Marvellous.
I know Tommy Steele is eternally youthful but the fact he's now over twice the age Glenn Miller was when he died is pushing it a bit.

The Kenwrigh version?! Surely not... That's what I thought! Exactly the same creative team (and Tommy...) as The Glenn Miller Story which BKL toured (which I saw and incidentally thought was a very classy affair) but now with a slightly different title and artwork. Not sure what the deal is here! And (not related to daniel's post) with Tommy's age, well in The Glenn Miller Story tour, Tommy came out as Tommy and gave a brief monologue type thing about how much he loves Glenn Miller before launching into the story, where Tommy 'became' Glenn, so I can see the argument about his age, but if they keep with that convention, I buy it much more than an 81 year old playing someone in their pre-40's with no set-up or explanation. But we'll see!

I rather like living in a world where Tommy Steele is still going strong and headlining shows.

I know that I had a pretty ropey nights sleep, but I’ve woken up to the news that a sub-Blackpool pier Tommy Steele starring Glenn Miller tribute show is going into the Coliseum. Is there appropriate space for that many coaches to stop on St Martins Lane? Will there be extra air con installed to remove the waft of perm lotion and pear drops? Who will be older; the audience or Tommy Steele? Why is this happening?

I teach Tommy Steele's gardener the clarinet (how's that for reflected glory!)

This again proves, as has been discussed in other topics, a major demographic of the UK theatre going public is white, 50+ and (probably mostly) middle class too.
This helps forms the choices of what theatres and producers put on...

Tommy Steele is a legend! Legend is not always a complement! Quite often it just means old and doing it for the cash. We sat through the first act of ‘Tommy Steele - What A Show’ about 20 years ago and it was outdated and out of touch back then. This is for the grey pound, but if it keeps them off the streets it’s no bad thing.

What puzzles me is what has Tommy Steele got to do with Glenn Miller?
As far as I know, Tommy Steele does not play the trombone nor did he ever sing any of the Glenn Miller songs like "Moonlight Serenade", "Chatanooga Choo Choo" or "In the Mood", and Glenn Miller did not sing or have big teeth!

Totally agreed - my mind was made up after seeing the "sneak performance" on The One Show the other week - awful......

Has Tommy Steele ever gone missing? Did Glenn Miller ever own a little white bull? I don’t know. I’m just throwing it out there. (I’m clutching at straws really...)

Tommy Steele is a legend! As in "from hundreds of years ago". I think it's great that he's still going. Much like Glenda Jackson. Same age as Tommy and leading a play on Broadway.

This helps forms the choices of what theatres and producers put on... Tommy Steele's fanbase is not in their 50s or 60s. When I saw them lined up outside the New Theatre here in Oxford when he was touring the Glenn Miller thing here a couple of years ago, they are well into their 70s.

I have been told off on this board in the past for making derogatory remarks about a show that I hadn't seen, and here I am doing it again! I do know however that I greatly admire Glenn Miller and his style of music, and the last time I saw Tommy Steele (at the Palladium in "Scrooge") it was heavy going. But I will wait with an open mind to see what other people think of the Glenn Miller show before saying anything further about it – apart from what I just said!

It's odd isn't it. Similarly, what's Colm Wilkinson got to do with Les Mis? He's never stolen a loaf of bread in his life. And don't get me started on Elaine Paige and fur balls. I mean granted, I've wanted to slit my own throat listening to Michael Ball doing Sweeney Todd. But come on, he's never been arrested for murder? Why was he even playing that part?

I saw the show on tour and it was great fun. Band sounded amazing and Tommy was giving it his all - really fab to see. This is a passion project for him. I've definitely said this already on another thread about this show, but Tommy begins the show as Tommy Steele, explaining his passion and love of Glenn Miller, and then goes into 'playing' Glenn in the story of his music. Show is being slightly expanded for the Coliseum run than it was on tour, some returning cast members and some new. Even saw an ad in the Evening Standard that said Marti Webb was in it! Anyway, don't knock it 'til you've tried it. I thought it was a great evening.

Gosh ….it's a big theatre to fill though! Lets hope us oldies are not on the streets ( or on the street corner in my case) and in the theatre!

I think I'd rather see Glenda Jackson as Glenn Miller Or Tommy Steele as King Lear... He could come on as Tommy, announce his passion for Shakespeare, then introduce us to his three daughters, Flash, Bang and Wallop. Kenwright’s probably reading this now...

Or Tommy Steele in the Ken Dodd Story . Kenwright will be making phone calls now .

I have just checked the FROM THE BOX OFFICE advert and I see there are very few seats sold for this in the Stalls and Dress Circle, even for the opening night, and of the many seats remaining available, about half of them are being offered at something around 50% discount.
I know that I said some very unkind things about Tommy Steele earlier in this thread, along with some other members, but he is a living legend – as Ryan rightly pointed out – and it would be sad to see him in a show in the West End that nobody turned up to see even on the first night! Where are all his fans? Mostly in care homes, I expect!
I am now feeling rather guilty and wondering whether I need to do penance by going to see it, but I think I will wait until after the opening night. But then again, this is Show Business and it has not been unknown on Broadway at least for Opening Night and Closing Night to co-incide!
Meanwhile, I wish Tommy the very best of luck and I will refrain from saying 'break a leg!' because with people over 80 that can mean more than just bad luck!!
