Everyone wants to work at the world-famous Crucible Theatre. Everyone!
As Samantha Womack herself said when interviewed on the wireless, "Sheffield at Christmas looks just like New York."

I've been to a few of the Sheffield Christmas productions over the years and they have always been fantastic.

I don’t know what parts of New York Ms Womack has been frequenting then! I did find myself smiling at the time, but it was kind of her to say it. There's no point going on local radio to sell tickets, and then being honest!

Love the show, love the cast so I'm there. A long journey for me but it will be worth it and guess it will have to involve an overnight stay. Anyone know if you can do a matinee and go from London and back in a day? Is the theatre near the station?

Yes you could do it in a day, it can be a long day by the time you’ve built in time for contingency, possible train delays etc though.

Anyone know if you can do a matinee and go from London and back in a day? Is the theatre near the station? Easy to do a matinee from London as a day trip, train takes about two hours each way so as an example London St Pancras 11.02 arrive Sheffield 12.59, return 18.00 back 20.07. Crucible is about 10 minutes walk from Sheffield station. Advance tickets between London and Sheffield start from about £19 though their availability greatly reduced over the Christmas period and into January. On the day without a railcard it's a hefty £84 return. I'm seeing a Saturday matinee in January and am travelling by National Express because the current train price on that day is £84 return or £56 with railcard. My journey will be Victoria Coach Station depart 9.00, arrive Sheffield Coach Station 12.40pm, then Sheffield Coach Station 6.30pm arrive London Victoria 10.20pm total cost £9.80 return. I prefer to travel by train but when it's £10 or £56 there's no way I'm paying an extra £46. Higher coach fares in December though. Coach station is slightly closer to the Crucible than the railway station. There's availability at the central Sheffield Travelodge at around £30 per room during She Loves Me

Thanks for the info. Looks like a long day so might stay over as suggested. I've got a railcard so can get a third off fares which will bring the price down.

It's always worth checking fares between King's Cross and Doncaster.
For example, on Saturday 18 December it's currently possible to book a return for £33.90. Then a return between Doncaster and Sheffield can be as low as £4.
If the connections work, the journey time isn't actually that much longer.

With the added bonus of the chance to stop off at Donny Market from some cut price French Fancies.

Anyone who is familiar with the theatre able to offer seating advice? I'm wondering about what legroom is like. Thanks in advance.

Anyone who is familiar with the theatre able to offer seating advice? I'm wondering about what legroom is like. Thanks in advance. I usually find legroom ok, I am just over 6’ 5” tall so this is very important. It is not “stretch out” room but you don’t feel too crammed in. Also because the rake is so steep from all seats your knees are not going to be up against the back of the seat in front. My seat of choice is generally h43 -on an aisle, nobody behind to grumble about the view being blocked (although it’s less of an issue in this theatre) and a quick exit at the end. But most importantly it’s a great central view. I try to avoid the corner seats as the two adjacent seats can be at an awkward angle with each other, difficult when like me you take up a lot of room or need comfort.

It’s built like a bowl, with moderately steep sides. There’s no segmentation between front and rear, no stalls or circle just one continuous tier. t I always go for an aisle just because I don’t like being hemmed in, there are plenty of them so take your pick. It’s a huge and very deep thrust and they stage shows almost like they were in the round. That said I’d avoid the extreme edges (band D) and unless you’re on a budget and need to only pay £22 for a C I’d go band A or B. Top price is only £40 even at weekends. This is the North! Legroom is the same throughout, unless you’re on the front row where depending on how they build the stage you might have a huge gap or a bit less. I’ve never had insufficient legroom on the front row and the stage is always low. The back few rows are not on sale but even if they were this theatres built in such a way that you never really feel distant. The back of the auditorium might go on sale later if it sells well, if they don’t need the seats it will be curtained off.
It’s a beautiful theatre, built for people to be able to see.

If people are staying over and want to take in two shows, the panto at the Lyceum over the road from the Crucible tends to be the best in the area (in my opinion).
Edited to add the legroom in the Lyceum gets worse the higher you go in the theatre.

Thanks for the advice both of you. Sounds like the seating and layout is similar to Chichester. I'll definitely be going for the best seats and at £40 that's a complete bargain.

Under an hour, BurlyBeaR? 😉 If steps are an issue, alece10, it's worth noting that you'll enter the Crucible auditorium about 2/3 of the way back. With few exceptions, you'll have to either walk down steps to your seat, or up steps.

Some lovely shots of the world-famous Crucible Theatre in the trailer. You'll notice the inverted i, which is a new thing. The singing isn't bad either...if you like that sort of thing.🙂

I went last night on the traditional first Monday showing! I did enjoy it but it just felt a little bit long. As usual the Crucible makes great use of its staging and the cast were great but it just had something missing. Although my day has been spent singing about vanilla ice cream so maybe I did like it more than I though ha. Liked it didn't love it.

Maybe they’ll trim it down in previews, if not thank god I’m at a matinee otherwise I’d be bedding down on the bench outside the Pumpkin Cafe on platform 8!

It's was 2 hrs 40, normally in theatre world that'd fly by but some bits just seemed to drag. Luckily I checked the start time as I'd guessed 7:45 but it was actually 7:15 so very nearly missed getting into town on time!

I was there last night and can say it’s certainly a treat for those of us with the winter blues. Yes, there were bits in Act 1 which felt a little slow but after Will He Like Me, the show starts to fire up and there some genuinely funny moments as well as tender ones. Alex Young is absolutely delightful as Amalia and we get to see her fully flesh out her character. The songs on their own aren’t particularly catchy but they compliment the story perfectly in a way we expect musical theatre numbers to. I was slightly disheartened to see how empty the side blocks were but I guess it’s a sign of the times we’re living in. About 65% full last night but the company certainly still give it their all. Definitely would reccomend catching it whilst the opportunity is still there

I've never been to the crucible, is it worth splashing out on the £40 band a tickets or sitting in the side section and paying £22?
