Can any expert name the leads ? Zizi Strallen as Mary Poppins. Charlie Stemp as Bert Poppins.
Was Killian Donnely the Phantom ?
Michael Ball as Javert. Carrie Fletcher as Fantine. John Owen Jones as Jon Val Jean.

Loved watching this. If social distancing doesn’t apply onstage, what’s the difficulty with having a socially distanced audience ?

What a brilliant advert for British talent this was. An amazing performance by talent at the top of their game. Good that they could slip in an advert for the upcoming Les Mis concerts too. Not that they will need it with reduced capacity and limited run.

Not that they will need it with reduced capacity and limited run. The advert was as “slipped in” as every celebrity with a book to sell “slips in” an advert when on a chat show.

Great to see the shows, but oh that hideous awkwardly shaped stage with those fussy graphics on the LED screens swamping and upstaging the actors. It really is hard to know where to look. The same with strictly and many other shows.

Well the whole thing reduced me to a blubbering wreck.

The lovely Rob Houchen was there too. And the equally lovely Bradley Jaden [br1 ] Indeed. But I couldn't remember his name.

He may be lovely, but with that top knot you wouldn't want to be sitting behind him! 🙂

Seen so many tweets saying Christine was miming. Even if she was I still really enjoyed it

Loved seeing this last night. Usually got a heart of stone, but was a bit misty eyed at the end when they sang "one show more." 😂

It looked like it was mimed from the point the Phantom asks her to sing that repeated end motif that keeps getting a tone higher each time (sorry, that's the easiest way I can think of to describe it!) - it starts at about a G (I think) so it's already quite high and then keeps going up. It is within a soprano's range but could easily go out of tune without the voice being properly warmed up, but I'm not sure if the whole thing is normally mimed from there or if it is just the last high E that is pre-recorded and mimed.

Oddly enough, last night it looked to me like she was miming from the start, though the post-boat section looked genuine. Watching it back here, though, it doesn’t seem quite so obvious. I saw people on Twitter saying they were all lip synching due to COVID concerns. But if that’s the case, JOJ went to a heck of a lot of unnecessary trouble inflating his lungs for the final section of One Day More... I found the Phantom section rather flat, if I’m honest.

The Les Mis cast didn't look to be miming at all to me. Neither did the Poppins cast as they were slightly out of time at one point. Phantom was the only one that looked remotely mimed, but I expected that.

I found the Phantom section fell flat as well. I don’t think it helped that they chopped out a lot of the song though. I thought it was live up until the end.
Enjoyed Mary Poppins and Les Mis though felt a bit for Carrie that they shoehorned her in on One Day More as it just sounded off to me and she seems to have felt a need to explain it was in a different key than she’s used to given she’s not normally singing those lines in that song.

I thought the whole thing felt rushed and chopped up - editing the songs to wedge them into the performance slot felt jarring, as did the abrupt change from musical to musical. It might have worked better without Mary Poppins (so, with just Phantom and Les Mis, there would have less editing of songs for length to be done) - MP would have worked better placed at the beginning of the broadcast on its own, with the MP cast joining everyone at the end for the last bit of One Day More.

What was the piece of music used at the beginning during the shots of the empty theatres? It's familiar but I can't place it and it's stuck in my head now.

wardrobemistress76 That was quick thank you! I thought it was Mary Poppins, and tried some of the tracks on Spotify, but I didn't click on that one as I thought "it's definitely not A Spoonful of Sugar."
