Orange paint thrown over a dinosaur skeleton at the Natural History Museum now. I don't see how criminal damage like that benefits their cause, it just makes me turn against them that little bit more.

Thankfully it was a replica skeleton rather than the original. But it is still a pointless bit of vandalism that should see the perpetrators inside.
A few nights in Belmarsh might give them the necessary short, sharp shock

It is almost like they thought this through carefully…… Save your prison cells for some of the people spending our taxes and allowing uncapped bonuses for bankers! I get it is annoying. I get it makes your blood boil. But they won’t listen to reasonable as they are in it for the money! And reasonable gets no coverage. Chat to some young people…..they understand why the protests have to happen! And be annoying…..!!!!

Also, fair play for pointing out it was a replica.

We aren't going to agree on this.
Just because some young people agree with JSO doesn't mean anything significant.
A very small number of people agree with using criminal damage as a legitimate form of process. It isn't. It is just criminal behaviour. And should be treated as such.
JSO are not achieving their aims. They are not changing minds. They are not winning arguments.
They have lost support of leading campaigners like Chris Packham.
It is time to retire their current tactics and focus their activities in other directions that don't alienate the public.

I fear that a JSO protestor is going to get hurt or killed if they're not careful.

How about if someone started throwing paint around your house shouting save the whales - they are protesting, I understand that so they shouldn't be punished?

Yeah, but please proportionate….get them to clean it up maybe? But jail them for days in a high security prison to “teach them a lesson” or run over them if they slow walk? Or just get out your car and attack them? It’s the rage and scale of what people are suggesting that seems to get all out of proportion. These people are not trying to harm you, they are trying to save the planet! By all means sentence them to a bit of litter picking if you must! Why do people hate them so much…and don’t say “hold up an ambulance” etc, because it’s more likely that the Conservative governement lack of investment will make your ambulance late to arrive!…it’s more “I want my day out at the theatre, or to not be slightly inconvenienced for one day” when people in low lying countries may lose their whole country…..catch yourself on.

Criminal damage is criminal damage regardless their "good" intentions. I believe in saving the planet, but I also believe that those that cause criminal damage regardless of their reasons should be punished.
I believe in getting homeless people off the street and into accommodation, so if I wear a t-shirt with a slogan end homelessness and spray paint an MP's car that's OK? or how about since I believe that all kids should get free school meals so how about I throw paint over monuments of cultural figures in London is that OK? The answer is no, criminal damage should be dealt with by prosecuting those offenders the law is black and white and there should be no grey areas just because they apparently want to stop climate change.
I dislike them because they are idiots targeting the wrong people, and they make me want to turn my heating up on full blast and waste fuel in protest of their idiotic protests and hope they are prosecuted to the full extent of the law

Making them clean up won't achieve anything
They need to be treated like the criminals they are.
There are ways to protest that don't involve criminality.
We should not tolerate this any longer.

I've got strong feelings on this and have to watch what I say but a short sharp stint inside might be what a few of these spoilt rich kids need. At least Swampy was all in for his cause and did it in a peaceful way. Plus if the same people are perpetuating these incidents like points on a driving licence they will build up and some of them will get locked up.
Or the government just bans the organisation they can soon do it when they want to. I know they aren't terrorists but they are a damn nuisance and other organisations have been banned when they haven't actually done anything. I think a recently banned organisation which has been in the news in the last few weeks has more supporters in this country than JCO to be honest.

All this warm weather, that’s the problem. What we need a re regular thunder storms and hail. Won’t see so many protests then. One of the ‘side issues’ of climate change is sociopolitical.

Judge Snow is now my favourite judge, the protestor should have thought about how their actions could impact their trip to India when they decided to protest.

Regardless of if you support them or not, it is quite funny that the protestor didn’t seem to take into account that they would be arrested for trespass or that their trial might get in the way of an international trip. Also the irony that they were arguing that people missing out on Les Mis wasn’t as important as the climate catastrophe, but expecting their trip to be taken into consideration

I guess only being up in front of the Magistrates Bench would not mean they were on full bail as if so then wouldn't passports have to be surrendered or they wouldn't be allowed to leave the country. I'll second the appreciation of Judge Snow.

Two JSO protestors smashed the protective glass on the Rokeby Venus at the National Gallery this morning and then gave (GCSE Drama-style) declarations (video is online) connecting their actions with the suffragettes.
I actively support green efforts but I think these actions are counter-productive.

This all has to stop.
These criminals need to be jailed for long enough to make it clear that criminal damage is not legitimate protest.
And those organising it need to serve time for conspiracy

And those organising it need to serve time for conspiracy It is a millenarian cult, they genuinely believe billions of people will die and the world will end if they don’t get their way. Given that, their actions are entirely legitimate from their perspective. They probably need treatment rather than jail, but jail will do for the moment. I see they have also turned up at the Cenotaph. Obviously concerned they’re been kept off the front pages by even higher status protests.

They better stay away on Sunday although a few of them could probably do with hearing about what a real fight for freedom was from a few of the WW2 veterans.

Refuted by the Met police who stated they were NOT protesting at the Cenotaph, but had been moved there by police themselves to be safe and be arrested. Be very careful what you believe these days.

Personally I’d rather they kept the jail space for the rapists and people causing more harm, rather than Just Stop Oil protestors, who at least have good motivation, even if you don’t agree with their methods…..can’t help thinking jailing some of our politicians would also be better use of the space! “Which ones?” I hear you cry….there’s a few to choose from, I’ll allow you that.

The suffragettes were fighting for a cause similar to none whites in Apartheid era South Africa.

The law should always be black and white, if someone commits criminal damage then they should be prosecuted following the letter of the law, and if that means jail time, then so be it. 'Good motivation' shouldn't come into it, and there is no way to measure 'more harm', what you consider as levels of harm can be very different to someone else's.

I stand by my statements. Probably one of the reasons we have cut emissions is that we have outsourced most of our production of “things” to China! Read what I said. Our emissions have fallen substantially on a consumption basis which includes exactly that outsourcing. On this basis emissions are down 21% since 1996. The data is readily available, you have no need to speculate. UK leads the developed world on that basis too. You can see the data here: ourworldindata.org/co2/country/united-kingdom?country=~GBR

I do wonder whether these demonstrations really help. But, on the other hand, I do question the concept of criminality, and I don’t think that unlawful acts are necessarily wrong. In Nazi Germany, helping Jews was considered criminal. Seeking abortion in many places in America is criminal, as was homosexuality in the UK until very recently. Was Javert wrong for stealing a loaf of bread? At the end of the day, we should be guided by moral principles, rather than by laws. Laws are created by fallible humans, many of whom with shady interests. Think of all the lawmakers who pander to far-right people for money and power. Also consider the many things that are not illegal but cause much harm to people. The fact is that much good has come to humanity by breaking laws. Important revolutions and changes started that way. I’m not saying that we should all break them or that the ends justify the means. What I’m saying is that laws are not absolutes, and that things should be considered within context. I think it is valid to oppose the JSO for their tactics, believing that they generate more harm than good, especially to the important cause they try to defend, but I don’t think it is right and fair to crush them for what is essentially some very minor infringements of current legislation.
