As the dust settles on Christmas and new year, and as the Easter eggs come out of the box, the BBC once again unleashes the six hopefuls vying for ESC obscurity with the song choice for us to select from. www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-42800985All I can say is there isn't a Pearl Carr and Teddy Johnson amongst them (younger readers may need to google those names.)

Including Liam Tamne for those who love his very nice hair.

It's very inconsiderate of the BBC to schedule this when I'm in London watching 42nd Street.

Oh dear. Is this really the set of songs we could have found?
Only one has a decent hook (the repeated forever motif in Storm by SuRie)
Most of them sing with atrocious diction making it hard to hear the words.
Liam is pretty but the song is naff.
My guess is it will be between SuRie and the girl group. But who can tell!

If there's any sense, it'll be Jaz Ellington.

Since when have sense and Eurovision ever gone together, @ryan?

I adore Liam Tamne who was the hottest Enjolras ever, but that song is a stinker.

The Jaz Ellington song is strange in terms of the story it is telling. It is not uplifting or heartwarming. I find it really rather unpleasant.
Well sung. Well written. To a point. (It doesn't have a hook or a gear change to sustain interest)
But lyrically it is a man saying he is stringing along his new girlfriend. Not appealing at all.
And it is just not Eurovision.
He has a great voice but this song sucks.

No doubt a fair few fabulous readers on this forum enjoy Eurovision Song Contest and this year in Song for Europe we have a couple of West End connected acts.
Liam Tamme who was Link in Hairspray and has been in Les Mis and Phantom is performing a song called Astronaut.
Goldstone a female vocal trio featuring Aime Atkinson who is losing her head every night in Six The Musical and has been in numerous other roles over the last few years are performing a number called Feel the Love.

Are these really the best songs submitted?
Although we could have the best song in the world sung by Ed Sheeran and Adele as a duet and we would still only just scrape about 10 points.
What's missing every year is the performers ability to really sell the song as well as sing it.

I haven't watched Eurovision in years, but one of those people is apparently Debbie Kurup's sister. I don't know if I have quite enough interest to watch them all though.

What's missing every year is the performers ability to really sell the song as well as sing it. You say that but last year we actually put in at least a bit of effort and came away with 111 points. If we keep up the same amount of effort every year maybe Europe might start taking us seriously again.

This is true, Lucie Jones did well for us. But 99 of those points came from the Jury, only 12 from the public vote. Something isn’t connecting somewhere. It was a similar picture the year before - our pair did well in the jury section and then scored a mere 8 points with the public.
Have to say though, I love this new scoring system. It makes it much more exciting!

Like being somebody’s astronaut is a thing?! Disappointing.

A dreadful set of songs. The whole Eurovision thing is like a poisoned chalice - no-one wants to have anything to do with it now. We could send Adele with a Grammy Award winning song and we would still have null points!
Liam Tamme has the best voice but the worst song.

For those of us who are really old, this number sounds intriguingly like an upbeat jazz song from 1936 by Matty Malneck and Johnny Mercer called 'Goody, Goody!' – and no worse for that!

Never understood this. Why don’t we send Adele or someone in the top rank with a brilliant song? What are the entrance rules, so to speak?

^ Well for starters the artist in question would have to be willing to go. I'd imagine Adele would rather do her washing that night... Rules for who is sent? I really don't think there are any beyond the fact that you are only allowed six people on the stage. And the song mustn't go on beyond three minutes. Other countries have sent well respected artists in the past. We sent Andrew Lloyd Webber once, playing his piano and looking proudly towards the lass who was singing his song. He managed to get us a few extra points but not enough to win the competition. Jade managed to get poked in the boob by one of the remaining four people on the stage who were pretending to play the violin. She was poked by the violin bow, I recall. Nice song, but not as nice as France's that year, performed by big name (in France at least) Patricia Kaas. Et S'il Fallait Le Faire. Very Piaf!

What are the entrance rules, so to speak? the last "high profile" singer we sent was Englebert Humperdink in 2012 and Bonnie Tyler in 2013 - they came nowhere!!!! So, I think any artist with any kind of "profile" would rather gouge their eyes out with a tea spoon than touch this.

It was a totally facile lyric - It's my time repeated over and over. But easy enough to understand which probably helped.

It was a totally facile lyric - It's my time repeated over and over. But easy enough to understand which probably helped. Yes, all right, I take your point. But my point was that was that even with The Lord, known to millions worldwide, we didn’t gain enough points to win the competition. If we’re talking points, it’s worth pointing out that even coming fifth we were still 214 points behind the Norwegian lad playing his violin (genuinely, not just poking people), and the 214 points lead was still way above what we actually achieved (173; I’ve just checked.) The “facile” lyric was provided by multi award winning Diana Warren, after Tim Rice turned down the dubious honour of writing for Eurovision for the second time. (His first attempt entitled Try It And See, written with ALW would be turned down by the UK Eurovision Panel back in the 60s and it was later used as Herod’s Song in a well known show they wrote together...)

Always thought we should send something really OTT one year, get the GAY Club audience to choose who we send.

Always thought we should send something really OTT one year, get the GAY Club audience to choose who we send. To be honest, given how OTT everyone else has been over the years, I doubt anyone would notice. We have tried all sorts of styles and genres - to no avail. Even if we did have the bestest song in the world ever, with the most amazing staging, brilliant vocals and a huge promo tour, we would still fail to register with the voters of Europe.
