Has anyone else seen this yet? I mention because it has quite a few British actors that have been seen on the West End stage over the last decade: for starters Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Eljiofor, Benedict Wong, Sheila Atim and a certain theatrical knight of the realm who you can can probably guess who it is if you’ve seen the trailer for starters but good Lord, I thought the whole thing was a dogs breakfast.
I thought it just lumbered on without any reason for being made beyond making even more money for Disney (and I don’t know how it has a 12 certificate, it’s certainly the most violent Marvel film I’ve seen, like Sam Raimi made an Evil Dead Lite for beginners, there will be lots of children of a ‘nervous disposition’ that will have sleepless nights after watching this) Maybe you’ll love this but I was so disappointed with it, such a comedown after Spider—Man: No Way Home.

I went today and enjoyed it for the most part, although it is all a bit disjointed. I did spot Sheila Atim, although she is literally in it for a minute or two.

I do wonder how Marvel got away with making Doctor Strange a 12A when The Batman got a 15 but I suspect it's because it's fantasy violence and not realistic violence. I generally enjoy the Marvel films but I do wonder if Kevin Feige is struggling to balance things with the TV shows and the movies. When it was 2-3 films a year, it was much easier to be consistent. |

I don't get why people seem surprised when these trash Marvel films turn out to be lame - they have always been lowest common denominator, production line money spinners, films for people who don't really watch films. Not even well made as action films, with poorly choreagraphed fight scenes, terrible CGI, and ugly cinematography.
Watch Everything Everywhere All at Once instead.

I’ve only seen up to What If? I find it hard to care much about any of this ‘phase 4’ stuff. Think they should have been rested for a while after Endgame, though obviously that was never going to happen because $$$$$$$.

I did enjoy the film but I think weirdly it could have been slightly longer. I'm impressed Sam Raimi was able to include horror elements and keep it a 12A and there are a few nods to past horror films.
The MCU formula works but I do wonder if filmmakers find it restricting, for all Warner Bros' faults with DC which tends to be more hit and miss, their director driven mandate does result in more interesting films and when they hit, they hit big.

It removes any jeopardy. The last Spiderman left me bored rigid. I saw Everything Everywhere All at Once, which was brilliant for 25 minutes then rapidly deteriorated into another multiverse yawnfest. |

The most compelling stakes in Marvel films are always emotional stakes, not physical ones. (The world is never actually going to end in a continuing series and increasingly bigger lumps of stuff falling from the sky got old fast.) The multiverse opens up emotional stakes because you can literally inflict anything on your main characters. |

I’m definitely nowhere near as invested in phase 4, mostly because of the need to watch the tv programmes too. I loved Wandavision but nothing since has made me watch episode 2 of anything.
That said, Dr Strange was indeed great fun, but just a big hollow spectacle. I cared about the events leading up to Infinity War & Endgame. They hit all the right beats in just the right way and always had consequences. Knowing that everything will be alright ‘somewhere’ takes the power out of everything.

When will I ever learn? A couple of brainy celebrities tweeting that they were moved to tears by the latest Strange work persuaded me to give it a chance.
Big mistake. These Marvel films are definitely not for me. I had zero emotional engagement and was bored rigid throughout the action scenes.
In recent times, Joker and The Batman are the only superhero films I can recall enjoying.
Two stars.

Saw Thor: Love and Thunder this afternoon and found it So much better than Doctor Strange: it didn’t try and throw everything but the kitchen sink in and had some good performances from the lead actors (not sure about Russell Crowes Greek accent though 😂)

I found Dr Strange so boring towards the end it was just something on in the background. The most shocking thing was how poor and obvious so much of the CGI was
The only movie since Endgame that I've really enjoyed, and almost loved Shang Chi. The TV series on Disney plus have all been let downs do far and like others, I find the multiverse concept just a bit of a cop out and I'm sick of having to keep on top of every marvel thing to enjoy the next film.
I am looking forward to the new Thor though, Ragnorok is one of my all time favourites

So much of it is CGI at this point. They clearly don't have the budget for quantity and quality. In particular I'm utterly fed up with CGI puppets having CGI fights.

And it affects the vfx artists badly Crunch time culture is rife in the movie and video game industry. It’s horrible but there’s not enough people who care to drive for change And Disney is shovelling so much stuff. Have you seen what Marvel and Lucasfilm plan to shovel out. At this point all they’re providing is ‘content’ that follows similar beats and cgi that may or not be good |
