It’s an interesting question.
I read Zawe Ashton’s book recently and there’s a chapter where she describes shooting a traumatic/violent scene with a baby, that the kids were getting really upset, and how conflicted she felt knowing the only way to get the director to wrap the scene was by doing something in her own performance that would upset the kids even more.

Oh God I'm so, so sorry. It was foal behaviour on my part. I appreciate the unbridled enthusiasm, but I really think we should rein it in now, because watching everyone jockeying to make the lamest horse puns is honestly turning this thread into a complete mare.

The Donmar haven’t done anything, like many theatres they have information available about sensitive content (eg portrayals of rape) so people with PTSD or similar can avoid something that might cause them to have a panic attack. You have to actively search for it on the Donmar site, you can’t stumble onto it by accident. The press are getting their knickers in a twist over something that isn’t new and is standard practice.
Do you really think a rape survivor is being a “snowflake” by not wanting to witness a rape scene?? Imo the snowflakes are the ones throwing their toys out the pram over something that doesn’t affect then and which they’ll never see unless they go looking for it.

You don't get a credit for creating dialogue, unless contractually agreed ahead of time. It's not uncommon for actors to come up with lines of dialogue in rehearsals and they'd never receive a credit for it.
The threat of a lawsuit can absolutely scupper a production. I worked on a WIP at a major new writing theatre and a whole element had to be ditched because one audience member threatened to sue, even though the production was covered by disclaimers and would certainly have won in court. Legal action is so expensive it doesn't matter who's right or wrong.
I supported the women and I still do, but this new twist is worth looking at.

Tbh I have seen a great deal of people being affronted by people having a problem with a black woman being cast but very few people actually bothered by it. I had a look at that NotMyAriel hashtag and every single comment was people angry about it, no one actually saying it. Seems like people looking for a fight where there isn't really one. There are plenty of racist comments on Twitter saying this is outrageous and that Ariel is clearly white. Maybe the anti-racists outnumber them, which is great. But they are definitely there.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a theatre commission where the contract was signed before starting work.
My last play was published and on bookshelves before the contract was signed.
Shocking how much laxity is the norm.

I think it’s main problem was that it was too ambitious- trying to fit 20 years of a fair sized families lives into less than 2 hours, we got a few minor comments on Blair and Brown, and a couple of mentions of Greenham but that was pretty much it, with no mention of Corbyn, and characters just disappeared (I don’t want to spoil it for anyone yet to see it but the events in the final act aren’t satisfactorily explained) I got the impression that Jack Thorne went to the Royal Court, told them he was going to write a play about 20 years in the life of a left leaning middle class family and they just said ‘great’ and wrote him a blank cheque without asking him to go into further details. That’s basically how the Court works if you’re high profile enough. They believe in “trusting writers” which is... lovely but at least in some cases equates to “no notes, whatever draft you give us is what’ll get put on stage.”

I have no idea what to think of this particular case. But I do know that the Young Vic is consistently the flagship London theatre of its scale that is grounded in the London I live in. It goes above and beyond with the local community and young people that other non profits in the area could learn from. Thats not a space I plan on withdrawing support from anytime soon. The Suppliant Woman was a particularly good example of that. But of course, that was the previous administration. And it's still important, no matter what noble enterprises the new Young Vic leaders may be involved in, that they proceed with integrity, That depends on how you look at it. More than one of Kwame's YV productions, including Suppliant Women, were accused of exploitation because the community participants were expected to work for free for months (often having to cover their own travel expenses) and were not thanked or acknowledged. exeuntmagazine.com/features/community-choruses-exploitative/

Horrendous, and not the first time I've heard rumours about Kwame stealing other artists' work with proper attribution. (Though Victoria Sadler has been accused of abuse by multiple women so she's the last person who should be throwing stones.)

For what it's worth a friend of mine is working on this and says it's a complete ****show and is being constantly re-written during previews.
Full disclosure lest I be accused of having an agenda: I'm not going to see this. I don't want to see this. I've been biased against this since I first heard about it. I hate David Mamet.
Still press night tonight. We'll see what the critics make of it.

Midsummer Night's Dream. Oliver Chris' arse came out and so did a dozen camera phones. The Bridge made a real error in allowing photos during some of the dancing and acrobatic bits, it only encourages bad behaviour. If the ushers weren't so busy escorting latecomers and people going to and from the loo every 30 seconds they'd have been able to monitor phone use!

Having seen the Bridge's Midsummer Night's Dream this evening I will no longer be giving standing ovations.
Instead I will be throwing giant silver beach balls at the cast whilst dancing furiously.
It's theatre, I don't make the rules.

Hmm, never experienced that at either the Globe or the Old Vic.
I still think it’s jobsworthness when it’s someone you spoke to two minutes earlier and know full well has a ticket.

I’ve never ever been asked to show my ticket at any theatre after the interval, and it’s ridiculous to deny someone entry when you’ve already checked their ticket once. Pure jobsworthism and part of why the Globe ushers are so notoriously terrible.

There's an app called Too Good To Go which allows you to buy leftover food from restaurants and shops very cheap, that would otherwise be binned.
Back on topic: someone I know had a fight with the Globe ushers because she went to the loo in the interval, and the same usher who'd seen her leave the auditorium and in fact had told her where the loos were turned around 3 minutes later and refused to let her back in without her ticket. Unfortunately for them she's married to someone on the Globe board. Oops!

Starry Messenger press was the most celeb-stuffed theatre night I’ve ever been to, and the only celebs I saw were Biggins and the really camp one off Bake Off Extra Slice.
Phoebe WB got the biggest response!
