Well having seen how quickly the tickets have gone, I bit the bullet and got a front row seat for a Saturday night at the end of October - I'm sure the time will absolutely fly by...(just hoping Jim Broadbent makes it through until then in one piece, he's not exactly a spring chicken, is he?)

I had no idea what this was about and having booked ahead for Young Marx, only to find plenty of seats still available during the run (and some better and cheaper than mine), I didn't even look until today. Having done so, and much as I like some of Martin McDonagh's work, I find it sounds absolutely ghastly (historical setting, mention of a writer of fairytales etc), so unless it turns out to be a rave and there are day seats, I shall steer well clear. Happy to save the money and not to have to commit to a time and date so far ahead, too!

Only Martin McDonagh can breathe poetry into three simple words: Not. A. Word. Not a word, not a word, not a word, not a word, not a word, not a word, not a word. (Pause.) Not a word. (The Cripple of Inishmaan.) He's a genius!

I'm not convinced, @caiaphas, but at least I wasn't joining the rush to book and from the sound of it so far, the day-seaters may also have nothing to fear from me. I've never seen The Cripple Of Inishmaan, nor wanted to, and though I did see a revival of The Beauty Queen Of Lenane, it was more a case of admiring than liking or enjoying it, as it was just so horrible. MM's films however, dark as they also are, somehow sit better with me and I still regard In Bruges as his masterpiece. Maybe it was because there seemed to be a better mix of comedy and tragedy, or that the tragedy was so farcical that it took the edge off, whereas in his plays I haven't found it so.

Just got a £25 row A stalls seat - I guess a return as it was the only one.

Gunshots I'll deal with it given the playwright and cast...

...which pleases me, because I'm going straight from Euston to the Bridge, then (in theory) straight from the Bridge to the Young Vic for Twelfth Night before getting the late train home. If this is only 90 minutes, I might be able to do something that day besides watch plays and drink coffee.

Looking forward to this. Only 3 weeks from tomorrow until 23 nights in London. Actually 21 nights in London and 2 nights in Kent. Am beyond thrilled. My family wonders how I can be so organized for my trip but yet have a hard time navigating from one day to the next.

I'm seeing this on Saturday, which I didn't realise was only the 2nd night. I know the play, so it will be intriguing to see how it's staged, especially in the Bridge, as it's such a large space.

I'm sure it's changed a fair bit since I read it though, I doubt that the main parts have been altered much.

Um. Well. I think I feel the same way about this as I do about the later work of Terry Gilliam, if you see what I mean.... more when i’m back at my keyboard.

The early points on twitter are fairly mixed, but this comment is definitely intriguing. From the blurb on the website, if they've managed to get Gilliam's visual aesthetic and tone then it seems like it could be a great fit. Edit: just noticed that you used the word 'later'. Hmm, still enjoy his work, but he's definitely past his creative peak. Slightly more nervous now.

The sort of comments that are more likely to have me looking forward to it, to be honest.

Potentially offensive McDonagh is usually the best McDonagh.

Potentially offensive McDonagh I presume that's what he's aiming for (because I can't think of any other rationale for it) - unfortunately this more often comes across like an 80s Blackadder sketch/panto rather than The Producers. An Octoroon (crucially, a piece by a black writer), and even the Dickens episode of Quacks, did this sort of thing so much better.

Well - Family Smallperson had a really good time at this tonight! I have a long history of enjoying McDonagh's theatre writing; the children know him from film. We were all engaged from the moment that wonderful gravelly voice that could only be Tom Waits started to tell a story about a black pygmy from the Congo trapped in a mahogany box who was writing stories. Jim Broadbent gets better and better as HCA (including a well-documented stay (over-stay) with Charles Dickens in London) and then there was lots of McDonagh weirdness with red men, puppets, a haunted accordion and much much more! It had a lot of the dark feel that Hangmen created but this has a resonance of The Pillowman too. It isn't a tour de force in theatrical terms but it is a night to remember!

Well - yes! There is one scene towards the end with rifles, shotguns and prolonged fire from a hidden machine gun (not saying where it is hidden - hope that is unspoilery?). It is short but it is definitely loud!

Hi all!
Can anyone who has seen this yet advise on whether there are racially sensitive issues/themes that arise in this play? I'm seeing it tonight and the mention of The Octoroon a few comments above has panicked me slightly as that play was particularly harrowing and difficult to watch.
Thanks!

What'll you do if there are? You wouldn't give up your ticket, would you? Unless anyone here can answer your question, then go along expecting the worst. That way you'll be prepared. And if it isn't as bad as you feared, then perhaps you may even be pleasantly surprised.
