I am one of those who found this had a ridiculously long setup - even though watching shots of 60s LA kept me mindlessly entertained during those uneventful first 2 hours. However I’ve done some research into the Manson Family and Sharon Tate since watching the film and can’t help feeling I’d have had a completely different experience had I known a bit about those events beforehand. Especially as the film opts for such an alternate reality. Did others on here have a grasp of that history before going into the cinema?

I think people enjoy bashing him less because he has done well and more to do with the reputation of quite an unpleasant fellow he has become with success. However, I guess we don’t know what it’s like to be him and it might be quite unpleasant Sounds as if you speak from experience betty? I’ve got friends and former colleagues at the NT and in TV in LA who would attest to this. And I personally found him obnoxious during Into The Woods too. But the worst story I heard was from BA cabin crew. Of all the JC stories I’ve heard they are 100% negative. Much like Cilla, he knows how to put on a good public persona when needs be.

Weirdly, I would recognise everybody in missthelma 's post... except Marc Elliott... I’d only recognise him as the ex-boyfriend of my flatmate..

“She is returning to the show alongside her son Ciarán Bowling who she was pregnant with whilst playing Fantine in the 1996 cast. Les Misérables has been a real family affair…her sister Lizzy Renihan was in the show with her in the early 90s and her husband Daniel Bowling was Music Supervisor and Musical Director for Les Misérables for many years.”
Her programme bio is lovely - such a personal connection to the show.
I think the only time I saw her was as Giulietta in the original Aspects Run, and she was great.

Does anyone recall a production of The Boyfriend in one of the theatres along the Strand very early 80s? I cant find anything but I seem to to remember being taken to see it on one of my visits to London when I was living overseas. Or have I got it mixed up with possibly Thoroughly Modern Millie? The 1984 Cameron Mackintosh revival at The Albery? With a pre-Phantom Rosie Ashe?

She was mesmerising in The Band’s Visit so I think it’s a great new direction for the show. Hope that Matt Doyle rumour is true now also.

I’m curious to hear what people’s reactions were a year on, and given the teaser trailer (and D23 news).

Judging by Gay Twitter you may as well rename this thread - “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie”.

Maybe they'll make Jessie Mueller go strawberry blonde? It's very sweet of people to say that this production 'needs' any of the West End principles, but I really don't see it that way. They were all fantastic, but I don't think anyone was irreplaceable. Joanne always works well with a diva, or someone with a big personality, it doesn't have to be Lupone. If the producers are confident in the concept and the production (which I think they can be) then they don't need to start messing around with Equity deals. Did I miss this casting announcement? The BWW board was getting all worked up and convinced it was Katrina Lenk last time I checked, but that seemed to be entirely based on nothing. JM would be a great choice. Though I was hoping for a kick ass Lena Hall version if I’m honest.

John Napier is an utter genius. I wish people could still afford his work and would beg him to design on the scale of TIME, LES MIS, CATS and STARLIGHT EXPRESS again for the West End (what a CV!)- though I know he still designs, nothing has matched the scale of those landmark shows. Only Lord of the Rings has come close to the spectacle of these shows. PS The TIME set was hugely reliable (unlike, say, Spiderman) and hardly ever malfunctioned. I don’t suppose anyone on the board went to John Napier’s exhibition in Eastbourne a few years ago? I just recently found out about it from his website but, yes such an amazing body of work - touched upon in this documentary from that event. Hope it has another life because he truly is a genius. And his work sorely missed these days. John Napier - Stages Exhibition

I don’t know if it reached the West End but can anyone remember a musical version of Robin Hood? Bill Kenwright was involved and the cast were some of his version of Joseph. If it’s the one at the Piccadilly theatre in the era of Moby Dick then I saw this a few times. I remember it being a pretty cheap ticket and a lot of fun

I’ve got to confess I loved quite a lot of Which Witch - mostly EVERYTHING Viviene Parry did, as well as Maria Kesselman’s operatic vocals over the rock score (I never did see Benedicte Adrienne live). Camp yes, but never dull. Leonardo, on the other hand had me pondering the lighting rig for two thirds of the show. Possible the most arduous two (plus change) hours I EVER spent in a theatre.
I’m also on board for the Robin Hood musical and Moby Dick at the Piccadilly. Singlehandedly tried to keep that theatre open in the early 2000s!

@auditionpianist just posted this on twitter and I’m now in a youTube loop of all of Chris Jago’s drum booth videos from the Wicked US Tour. There’s more action here than is on stage half the time. Apologies if this is old, old footage for many of you but it’s new to me and I could watch it over and over..

I liked "Aladdin" a lot more than "Lion King," in fact. Even without the monkey?

I wonder if Disney would have kept it going a bit longer had Cameron not wanted Mary Poppins to go back to the Prince Edward as the live action film has probably boosted sales If they can incorporate Mary flying off on the carpet they would succeed in hanging onto the only worthwhile part of the show..

The first time I saw Blood Brothers at The Phoenix the lady next to me in the circle had her jacket on her lap and her ‘friend’ next to her spent much of Act 1 with her hand underneath it and being by no means subtle about her actions. Being the fairly innocent teen I was I moved in the interval.

We cannot have more than 2 choices on any ballot as that would be almost certain to have no clear majority. Lets say it was No Deal, Leave with negotiated deal or remain and results were say 32%, 21% and 47%? Well surely you should negotiate the new arrangement (deal or not) and put THAT (single) option to the people before putting it to rest? Either way. At least then the nation would have the facts laid before them for once and should be able to make an informed decision and not one based on lies, well intentioned promises that cannot be kept or a complete avoidance of the issues that arise altogether.

Halfway through this at the moment and it’s equal parts thrilling and terrifying. You can only guess at the lasting effects felt across Europe. Which makes me ever thankful to be living in nuclear-free New Zealand right now.

I was always impressed with the flying/spinning Beast transformation in those original productions of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. I went a number of times in Melbourne to try and figure that out. With the advantage of seeing Hugh Jackman’s Gaston thrown in for good measure.

Can I put a request in for the Piccadilly meg-mix after? A Metropolis, Moby Dick, Which Witch mash-up would make the West End a lot more fun.

For me, this still wins it as the best looking (and sounding!) licensed production. Although, the fact that they missed out the last couple of bars at the end will haunt my dreams forever. Agreed - loved those balloons too. Infact their flying rig (and entire theatre) look amazing. Lucky Mormons.

Not sure I can get on board with this casting based on the production photos that have been released. She seems to be swamped by the costume (and the child actors) which surely detracts from the menacing spirit of the role. Beth Malone is a fine actress but I feel that, much like in Moby Dick (the Longden/Kaye version) it would be better to keep the panto spirit intact and the gender-swopped casting alive. Laura Michelle Kelly looks like a perfect fit though.
