Agree with @xandrel , most of the bad behaviour I have witnessed has been from the parental generation with the only commonality a perceived element of ‘elitist’ entitlement by the perpetrator.

Ultimately, we could all sit here and blame the parents or whichever Minister for Education we dislike the most, but perhaps its our fault, as a society, for allowing this to happen in the first place. For sitting back and thinking there's a scapegoat somewhere to be had, it's their fault not ours. Given the age of some of the worst offenders of bad theatre behaviour, I blame Viscount Hailsham. How come? In all honesty, I don't know who he is. Is that his fault? My parents? My Schools?.. or mine..

He was education secretary in 1957 and again in 1964. All his fault. Clearly I should have clarified I meant the 2nd Viscount Hailsham, Quintin Hogg.

I’d agree with a number of points above. The generational element is definitely present and younger audiences are generally more flexible, able to respond to differing performance circumstances appropriately. Also displaying, on the whole, less of that stubborn sense of entitlement that has led to such a jaundiced view of the baby boomer generation.
On the parental/school question, although I agree with Serial Shusher’s view on schools becoming less open to education at the expense of whatever this year’s measure of success is, I think that argument also shows why they are not equal. Schools have had their freedom to do their job squashed, so that students are not at the centre of them, and sacrificed at the altar of measurability. Parents, however, have not got that excuse.

Tuesday night at Jamie. The woman next to me (who sat down twenty minutes late with a cocktail in hand) sneezed. She proceeded to open her hands to check the contents and show them to her companion before rubbing her hands together.
(Can I start a Bad Behaviour By Theatres thread or is there a similar existing one?)

At the Glee Club Birmingham on Saturday night one of the best announcements ever before the comedy show was about to start "Please make sure that your phones are turned to silent or switched off, if they go off loudly everyone will think you are a ****. Please don't talk as people have come to hear the acts and not listen to you"

Big problems at the Six sing-a-long. Attention seekers think they were at a concert were standing up all of the time meaning others couldn't not see.

^It’s all done in the best posssibble taste...the magic genius of Kenny Everett! Kenny's TV shows were ahead of their time, he was a total technology nerd and would have had a field day with what you can do today. Also I never heard him at his peak on radio, he was supposed to be one of the funniest ever at that too.

this is not bad behaviour, more an observation. certainly not a criticism. I was at The Lehman Trilogy at my local cinema last Thursday, and not unsurprisingly, being about a Jewish family, the local jewish community were out having a wonderful night. Everyone knew each other, and there was much waving and calling, and good natured gossip, and every time a significant date or action was mentioned there were many comments and tutting. And much applause after the big set scenes/speeches. I've seldom been in an audience that was so obviously having a good time, and so vocal. To acknowledge that I subsequently missed some finer points of dialogue would seem churlish, as the sense of a shared event in the audience was lovely. I got swept up with the sense of community. Normally, the same cinema is only half full and no-one looks at each other.

Big problems at the Six sing-a-long. Attention seekers think they were at a concert were standing up all of the time meaning others couldn't not see. If it's OK to block others' view by means of a 'standing ovation', presumably it's OK to do it the rest of the time. Both are examples of inconsiderate behaviour.

It's been a while since your last standing ovation post, I was getting worried!

American: Oh yeah I saw a thee-ay-ter show once when I was in London! Me: How lovely, do you remember what show? American: It was about a horse. Me: Equus?
Reader, it was not Equus.
(Not bad behaviour, I didn’t know where else to put it.)
