Every Christmas my dad recounts a proverb his uncle got in a cracker, that no one understood to this day. Maybe someone here has heard of it? "It's an ill will that blows from the soap factory." In the olden days ( before my time stop sniggering ) they used to make soap from animal fats so there would be a bit of a whiff, no? That might explain it but as a proverb it doesn’t explain it. The proverb is “it’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good’ so this is a version..

Enjoyed the first two episodes of Around the World in Eighty Days. Some psychological stuff ( three travellers , all with ‘baggage’ ) which I didn't expect having been brought up on the David Niven version. Tennant doing what Tennant does best. And some dramatic moments. Nothing you can’t watch with grandma or the kids.

Agreed. If you haven't seen it, do. It will make you smile. I’m not a fan of Dame Judi but I must say her performance in this is terrific - watch how every time they tell her something surprising she pauses for a beat or even longer, totally silent, no change in expression, you’ve no idea what her reaction will be, you wait in anticipation, then she jumps back to life. It’s very skilful and calculated. It’s the best performance I’ve seen on the show since the absolutely peerless Brian Blessed episode. Of course she can’t see anything as is obvious so perhaps listening means a bit more concentration and they might have asked her to pause for editing purposes…and yes, what a performance 😁

I’m amazed that the NT will schedule a run without seeing the script. Yes, Tom Stoppard maybe but other stuff? Well, explains a lot.
But I must take issue with another poster and the idea that white middle class people like to see plays about themselves. Eh? It just isn’t true. As for Hansard, yes it was a relationship but come one, he was an MP and they had lost a child. Much more than a relationship and anyway, what’s wrong with a relationship?
I think we need to have the talk………what do we mean by The National Theatre and what do we want it to put on? The canon including lesser known from the past, twentieth century, new writers, new plays from current writers, American plays, plays translated from other languages, experimental pieces, the list goes on but the only thing I am concerned with is quality. It has to be good. So someone has to tell Tom when his work isn’t and also champion the new person on the block when necessary. An inspired team of literary giants? No, just a thoroughly committed and knowledgeable team of people who know their stuff.

I thought it was a great show, very weepy, the tissues in my house almost gone. But as I said last year, getting it together with all the difficulties of the pandemic is a marvellous achievement. A live show for goodness sake and entertainment for all ages. They should get some kind of tv award. Rose the obvious winner, though I agree not a lot of steps in her show dance. It was just her whole shebang just pipped John’s shebang. Gonna be interesting how they do it next year.

I’ve not really seen either approach fail or feel intrusive on the text, but I’m sure that can happen. One example is Troilus and Cressida where one of the key themes is the toxic masculinity of the Greek camp - if you cast Agamemnon as a woman (as Greg Doran did) it undercuts this. There appears to be these days a lack of understanding of when our old Will is actually addressing quite a relevant point and imposing one of our own. For example, casting the illegitimate guy in King John as a woman takes away from the fact that he is actually a much better prospect as king within the contemporary situation. But he is illegitimate. A woman wouldn’t cut it anyway then. So WS talking about what kingship is and we choose to ignore it. I’m looking at RSC prod some time ago but they and others tend to do this kind of thing. It annoys the hell out of me.

Happy Christmas to Everyone. On the Board here we have shown that we can keep ourselves going with anecdotes and spats 🤪 so let’s keep going, enjoy what we know is sensible to enjoy and look forward to better times.
By the way, I do check in quite often over the hols so if anyone is having a miserable time, just look on here and connect. Always good for a gossip and chat about anything.

And today I have the side effects. My shoulder was so painful I couldn't sleep at all last night and now I'm sitting here shivering with the central heating turned up to 18°. I'm usually an early riser so when I was finally able to drag myself out of bed at 11:30 I knew it was less than ideal.
Weird how the effects vary. The first shot and the booster flattened me; the second shot and the flu one were no bother at all.
Hope you perk up soon and effects are short lived and you are fully protected. O dear and how odd. I just had a sore arm for a bit after the flu jab, nothing post covid. I’m lucky I suppose. So far……..Hope you can swing the cat round with bravado very soon.

My friend was at The Book of Mormon last night and there was a group of drunk people in the stalls. FOH staff had to get involved and apparently there was a shout and a physical fight broke out. They had to stop the show while the security wranged people out kicking and screaming! And the theatre owners wonder why we are keeping away……

I cycled from Baker Street end at Selfridges, all the way down Oxford Street down to Holborn and onto Cannon Street. So I thought I have a count up of these gaudy ‘American Candy Stores’ and I counted 8, I also know there is one near the Phoenix Theatre. It is hard to fathom out how these shops can afford to operate and a multi-billion pound coffee chains can’t, unless as point out earlier they’re used for laundering purposes. They have to pay a rent so I suppose they do, but would be nice to think the council keep an eye on this as it is def affecting the area and not for good. Who owns the Oxford St block? Is it the Duke of Westminster? I have no idea.

Shame they don't bring Rhys back. Would make a better show. If he could do two numbers he hasn’t forgotten, the argentine and the samba and then concentrate on a show dance as from last night to sat pm it would work.
Incidentally, most random celeb check, I saw AJ in her green fluffy coat and with lower leg bandaged and on crutches outside my nail salon in Finchley ( Tally Ho if anyone knows the area)

Don’t understand the question. If you are in London, it won’t close down but some theatres might if numbers are very low. I’ve read that NY is very mask compliant and you show pass to get into venues and it feels v safe. But you have to go thru airport and sit on a place for 7 hours to get there. So if you are in London, I would stay here but f you are NY stay there and try a few different shows.

It is a very complicated system to reform. I always think that suspending the uni fees for nursing and Medicine would encourage people to enrol and train. If we want all nurses to be uni educated then they have to loosen the reins a bit. ( personally I would favour being able to move up the profession within a non uni training ) They could do it on condition that graduates worked only in NHS or say 5 years. Or something along those lines. They made it very hard for applicants to Medicine to actually train, needing highest A level qualifications and so on, quite a few years a go. We saw it coming at the time but who had the influence to do anything about it? Now with this and the uni fees, no wonder we ask for doctors and nurses from abroad. I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but if we apply what we know to the future now we could alleviate problems down the line.

So annoying. Can you stroll over to another county? 😁 Look up walk ins next door as it were. I did look at the town that's nearest to us over the boarder in Essex but that doesn't seem to have any walk-in centre & appointments weren't any sooner than the one I already have booked. The nearest walk-in centres I can find are 25+ miles away, which is too far away as I don't own a car & my mother's not prepared to drive long distances. That is most annoying.

Oh that's a shame, if you have some time Monday and your local centre is easy to get to, might be worth popping down to see if you can get booster. Can only say no and you still have your original date It's not that easy to get to, its on the other side of Cambridge & the round trip takes about an hour, but its not as if I have anything in particular to do on Monday so I may as well probably waste over an hour! Yep it works - lots of local pharmacy availability, I'm now getting mine on Tuesday! I've just had another look but its still the same vaccination centres with no new availability showing up for me. It seems that, as it was nearly a year ago when the vaccines were first being rolled out, availability varies like made depending on location. Worth a try if you do have the time. They are saying the booster will help agin the omidoodha

The samba was a bit messy in places The rumba was very stop-start and lacking in flow. Massively over marked. 35 tops I didn't like the Jive. The music felt entirely wrong for it Loved the music for the AT. But it was lacking a bit in terms of footwork for me. What they did, they did well. But I want more of the dance. I did like the jive but it didn't have enough of a change of key in the middle that ramps it up. But it was a good show and set up for the final. Mind you I couldn’t see much thru the tears 😂
