I always think if you're going to name a theatre after something like a kiln or a chocolate factory or a chickenshed, then the name really should reflect the history of the building. If you can't look at a theatre name without going "oh, I see, it's named after this [person]/[local area]/[pub]/[building feature]/whatever", then it's an odd choice of name. Mind you, they've got form for that at least, why on earth was it called the Tricycle to begin with? (I mean, I've looked it up and could now answer that question, but I'd be surprised if many people knew without checking.) You’re leaving us hanging, Baemax...okay, we could all look it up, but it’s quite nice to have the story on here for the record.

Oddly, Kiln isn't that easy to say as although it looks like one syllable, it's really two if you're to sound the final "n". I also think that unlike "Tricycle" it will be easier to mishear/less easy to understand if people aren't familiar with it. But I'm sure it will become better known in time.

I think Kiln is a great new name for this theatre. And anyone that thinks differently can just get on their bike.

Kiln isn't that easy to say All hard consonants, spiky, and something I associate with death, asbestos and getting your eyebrows singed. No, don't like it at all.

I quite like the name, it's relates to the area it's in, Kilburn and it doesn't sound generic unlike Tricycle.

Does anyone remember the great Tricycle fire? It was supposedly arson, but I don’t think they ever found the culprit. Some say it was a disgruntled actor. Given this history the new name might be tempting fate.

Always liked this Theatre, name change will take time to get used to, booked the first three shows (surprised they were on general sale, only checked the web site out of interest). Still smile when I think back to the idiocy that was Ben Hur, their last Christmas show.
Adding to my calendar, computer would not recognise the name change, so still the Tricycle for now.

Help, please, from anyone who has successfully booked: I've tried, but the new site seems hopelessly uninformative in terms of listing performance times and discounts, which the old one used to show separately so you knew immediately, if for instance you wanted a matinee and/or a discount, which date to click on.
Now I can only see prices for individual dates; I cannot find a section about booking info; it's not in the FAQ etc, so is it there and I've just not found it yet or have they unhelpfully omitted all this essential info?

Hi showgirl Click on 'Buy Tickets' (Top Right) or ‘See Upcoming Shows' Click on 'More Info and Buy Tickets' for the show you want Click on ‘Book Now’, this will give a list of all the Dates Click on the Date you want, this will give you a seating plan where you can select your seat and the price you want, all shows have a range of prices. The above steps worked for me on my Computer and iPad.

“Artistic director Indhu Rubasingham told The Stage the name Kiln “absolutely locates [the theatre] in Kilburn” as well as “denoting a space of transformation, heat, energy and forging”.”
Ha ha. It locates the theatre in Kilburn only because it has the same letters in it not because of any historical connection or because the two words have any meaning in common - they could have called it The Bun.
Also it shows up the sad lack of scientific knowledge amongst arts graduates if they think a kiln has anything to do with “forging”.

Thank you; that does indeed seem to be what you have to do, but it's very long-winded as it means searching by date, then checking prices, etc, whereas before it was easy to see which dates to try and also what the general times/days were, e.g. Wed/Sat matinees from whichever date, etc, concessions available at performances and so on. I will have to ring or email them when I have time...

A kiln is a place which you can’t see inside when the 'magic' is happening and where it can go horribly and irreversibly wrong.

Haven't been there since I saw Sean Hughes do his 'Life Becomes Noises' show back into 2013, I really should make an effort and go and see something there sometime soon.

Don’t mind either way, what’s the fuss? I always thought Tricycle was a weird name though, it made it sound like a children’s theatre.

Like I said in another thread, I thought the Tricycle was a children's theatre like the Unicorn for years because of the name.
May I suggest that there are far more important things to demonstrate about instead like Brexit, the traitor in the White House, whether the labour party is one thing or another and so on.
It really is just a name and not a very clear one at that.

To do this???
It’s fine
But has obviously been done on the cheap
It’s such a shame
Signage awful
The layout same as before
Unclear why it took them this long
The only such refurbishment in the UK which has met my standards
Is the ROH

Come on @parsley bit harsh, Theatre itself is transformed if generic in a baby bridge way.
Intrigued to hear your thoughts on the play.later.

Im actually agreeing with Mr Misery. It has never been explained why it took TWO years to refurb a small theatre. The new season had better be flipping good.

The Kiln looks very similar to the Dorfman although I get the comparison to the Bridge as well.

And others.... "...a letter to The Stage signed by artists including playwrights Richard Bean, Rebecca Lenkiewicz, April de Angelis and Tanika Gupta, states that they stand behind the venue’s “proposition that theatre is not here to fossilise culture, but to invigorate it”. The letter, also signed by director Cooke, Royal Shakespeare Company deputy artistic director Whyman, and Orange Tree Theatre artistic director Paul Miller, states: “We write to congratulate Indhu Rubasingham and everyone at Kiln Theatre – producers, creative learning team, administrators, box office, everyone – on the great achievement of transforming and reopening the building this week.” It adds: “We fully acknowledge the rich and special history of the Tricycle… But we stand with Kiln and its proposition that theatre is not here to fossilise culture but to invigorate it. While honouring the past, it must also reach out to new audiences and artists, who will come to Kiln with fresh perspectives, ideas, energy. Theatre’s mutability is its strength.” The letter is also signed by playwrights Simon Stephens, Roy Williams and Tanika Gupta, and designer Tom Piper." www.thestage.co.uk/news/2018/playwrights-and-arts-leaders-including-dominic-cooke-rally-behind-indhu-rubasingham-in-support-of-kiln-theatre/

As I understand it, they took out the entire auditorium and shipped it to a school. They then re-built from scratch within a shell. Including the time needed to safety-test and fit out as a functioning theatre, 2 years seems about right to me. Very charitable of you!
