While I enjoyed Dunkirk (to say the least), I had a ticket to a preview of Baby Driver and returned it because I got the air of something that was too smug for its own good. Is it really that great?

Yes. It's put together almost as if it's a musical - the music and the action are so intertwined, with the action timed to the soundtrack and the music expressing character. But it's a big old action-heist movie, and goes balls-out on the car chases and the violence. Really vivid, pulpy supporting characters.
I guess how much people enjoy it depends on how much you like Edgar Wright films, in that his style is very distinctive - but this is different than his earlier films because there's no irony in the approach to it, no winking at the audience, it's a love-letter to American crime thrillers not a pastiche of them.
Worth watching twice because there's so much detail I didn't notice the first time around.

I caught Baby Driver for the first time this afternoon (was surprised to see cinema's still showing it almost 2 months after its release!) and couldn't agree more with what kathryn says above. I absolutely loved every moment, I was completely in awe at the work that must've been put into this to make this film work, and work so bloody well. I am a *huge* fan of Edgar Wright and I caught many directorial similarities between this and other films of his (such as Shaun of the Dead & Hot Fuzz in the Cornetto Trilogy) which I am fan of. Can't wait to get it on DVD and re-watch!!

Why do bodies always let one down at the most inconvenient moments? I was at least slightly cheered up earlier by watching the showjumping phase of the European Eventing Championships & seeing the British riders win team gold & individual bronze.

That was a nice weekend. Saw Nina Conti at the Fringe and nearly wet myself laughing. Finished the last unit for my OU module and I'm read to start exam revision. Apart from that, made the flat spotless in preparation for the Royal Visit (Dearest, Darlingest Momsie and Popsicle arriving from the land of Poles).

Lovely weekend here too. A final Funny Girl on Saturday and then Top Hat at Kilworth last night. What a fabulous production - I'd say "go" but it's sold out.
Healing vibes to the afflicted.

Waited in, yet again, for the electrician on Friday to come and finish various bits and pieces. 2 hours after the appointed hour I got a text "from A&E" (yeah, right) and haven't heard from him since. The deer are still coming in scaring the dog (I kid ye not!) and, despite arranging appointments, not one person has even bothered to turn up to quote for the fence all summer.
Saturday. Went to buy my Polish biccies in local Polish shop. There's a card by the till advertising ....well....everything. I take the card and make the call.....
Long story short, it's now Monday, 10.25 and the old fence is already down and waiting for the skip to arrive....oh but how I love the Poles!
They're also going to fix my towel rail (using the new part the other electrician left behind...) and sort out my sensor lights and get the really really old, rubbish piano into the skip. (I might shed a tear at that...lots of memories of scales, Chopsticks and Furry Leaves.....)
Now I must be off as I have a wordy review to compose on Checkatrade for the original electrician....👺

oh but how I love the Poles! Thank you, we love being loved. Especially the ones who are more skillful than I am (I'm just a keyboard monkey). But I'm more interested to find out what are your biccies of choice when it comes to Polish biccies?

But I'm more interested to find out what are your biccies of choice when it comes to Polish biccies? I wondered how long it would take you to pop up Michal! I am actually part Pole - hence why I go looking for Polish biscuits as they taste of my childhood. The ones I love best are the dark chocolate-covered gingerbread that come in little packs of 6 and are rectangular shaped with rounded corners and another rounded lump along the longer side of the rectangle. When I was little they came in brown noisy crinkly cellophane with a white band round the middle. Now they come in white and brown wrappers, but had sold out on Saturday so I don't have a packet to copy the name from. It begins with Z I think? (don't most things in Polish?!?) I also like the heart shaped gingerbread ones with a bit of red sauce hidden in the middle. Oh, and the chocolate cherries with cherry liqueur inside! And the chocolate plums...(This is the only time I eat chocolate as the insides are so good!) And Krackus gherkins. (Definitely not covered in chocolate!)

Tibidabo , not sure what the name of these sweets is, but you get 100 points for the thorough description! If I were to pick up my favourite polish sweets I think I would go for: Pryncypalki, Jezyki and Ptasie Mleczko... Mmmm....

michalnowicki they sell Jezyki in Tescos. I have found the ones I mean. They are called Katarzynki - I don't know how to do your linky thing. Pierniczki are the ones with the sauce inside. Thank you for my 100 points - I think you meant I ramble a bit!!

I know, bit useless sometimes! I cheered myself up by watching the athletics and then went on to ruin that by losing heavily at Scrabble! Hope you're feeling better! I feel your pain. I'm useless at Scrabble, mostly because I have no talent for anagrams. I think I've only won 1 game in my entire life & usually come last. Not feeling better yet. However in one way that is a good thing. If I'd cancelled going to Edinburgh & then felt fine a few hours later I'd've been even more hacked off than I already am. The fact that my throat & ears are still painful at least vindicates making the decision to stay at home. Lovely weekend here too. A final Funny Girl on Saturday and then Top Hat at Kilworth last night. What a fabulous production - I'd say "go" but it's sold out. Is the Kilworth production very similar to the previous one? The production pictures on BWW the other day showed extremely similar-looking costumes. (I can't go, not only due to the sold-out-ness but because the venue appears to be prettyy inaccessible unless you have a car, which I don't.)

No, you do not ramble (by the way, congrats for you 1000 posts!) you have given a perfect description of Katarzynki - I will read it later to my partner and we'll see if he gets it

On Westminster Embankment, the new New Scotland Yard... I can't decide if the 'new' Scotland Yard should actually be called the Old New Scotland Yard, or the New Old Scotland Yard?

(by the way, congrats for you 1000 posts!) Is that a thing? Well, thank you! I didn't even notice.....doesn't it just merely reinforce the 'ramble' tag? Anyway. Polish builders are going great guns - though they've upset the dog as they've set their gazebo up right over her powder room. I seriously do have the grumpiest dog in the world.😾

Saw the year's first display of Christmas chocolates. Shortly thereafter enjoyed some vodka. I can't imagine many people who buy Christmas chocolates in August would actually manage to hold off eating them until Christmas! My nearest NT property has had Christmas cards in their shop since June. I don't know how people can be so organised as to buy Christmas cards in June. I'm the sort of person who writes Christmas cards on 23rd December...then gets round to posting them on 27th...
