I've never been to the crucible, is it worth splashing out on the £40 band a tickets or sitting in the side section and paying £22? Comments about seating are towards the bottom of page 3 in this thread.

Enjoyed this tonight from the cheap side seats (didn’t feel like I missed anything with staging). Alex Young continues to combine fantastic comedy timing with perfect vocals and was made for the lead role.
They have a simple and effective set for the shop, which folds out. Lots of nice period touches.
The theatre was only about one third full, which is a shame, but people did move seats and fill the space out. I stayed in my second row seat and had a perfect view.
The sound quality was appalling for the first 15 minutes or so. First we had an echo, then it seemed like all the side speakers were turned off, so you could only hear the lines near you. This did sort itself out, but they really should have restarted the show for people who don’t know the book.
I’ve seen a few productions of She Loves Me and this rates somewhere in the middle, but full of charm and performed by a much larger cast than usual. Can’t fault any of the acting, but it’s just hard to make this style of musical come alive in such a big space. Do go see it and don’t hesitate to book the cheap seats!

It would have been meet BurlyBeaR too, but the trains are all to pot between Manchester and Sheffield so I’ve just rung up the Crucible for a credit. It’s a bus service between Stockport and Sheffield or you can get a reduced service which takes 80-90 minutes on the Hope valley line. Not doing it!

You do have the most terrible luck with trains, BurlyBeaR. No word of a lie, you were the first (and only) bear I thought of this morning when I heard the travel news on the wireless. I got the impression that trains are running via Huddersfield, which would normally be nice, but not if it doubles a journey that already takes far longer than it should. 😡 At least the torrential rain hasn't materialised...yet. 🙂

Sorry to hear of your illnesses and train issues! It really does suck when life gets in the way of theatre. Hope you end up having excellent days in some other way and I'll report back later on the show 😁

They haven't opened the auditorium doors yet with 5 minutes to go... not a great sign...

Even if it was to finish on time it would have been a rush to get the 5.20 slow train. If it finishes late I’d be on a chuffing bus or hanging about at the pumpkin cafe waiting for the 6.30 slow train!

We got started in the end, and the interval seems to have still come at roughly the scheduled time, so somehow they've magically made some time back!
It's very good so far, no standout tunes but it all suits the show and all of the leads are very good. Very dynamic set as well with a revolve. And the £22 seats are fine, worth saving the £18 on full price.

The set for this looks really ugly. Having seem two London and one NYC productions of this, this version has the highest production values by far. (now, I am sure there are plenty of people who realise this has a Christmas theme, only requires a small core cast and needs only a simple set design - but if I have any complaints about the Sheffield production, the set design isn't one of them)

I actually liked the set, it looked impressive all opened up and they did well creating different locations through wheeling different furniture and props in and out. Definitely far from ugly.

I agree, having seen NY & 2 London productions, the set was quite impressive and worked well. I preferred this production to the Meniere's and really enjoyed David Thaxtons performance.

Finally managed to get my 2022 theatre year going with a trip to Sheffield for a belated viewing of SLM this afternoon. A really charming show with a set that looked really good once it opened up and making fully use of the crucible stage and revolve. A really great cast assembled with Alex Young and David Thaxton working really well as Nowack and Balash with plenty of humour and chemistry between them as their romance played out on stage. As a score, it was very nice to listen and songs allowing everyone to shine with their own numbers. Having got a £22 side seat, it was great value and missed nothing. Certainly the design the auditorium provides good views from all sides so you can great seats here without breaking the bank. As for a rating, I’d certainly go with the critics and award 4⭐️ for this production.
