Frozen for the Prince Edward, or is it too soon? Or maybe it could go into Drury Lane after it reopens? 42nd St will have finished and it seems like the right size theatre.

I think Theatre Royal is a good shout for Frozen, unless RUT will want a RUT show to show off there for a bit.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...I would love for Hunchback of Notre Dame to go into the Prince Edward.
I think it's a terrific musical which was adapted well for the stage.

I believe Mary Poppins is the show rumoured to be heading back to the Prince Edward. Mr B says it was planned for the Adelphi but that fell through and Waitress has come earlier, so it'll go back to its original home. Guess that could still change!

The Shaftesbury is only closing for 8 weeks after Motown goes in late April, so a new show will be starting to move in from late June/early July.

Thats interesting, thought it was going to be down for quite a major refurbishment. www.shaftesburytheatre.com/development/It is, they got planning consent last week, but most of the works are taking place below the road (new bar etc. at stalls level) so they can do them while a show is still running - it hits profitability too much to close longer term. They're only closing to redecorate and reconfigure the auditorium - new seats eventually but they're moving the current ones first. All direct from the staff at their Open House tour this morning!

Oh what fun. We have another theatre now to speculate about. I must admit i do enjoy it and was getting a bit sad when most if the theatres were getting filled recently. Bring on the spec.

What exciting news. I'd even go as far as calling it magic. 🙂

The Shaftesbury is getting "The Illusionists" again from 6th July to 31st August. New stalls layout - same as the old one at the front, pushed the three blocks into two to match the front stalls and taken out the cross aisle towards the back. Tickets on sale now, don't all rush at once. The stalls rejig is such a shame. I loved sitting on that cross aisle & having extra leg room!

As of Monday there will be circa 11,395 empty West End seats with so many theatres dark for refurb/waiting for new productions to start.

I wonder if over 11,000 empty seats increases demand for other shows in town due to less competition or it doesn't make any difference as less people go to the theatre and only go to see shows they want to see anyway?

Anyone know what happens to the ice cream when a show closes? Stay in the freezer till the next show opens? Get distributed to other theatres owned by the same company? Binned?

We should also remember that the West End is a business ecosystem. Although not everyone eats out before or after a show, or stays overnight, many do, so dark theatres mean fewer restaurant reservations, quieter pubs and bars, and hotels with empty rooms.

It’s not the end of the world for the theatres to be dark as we know they’ll be reopening soon in the case of the Adelphi, Phoenix and Savoy.

Presumably the Dominion will stay quiet for a while now, as if Dolly does happen, it will still be quiet the last bit of Winter and the whole of Spring.

Amazingly, just three shows were listed on the electronic boards just now - Caroline, or Change, Songs for Nobodies, and The Wider Earth. Just shows how many empty theatres there are at the moment.

With quite a lot of recent transfer announcements, pretty much all the West End venues are booked until the end of the year. Garrick/Trafalgar have nothing past September, and Adrian Mole booking until October currently. Other than that, a pretty healthy landscape.

Playhouse might be free after 28 September if Fiddler doesn't extend again, and Gielgud will be free in December. Adelphi will be free from 19th Oct if Waitress doesn't extend.

Hmm, I can see Fiddler playing at least a final extension through the festive season. Hopefully Waitress might have picked up enough to also play through to January. And yes forgot about the Gielgud as Mockingbird just been announced, but I guess it will get something from Dec-April. Maybe Gielgud could get a run of Romantics Anonymous or the Menier Bridges in depending on how it does.
