Not the best Autumn for Rishi and just when you thought it couldn't get worse James cleverly delivers an alternative Christmas message.

Major revival heading to Chichester Festival Theatre in 2024, before transferring to the west end! Cameron Mackintosh to produce! Is this different to the Leeds playhouse production?

I was also at the Barbican and thought it was mostly great, I would of liked it to be a bit longer and explore the issues in more depth.
Carey Mulligan wax fantastic.

theatreloverlondon can i ask what is it about the West End that appeals? I find it expensive, overhyped and sometimes a misplaced star vehicle.

If he resigned, would 10 ish years of freelance work be a nice break before becoming the big cheese at NT or RSC?

This was a year of spectacular highs and then some miserable lows. Moving forward, I'll be taking a break from plays and I'll be cautious around musicals
Im interested to see what happens at the Donmar, will we be getting more musicals?
I have very little booked for next year, hopefully the Coronet, Wiltons, LSO and Sadlers Wells will offer me some lovely gems.

Ive always loved PO. i find its score beautifully hynoptic, yup the book is slow but also mightily ambitious.
I like the 2017 changes as it really does focus you on the binary views of the protagonists.
The programme essay by Weidman is well worth reading.
At the MCF from the middle of row C you miss most of the projections and if a character sits or kneels then forget it. Didnt they think to raise the stage?
A small proportion of the cast have poor diction. The mix of the band is poor / muddled, i would of like to picked out individual instruments.
The direction is not particularly focussed or inspiring. The set is glossy but nothing more.
Tree and Pretty Lady stood out as highlights. Im going back next month and im sitting on the front row hopefully I'll be able to see it all and enjoy it more.

Not the best trailer but interesting that one of the kids knocks Olivers bowl onto the floor and so he asks for more. I've never seen that before

I still have Sunset to go before 2023 is up! Groundhog Day Next to Normal Operation Mincemeat The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Two Strangers (Three of these I've seen previously...but loved them; Guys and Dolls is an honorable mention for the production design; just not my favourite musical) ...How did I forget Standing at the Sky's Edge??? I keep a spreadsheet so i can 'remember'

Streetcar Named Desire, Next to Normal, Sunset Boulevard, Sondheim's Old Friends and Crazy For You. It's the odd year in which musical theatre was much stronger than plays IMHO. im not the biggest 'play person' but the ones have seen this year were dreadful

I'd forgotten they inserted the word New into the title, years ahead of Tony Blair ... After Wolverhampton said no, they had a few seasons at the Savoy before co productions with Scottish opera. Pics of our Alfie from the 93 tour - enjoy!

I was at last night’s performance which due to illness was labelled as a concert and lasted just over an hour*. Wow. What an amazing concert! The cast of 5 acted, sung and played their socks off.
I don’t know the piece so I can’t comment on what was cut but the Christmas trench scene was hauntingly beautiful as was Keep the home fires burning. Loved the drill Sargent and the date when all wars will be settled landed like a kick in the teeth, especially as last yesterday was Hanukah.
My friend complained about the quality of music making but I thought this was a strength. This piece shouldn’t sound nice.
Top marks from me.
*Southwark offered options of a ticket transfer, full refund or see the concert for half price – amazing customer service.

@sohoplace Marvelous, As you like it & little Big things all worked really well.
Candide at the MCF was truly excellent. Im not sure why these stagings worked, fast faced shows, actors moved a lot and not to fancy staging?
For the negative I give you the current west end Cabaret.
Wasnt Happy Days at the royal exchange staged on a revolving hill?
I generally like it as a concept and lets not forget some directors and designers in traditonal theatres only play to the front of the theatre and in the central block!
A friend watched some ghastly wagner and whenever a singer turned then you couldnt hear them - sounds a blessing to me.

Opera North’s Kiss Me Kate and Into The Woods were also very good. I forgot he directed Woods, i saw it the day after the Brexit vote so i was sadly distracted. From what i remember it was a great and fresh retelling of the story.

Fascinating fact about the zoo, i never knew that.
D'oyly Carte, well G&S went out of fashion. Brum pulled their funding, they went to Wolverhampton for a season but funding wasnt secure. Then its main backer (the cheif exec of an airline loved G&S) got bored of bank rolling them and so stopped funding them also. I did see a handful of their productions and they served as a great introduction to opera for me, back in the day i loved Mikado, Fledermaus and Pinafore. The latter had a young Alfie Boe in, i wonder what happened to him ...

Based on Night Music I can't wait for this.
To hear that fabulous score played by a proper orchestra is going to be fab.
From Oliver to MFL Brining is really going for the ye olde English style!

Personally, to solve the RST transfer problem (both to London and elsewhere) I’d like them to convert the RST back to a proscenium stage - this can easily be done as the option was designed in when the new RST was built. The thrust stage there has hindered transfers and killed the art of RSC stage design stone dead, I can’t think of a single notable Shakespeare design that’s come from the RST since it was reconfigured. Second best as has been noted would be a residency at the Bridge in thrust stage configuration. Interesting to hear that the RST could be converted back. I’d assumed this wasn’t possible without an expensive refurb and closing for months. I could be wrong but im sure the auditorium was converted to be something more proscenium and commercial for Boy in the dress
