What I am annoyed about is they dim it for some and not for others. Why not dim it for all? They didn't do it to Tony Winners , long time achievers , people that have a legacy. I feel this is wrong on so many levels. Only 6 theatres is not enough for Marin Mazzie.

The specific theatres is tradition - they are places associated with her. That in itself is very powerful, and of course dimmed lights are not the only way to pay tribute to a huge talent whose life has been tragically cut short.
There has to be a line drawn somewhere otherwise the lights would almost constantly be dimmed and the tribute would lose meaning and impact.

It's a tough one. Personally I found it moving that specific theatres associated with her did it. But I also get the feeling of, annoyance isn't quite the right word, maybe frustration that someone somewhere decided she wasn't 'big enough' to warrant it. Because while maybe she isn't a 'celebrity' name, you only have to look at the tributes to know she was a huge part of the Broadway community. So yes I do feel all should have dimmed.
But it's also that question of who makes that call and who we do it for. Her without a doubt to my mind, but obviously theatres can't do it for every former performer who dies, and somewhere a decision has to be made. It's a tough one though.
I'm always sad we don't have a similar tradition here. Though perhaps, off the above certain theatres could start doing something if a performer/director/writer had a connection with their venue.

Who decides is it the owner or the theatre manager or producer of show in situ?
For some names it is a no brainer for the ones a bit further down the pecking order then decision is more individual.

We do have that tradition, certainly in the West End the lights have been dimmed for all the greats who pass. Also certain theatres have made solo efforts where appropriate, too. Really? I don’t recall (not doubting but perhaps it isn’t as well known, I remember way back to the late 90s hearing about it for Broadway and seeing pictures of people gathered for it, but not here) |
