I absolutely adore opera, I'm actually going to the Royal Opera House tonight to see 'Tosca' to see Maria Guleghina.
The best opportunities to see opera are Covent Garden (Royal opera house), WNO, ENO, Glyndeboure and Opera North.
I would never ever recommend Ellen Kent to anyone with an interest in opera: cheap values and gimmicks (you always see them with "featuring a magnificent golden eagle" or something along those lines on the posters. Bottom line, don't do it!
Just off the top of my head here are some good first time operas I'd recommend: Tosca - Puccini Madama Butterfly - Puccini La Boheme - Puccini The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflote) - Mozart La Traviata - Verdi Cosi Fan Tutte - Mozart The Marriage of Figaro - Mozart The Barber of Seville - Rossini L'elisir D'amore - Donizetti
My particular areas of interest are bel canto operas, as well as work from the core Italian dramatic period. I like everything apart from baroque.

first time I've seen the Richard Eyre production which still looks good despite being on it's 93rd revival. Glad to hear you enjoyed the performance. I for one hate this production, it's so tired and shabby.

It was all a bit "phantom by numbers" for me, which was a shame. Saturday night in the west end I expect everyone to be on it 100%. Apart from all that it still looks beautiful. The costumes look like they were made yesterday. I agree actually, I've seen the show a few times before and I felt the impression was rather muted on me this time. I wish Earl Carpenter would return as Phantom.

It's nice to be here on the new forum. I'm going to dedicate my first post to one of my favourite shows in the West End.
I saw the show last Thursday Matinee (21st January 2016) I saw all the main cast except an understudy for Madame Giry who was very good.
Just a couple of questions for people who've seen the show recently. Has anyone else noticed that at the end of 'The Music of the Night' JOJ doesn't pick up Christine and carry her to the boat? Also, JOJ didn't vanish through the trapdoor in the floor at the end of 'Why so Silent?'. Has this been redirected at all?
