the “Chinese Virus,” that isn’t the reason he lost the election, the reason he lost was how he handled Covid. I was watching someone who was pro Trump, with the flag hanging upside down on the BBC. This person more likely would have no health insurance or if they have weak health insurance, so why would someone like that back Trump and see him as the saviour? Mind, the timing of My Way finishing as the plane went down the run way and into the sky was superb. If he spent his last few weeks calculating this instead of dealing with the covid crisis then it was time well spent

Have you been watching Rick Stein's Cornwall, alece10 and sfsusan ? It's more of a travelogue than cookery show, but it was saffrons buns yesterday. Thanks for that I will check it out. I do love saffron cake. My treat once a year when my niece comes to visit from Cornwall. Rick Stein is not that well liked in Cornwall though as he has bought so many shops and businesses in Padstow which are very "high end" and made the village very upmarket meaning the locals can't afford to buy property there. Remember looking at the menu once outside one of his restaurants and the prices made my eyes water, and I live in London so used to high prices. However his fish and chip shop on the harbour is great and best fish and chips I've ever had. The locals call Padstow "Padstein". Ricks fish and chips, just down from the deli? I thought they were overpriced and under whelming. Now the fish and chips at Whitby harbour...

Not to mansplain but you know its a biopic, written by Vallelonga's son in consultation with Don Shirely's estate, right? I was able to watch it without any sort of whiterage and enjoy it for what I felt it was, an interesting interpretation and dramatisation of events I knew nothing about, rather than any sort of journey of racial resolution. Of course people are entirely able to watch it themselves and make their own minds up though. Out of interest, did you see Blindspotting? I know it's a biopic but that doesn't mean the story hasn't been dramatised/embellished or doesn't use shorthand to get points across and when the movie portrays Langella as virulently racist as it does then I don't buy his redemption and it treats the topic of racism as the problem of individuals rather than as a systemic and deeply rooted issue of American society which as I said I found reductionist. I also don't know how far I trust the film's accuracy in portraying their relationship, it seemed heavily biased towards Langella's account and Shirley's family were disapproving of the portrayal and claimed that they did not have a long-lasting friendship beyond their working relationship. To me the film just felt more like a feel good film for white people to pat themselves on the back for no longer being as racist as people were back then in a "see how far we've come" kind of way and which leant into tired white saviour tropes. I don't think I've ever seen a black person praise this film beyond its performances which were its most redeeming feature. As for Blindspotting, yes I did see and thoroughly enjoyed it though I don't think it was by any means perfect. I really liked One Night in Miami, four really big personalities and leaders of black civil rights. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall that night. Love to know what was discussed. I always thought Malcolm X would have been the dominant personality in the room but that didn't come across in the film

I really enjoyed The Queens Gambit considering it wouldnt normally be my choice of viewing but it was so well acted. I also really enjoyed a series about an orthadox Jewish woman who escaped her husband and went to Germany. I cant think of the name of the series at the moment but it was superb. Want to see Chernobyl -is it on Netflix? I can only seem to find it on Amazon and you have to pay extra for it Unorthodox is the series - a difficult watch at points but I thought it was brilliant. Chernobyl is exceptional. I'm binging The Queen's Gambit this weekend, and watching One Night in Miami tonight I think. Yep The Queens Gambit is really good. Worthy of it's IMDB 8.7 rating

Great Designs last night was a good one - though not without tension, particularly as their build schedule overran into March 2020! But it all came out ok in the end. Use of spoiler needed there kathryn

One interesting aspect of bias is in the selection of stories that the BBC (and others) deem to constitute news. This is particularly the case in foreign news where the BBC devotes far more time and resources to USA politics and events than to similar news from EU countries. I'd agree with that. While trying to ignore the massive amount of BBC coverage the latest US election got (and the previous one, and the one before that, etc.) I found myself wondering how much coverage the major US news channels give to British elections. I suspect it's almost certainly an awful lot less, if any at all! CNN regularly mentions the UK and Ireland in regard to covid. Last week or so I have been watching CNN and surprised me how much UK news there is. BUt certainly much less than UK coverage of the States

You mean Tony Blair's recommendation about vaccination that is now goverment policy. Ditto Marcus Rashford several times over.
Are Blair and Rashford comparable?

Toby Young has been wrong every step of the way yet still he gets put up as a lockdown sceptic as if his views should still be considered as useful as medical experts. That's just balance to giving airtime to Tony Blair as if he's an expert in vaccination. Every single example of supposed bias you give is from your own left-wing viewpoint, which doesn't add any weight to your argument. Isn't left wing view point Tony Bair is centre right and Toby Young off the scale quite ring wing?
