So what do people think about Stephen Spielberg having successfully acquired the film rights to this after years of trying? Casting Call gone out for a co-pro between Spielberg and Tony Kushner: www.playbill.com/article/steven-spielberg-and-tony-kushner-west-side-story-remake-issues-casting-callPersonally, theres something about 40-70s recordings of musicals that I dont like the sound of, production techniques have changed etc. So I'm quite looking forward to hearing a cleaner, modern recording of the soundtrack!

I've already seen people begging to have Lin-Manuel Miranda cast as Bernardo, like the casting call doesn't explicitly call for 15-25 year olds and the dude isn't nearly 40... I'm quite interested in the fact Tony Kushner's been brought on board for the book. It's always been the weakest part of both the film and the stage show for me (and not because of the made-up slang either) so although I can see people not liking it much, I for one would welcome a serious overhaul. Keep the most charming bits, but flesh out the rest properly. (Also, before any of the stronger reactions arrive, may I remind everyone that a movie remake does not cause the original to cease to exist, and it will always be available for you to watch. Just think of this as a revival. )

Arthur Laurents's book was of its time. It did the job it was supposed to do - meaning it worked. I hope Kushner doesn't mess too much with it.

Is Spielberg directing or just producing the film? He's not great at theatrical stuff and I fear it could end up like Dickie Attenborough's A Chorus Line unless he gets someone like Matthew Bourne in to choreograph/co-direct.

^Dance experience a plus?? Eh? You what? Surely that should read Dance experience A+.? To be fair, I have no dance experience at all, and I was once in a very, very bad undergraduate production of 'West Side Story'. I played Officer Krupke. Very badly. I was not required to dance.

Learnt a little known fact about West Side Story last night, for the fact keepers and Bernstein experts:
Detailed in the Royal Opera House Bernstein Centenary Ballet, for anyone familiar with Bernstein's 'Chichester Psalms', when he was approached with the commission to write the Chichester Psalms, he was part way through an unsuccessful attempt to write a musical. As the project came in, a huge amount of ideas and sketches from the musical became the basis for much of the commission. It was in fact West Side Story he was trying to write, so as such Chichester Psalms features songs and ideas cut from WSS!

Ansel Elgort has been cast as Tony in the Movie.
Never heard him sing but I liked him in Baby Driver.

I’m fine with casting Ansel. He can act & has a good singing voice. My main concern is that they get the casting for Maria & Anita right; they need to be authentic.
Anyone else hoping they find a way to give Rita Moreno some kind of small role in this too?

Rita could easily play Doc!

I’m not sure what I think. I’m sure he’ll be fine, but it’s not what I originally think when I think ‘Tony’

The best news is no Ben Platt for Tony. I like the guy, but those rumours filled me with dread.

I only know Ariana from SYTYCD. I'm glad they're not casting big names (okay, Ansel is a name, but still).

Okay I'm not mad at the ladies. Cautiously optimistic. Who is this David Alvarez - if he's the guy I'm finding on youtube I don't know what the casting people were on.

I've done my research, he was one of the original Broadway Billy Elliott's. He won the Tony alongside the two others. He then served two and a half years in the military, before returning to Broadway as a Swing in On the Town!

Rachel as Maria is really nice casting & i’m saying that only on how much I love that video of her singing ‘Shallow’ in an empty auditorium.
Still not completely sold on Ansel but i’m definitely gonna give this a fair shot because the rest of the casting is pretty great.
