That's a pretty big chunk of ceiling. I thought all West End theatres were checked after the Apollo (curious) incident - I'm guessing the roof has sprung a leak. Hope the 'minor injuries' are just that.

This is awful, hopefully nobody's too badly injured since it didn't fall very far.
Is there a body that checks these old theatres are safe for use?

I was sat up there in the back row of the grand circle, right under the hole. Yellow wet floor signs were in the bar and auditorium before the start which I thought at the time was a bit strange. Then about 10 minutes in a couple in front of me got very restless and left their seats to speak to the ushers, which was in hindsight likely due to the first few drops of water coming through. Another 10 minutes on, a sudden massive noise, gushing water and some hideous screams. At which point I grabbed my jacket and legged it, honestly fearing for my life.
Now an hour and a half later, I’m on theatreboard posting about it, naturally...

That’s my friend’s tweet. We were at the back of the stalls and about half an hour in there were suddenly shouts from the circle and people screaming. The actors were called off the stage as the house lights went up after about a minute or so of confusion. The ushers did an excellent job of getting everyone out so quickly. We saw a handful of people bloodied and dusty and one woman with her head bandaged. Fire engines on the scene pretty quickly but with both roads blocked with roadworks it wasn’t as accessible as it could have been. Hopefully everyone is ok |

I wonder how long it’ll take to reopen the theatre? The Apollo incident took the theatre out of action for 4 months.

Very relieved to hear that it seems like everyone is ok. Terrible news, regardless.

From a friend who was there this evening:
'So .... we were in the Piccadilly theatre London watching “Death of a Salesman” 30 mins in to play there’s strange noises ! Sounds but like explosion and then screaming , lights come up and they shout “everybody out “ I’ve never walked out so fast ! It transpired the ceiling above the circle collapsed! Scary moment!!'
Glad everyone okay.

This will again ignite the debate about lack of investment in theatre infrastructure in the West End. Considering the amount ATG charge for rent and contra at their venues, this will surely be a talking point.
