What do you think they mean by "re-imagining"? The exhibit sounds intriguing, but I love the V&A to begin with, and have to hit them up at least two or three times whenever I'm in town!

Not Jamie, i agree, but I think Six is, it might not be the best bit of theatre ever but it's uniqueness, impact and success on both sides of the Atlantic (and around the world) I think makes it a classic.

They already have a fair few musical costumes (Lion King, Wicked etc) in the museum, so it sounds as if it might just be an expansion of that, maybe using the space in the neighbouring gallery that is currently occupied by an exhibition on the history of the Royal Academy of Dance?

Bit of an unplanned visit to this today. Started off as a cup of tea in L Lewis Oxford Street to use up my vouchers for 2 free cakes and ending up at the V&A.
I am ashamed to say I have never been to the V&A before and I have lived in London for years.
My friend is a member so we got to use the Members restaurant which was very swanky. Had a nice lunch with the "sloane brigade" and then took in the exhibition.
It was very nice and not too crowded. Lots of interesting bits of info and props, costumes etc and plenty of bits to read about. My favourite part was a little seated area where they showed clips from various musicals which was really interesting and not only West End, there were clips from some of the Hope Mill shows and a couple more regional theatres.
As you exit that area it takes you into, what I presume is a more permanent exhibition area dedicated to theatre but also included plays, opera, ballet. Lovely costume from the NT Follies in 2017.
Nice unplanned day which is something I seldom do.

Fab exhibition that i cant wait to revisit.
Great to see the whole gambit from G&S, 1920's musicals that have fallen of the radar, Salad Days, Sondheim, Lion King and Wiz at the Hope Mill.

Can anyone who has been give an idea of how long i should factor in for a visit ? Firstly it depends how long you spend looking at stuff. I’m a pretty swift mover through a museum so I did it in like half an hour, excluding the video which is something like 30-45 mins in run time, so just over an hour all together. I guess if you want to read every single piece of memorabilia and watch the whole movie then 90 minutes? 2 hours absolute max. |

Both exhibts are free, late night friday opening and are on for yonks can vouch for this , was always fascinated by the old theatrical display / exhibition but wanted something a little more. The redesign and extras are really fab - the JamIe + Six costumes on display up close were a massive highlight for me and my mate was constantly trying to pull me away from it all! They’ve added some lovely gems to the existing collection too, such as Starlight Express boots, Lion King + Moulin Rouge costumes, a few set design models (Sweeney Todd, Swan Lake..) and of course the reel footage of excerpts from archived productions. Very interesting to see moments from these proshots!! American Psycho the musical with Matt Smith 🙃🙃 .. the v&a itself is always gorgeous and anyone could spend a whole day in the museum if they wanted to. definitely check out this part though. And for free ?!!! ! |

TLDR; 1 hour would be plenty if you’ve been through the old stuff still included before, but maybe a little longer if you end up mesmerised by costumes / visuals like I am

I walked around this exhibition while waiting for the special screening of Jerusalem a few weeks ago, it is well worth going esp as it is free.

I went this week.
I had previously but this had been updated.
Unless you're going to take the time to read every single tag on every single display, you can knock this out in an hour.
Particularly impressive (in my opinion) were The Lion King costumes- they'e impressive at he best of times- and Elphabah's costume from Act II in Wicked. As was the set design for the Staunton/Ball Sweeney Todd.
Some great Panto Dames costumes, costumes from Everybody Loves James, Six, the red dress from the latest Company revival.
Don't miss the blur pair of roller skates from Starlight Express and the shoes worn in Cats.
