nimaxtheatres.com/shows/42-balloons/Haven't seen any official announcement yet other than a few posts on twitter, but looks like booking is now open and cast announced for the three staged concert version of the new musical 42 Balloons at the Vaudeville 14/21/28 November. I remember listening to the titular song that was released on Youtube during lockdown and loving the song and the 80's synth vibes of it. Looking forward to seeing the rest of this!

I'd be more interested in a stage production based on 99 Luftballoons (Wasn't this story already sort of told in Flight of the Lawnchair Man?)

I was just about to mention Flight of the Lawnchair Man was inspired by this as well. Seems a weird topic to have 2 different musicals about (though I actually quite enjoy Lawnchair Man).

It works for me. I like it.

Anyone else there last night?
It was extremely well received by the audience and from the reactions I've seen online too.
I did think the first half was a lot stronger than the second, but it was very good. This was maybe because I thought they'd tried to add plot twists to the second half to bulk out the story a bit but upon research it seems it's more true than I thought!!
Loved the musical style of it, some very catchy songs, and the whole thing seemed a little bit like a mix of Come From Away, Dear Evan Hansen and Eugenius to me.
The cast were all fantastic, and whilst it was the first 'concert style' show I've seen, I was so impressed at how put together it was, and all it was really lacking from a full production was a set.
I imagine the remaining performance over the next couple of weeks will sell fast after last night, but think it's definitely worth seeing and would imagine there's definitely a life in this show.
A definite 4 stars.

Very happy to see this show has a further life although a five week run even in the (smaller) Quays Theatre seems very ambitious.
I definitely want to see it again and fully staged, even if I have to travel from Kent to Salford. Hopefully there will be some actual ballooning upwards at some point !

Oooh. What do we think? Full cast for the Lowry or maybe a West End run? I absolutely loved this when I saw it in concert last year.

There's a private preview event, featuring interviews and performances of some of the songs, taking place at The Lowry tomorrow afternoon.

Just been giving the recently released cast recording a listen to. I really like those songs. Definitely an 80's vibe. Got this show booked for a Sunday show at the end of April.

Just out from the second preview, absolutely fantastic. I loved it, I'm hooked. Energetic performances from all thè cast, brilliant 80s vibes from the tunes and surprisingly bittersweet ending.

Good to read a really positive early review richey . I'm booked in for next Sunday's show myself. Having had a listen to some of the music on YT, there are some really good songs in there.

I am curious to hear thoughts from someone who has seen this at the Vaudeville and now, as I remember listening to a podcast where they mentioned that Act 2 is almost entirely new songs. I loved this at the Vaudeville and I thought it was in a really good shape so I hope the changes didn’t take anything away from it…

For a second preview this was in excellent shape and got a great reception.

I saw this last night and was in love from the start - definitely a new favourite and I did something I’ve never done before and went and bought a t-shirt - will be back again before the end of this run! BurlyBeaR can we get a poll? 🎈

I was lucky enough to see this on Saturday night and went in without knowing very much about it at all, other than positive buzz from the concert. Fully agree with all that’s been said above, it’s an exciting and fresh new musical that was in incredibly strong shape for its 4th(?) preview. It’s a varied score with some incredibly catchy numbers, with Evelyn Hoskins’ Helium being a particular standout.
It’s such a quirky story and I definitely recommend not reading too much about it in advance, there are a handful of twists and turns that took me by complete surprise.
It is also clear from the excellent set, staging and full range of merch that this has some decent investment behind it and plans for a future life. I very much look forward to seeing where it goes next!

It is also clear from the excellent set, staging and full range of merch that this has some decent investment behind it and plans for a future life. Good news on the merch, investment and positive review! I really hope it comes to London, as I can't make this run. I did see the Vaudeville concert and agree that Evelyn Hoskins, her character and her song, were the highlight there too. Back in 2022, I felt there was something a bit underdeveloped about the male protagonist, as I just never understood WHY he did what he did. I'm interested to see if they've developed his motivations. My identification at the concert was completely with Evelyn Hoskins's character, as her reactions and everything she did were completely comprehensible. And like you say, "Helium" was the peak emotional song. Seen through Hoskins's character's eyes, the whole story was affecting and worked brilliantly. All the songs, and song styles, in this were terrific too, with the Lin Manuel Miranda style rap, and some of the rock songs, particularly rousing. I recall thinking at the time that this and Sylvia were my favourite two new British musicals in development. Anyway, I really hope this fully staged developed version comes down South. Fingers crossed.
