And Jo Davies did a brilliant, well thought out Ruddigore for opera North. Yep, Jack Point - a great character - will he expire at the end I wonder.

Any mention of who is playing Jack Point in Yeomen - please let it not be a him off t'telly casting.Y eomen does contain some wonderful music and i hope they bring out the darkness. I didn't see ENO's Iolanthe or Pinafore but I sufferred, oh and i did suffer, their Pirates. I was lucky to see the legendary, truly inspired Patience, and the jaw dropping Ida, and of course the gorgeous Mikado.

can you imagine being the stooge, who has to sit there every night for thirty seconds of humiliation. still, hopefully they are paid, and it is acting of sorts.

let's not forget Michael Crawford took things to a high art with Barnum. I guess it's all part of it.

I did a few days crewing on the Manchester pre london run and the cast were amazing, Judi d, John Mills, Christopher Gable, marti webb - i'll always remember Judi D in a little push along car, and lines such as 'deeply bereft of a bed ridden father'. It changed every night and i never saw how it ended uo in London, but i rather loved it. some good numbers but maybe all a bit twee.

Certainly Cock seems a troubled production just now....

Much ado, on tv at least, was a bit hard to cope with. I'm sure Cicely berry would have had something to say, and ouch, the design, so flamboyantly unnecessary, adding nothing but colourful distraction

Sadly the musical seems a shadow of the dark and twisted thing it could be. Imagine if if really went for the macabre. warm and loving but still macabre.

To appreciate how good the Oliviers were just watch All Star Musicals that was on before. After the subtle Our Time number in the Oliviers Poppins, Eponine, and Phantom and everyone else hand jiving to Hairspray was indeed a grim, tacky, nasty sight.

It is certainly the most convenient car park, but is desperately slow to unload after a packed show, and unfortunately the roads around the lowry are a mass of cones. Get there early and have a meal. The traffic really is appalling a the moment, but the show, of course, is worth it. The roads simply can't cope with the traffic.

I always feel a little dissatisfied with the format, and lack of valuable critical judgement.and all rather thrown away in the last few minutes.

sill thinking about this production that i saw a few nights ago. I did see it when it first came to Manchester twelve years ago (!). There are some great moments, where it really does look like a classical painting, but there is a lot of business and so much clutter with the set. The various staircases that form the Maser in the House setting, are they the same pieces redressed for the barricades. I assumed that the point of this production was that it was simpler to tour, but heck there's a lot of set involved. I wonder how many trucks this takes to move round. Maybe the revolve was just too complicated. i do miss the deceptive economic theatricality of the original. This one is so full of 'stuff'.

I've seen many of these Sydney outdoor productions and there's always the game of wondering how they are going o shoehorn in the fireworks, and the always do. Feels like the Crummles in Nicholas Nickleby always putting in their prop water pump, whatever the production.

I'd like to see the show report from the performance at the Lowry tonight. Just as I was marvelling at how hey manage to pack up and set up such an epic show in such a short time, the show ground to a halt. I saw a red torch behind the barricade after the second big barricade scene, and someone muttering on stage, then the orchestra stopped and the safety curtain came down. A friendly voice announced a couple of times that they would continue, and eventually they did, with not a barricade to be seen. Sadly the atmosphere disappeared with it, and everything was definitely off kilter after that. Odd lights coming on here and there, but I hope no one had been hurt in any sort of accident. In a way I wished they stopped the performance then. In great shape, packed with business, but I still rather hate the whole of the wedding scene. very tacky.

Thank you for the mention of Where stallions Run, and no, it wasn't on the DVD but i found the soft focus, misty pastoral clip on youtube. I'd still like to see a stage version to see if perhaps the 'villian' had a more satisfying ending other than losing his wig, Perhaps some sexual hypocrisy would be involved. Yep the film just sort of peters out really. One hoped the Chicken ranch would have come back in all it's glory. I wonder if the stage was a little more raunchy, though burt in his boxers was pleasant enough. and Dolly is pretty amazing.

I would of course be the first to rush up on stage to collect an Oscar should i get nominated, but one can't help feeling that today the whole circus is somewhat misplaced.

yep Patricia Routledge was tremendous in that original production - her exasperation being almost painful. and the late Nicky henson being impossible flexible and athletic as he fell down those stairs. It was utter joy, but it will be interesting to see if Play Hoes wrong has killed this particular play.

somewhat late catching up with this, and rather enjoyed it, even if therer was a lot of lyric illustrating 'business' but no matter. And there#s still an awkwardness with movies letting people burst into song and dance without trying to find a reason, but it was ever thus. I did think this rather special though. a question - so Anita tells Valentina that Maria has been shot, but Valentina doesn't even register that Maria is alive in that final scene - maybe i missed something. That will give me a good excuse to watch it again,

Does anyone know if the main cast, or even the Carnak itself, saw the actual Nile. I suspect much of the river scenes was second unit and the rest sophisticated cG/green screen, I rather enjoyed it but want to replay the last scene on the boat just to work things out again.

I don't know how to process these awful events, and on a very trivial level, I am involved with a Russian co production. Who knows what will happen there now. A few years ago I was a guest of honour at a concert of tchaikovsky music at his house in Klin. A great honour slightly ruined by the host saying that Putin had sat in my very chair a week before.
